and hopefully trigger clinicians to think of it as a differential diagnosis earlier leading to better outcomes.
Hahahahaha this is actually real.
@KeeleUniversity
shameful letting the standards drop so low.
skip to 30 seconds to see how to palpate bilateral carpal tunnel pulses 😂😂😂
Not fooling anyone. Seriously!? Generalist practitioners, quack quack 🦆🦆
But
@VictoriaAtkins
why are they paid more?
And why are physician assistants/associates paid the same as an interventional radiology ST5 with >7 years more experience and a medical degree?
'They are there to work alongside doctors not instead of doctors.'
Health Secretary Victoria Atkins reiterates 'regulations' on physician associates after the death of 30-year-old Emily Chesterton.
🚨‼️ Reports from 2 separate IR departments with Physician assistant/associates
1. Illegal use of radiation by PA (e.g. pushing pedals whilst doing a nephrostomy.)
2. Taking opportunities from radiology doctors.

Scope must be set.
This is so incredibly out of touch
@RCRadiologists
You have a glut of potential radiologists taking enforced years out of training because you aren't creating anywhere near enough new training jobs!
I applied to IMT this year, the competition ratio has gone up by 43% in one year. If I see one more person say “there’s enough work to go around”, I may fully lose it.
We’re fighting each other like dogs for these posts, when there are gaps on every rota around the country

The PA IR job in NW London pays £53k (£13k more than ST1)!
No MSRA exam (an exam with zero radiology content) to access highly competitive (≈9:1 competition ratio) radiology training.
No 3 years of core radiology and 3 mega self-funded exams pre-IR.
We spoke, they listened!
@RCRadiologists
have made a significant reduction to the weighting of multi-specialty recruitment assessment (MSRA) this year and increased the weighting of portfolio and interview.
The interview format has also changed. Great summary from
@IR_juniors
There are >3000 applicants for ~350 radiology training posts this year.
Currently shortlisting based on MSRA only (🤢). Approx 700 shortlisted.
Final rank is based on 40% MSRA, 30% portfolio and 30% interview.
We can do better.
How should we recruit radiologists?!
Watching this 6 minute video could save your life or the life of your loved one.
Your government is paying people (PAs) with 2 years relevant training in healthcare starting salaries of £55k while doctors with 6 years start on £28k.
#Askforadoctor
Wow. 87% of doctors are worried about patient safety due to how the NHS is using the PA role
The NHS apparently encourages whistleblowers but it’s been trying to shut down doctors raising these concerns.
@ClinOncDoc
Same pay would not be fair - why should a phycisian (Dr) be paid the same as an assistant/associate (not a Dr)?
The Dr (generally) has higher/more:
GCSE/A levels
Uni yrs-> knowledge
Student loan debt
Working hrs 48 vs 40
Rota demands
Liability
Professional/exam/relocation £
Currently takes a minimum of 13 years to train an interventional radiologist (more often 14-20 yrs)
What changes could be made to the current training pathway to produce more IRs?
Should image-guided surgery (IR) be a standalone specialty?

Could the trusts hiring PAs in IR instead consider creating foundation doctor rotations in IR?
Or year(s)-long clinical fellow posts to negate the argument of docs rotating too often?
Or integrate IR into ST1-3 job plans to cover these supposed staff gaps.

Zoom out. You're a very important, yet tiny cog in a very large system. Think of the other excellent doctors, nurses, HCAs, cleaners, AHPs currently working looking after these patients and try to have faith in their abilities to care for patients. They are more experienced too.
Clarification - 2,718 jobless doctors who applied to clinical radiology specialty training.
They are not lacking in quantity or quality.

@DHidlayVIR
@VictoriaAtkins
The standard rota for an IR registrar is 48 hrs/week incl. unsociable hrs and 37.5-40 hrs for a physician assistant/associate. This makes the hourly rate of an interventional radiology physician associate aged >23 more than an interventional radiology registrar doctor aged >30

Have you yourself worked with or supervised (been a liability sponge for) a physician’s assistant?

please do something to stop this GMC legislation 🙏
There is such clear evidence like Emily Chesterton that physician associate/assistant expansion is dangerous for patients.
🚨 Urgent: Legislation to regulate Physician Associates (PAs) and Anaesthesia Associates (AAs) under GMC is set to pass this Wednesday via affirmative statutory instruments, bypassing vital scrutiny in parliament.
