It has been brought to my attention that, in a totally typical thing of me, I didn't even mentioned that this was an episode of the Acoustical Society of America's podcast, and that I was invited to it to chat about my research. 😃
For one of my studies, I did interviews to autistic people on the impact of daily life acoustic environments. Many of them had been teachers, and we wrote a paper about their (quite bad) experiences in schools.
Here's me talking (a lot...) about the topic
@Beatriz_efe
@lslothuus
The white man entitlement to think it's okay to go and take the microphone instead of just leaving if you don't like it.
Also, as someone shouts, climate is politics. Greta is very vocal also with Sweden stealing land from Sámi people for mines.

Hi, indeed. From studies in Wuhan that were ignored as for other aspects to the last one in Nature. Pediatricians in Spain are checking and in fact finding lymphopenias, neutropenias and Cd4-8 deficiency. Not checking this is stubborn negligence. :(
@1goodtern
Has this person considered at all that, as the same way she doesn't want to get a chill from a draft, another person may not want to catch a bug? We're really suppressing the freedom to be healthy with the "immunity debt" rhetoric, aren't we?

Exactly this. I was writing what he should try and start with non-autistics first if he's curious about categorising human beings in delimited and exclusive boxes.
Like if autistic people didn't have a lifetime of trauma due to being excluded, judged, feeling not belonging...
@michelledonelan
Student here. We've been paying the price of the active deterioration of working conditions in HE. Strikes are a forced response to that. They're caring about us more than their bosses or the ministry.
We're also paying high gatekeeping fees that your generation didn't have.
@giulio_mattioli
I was doing zapping earlier and saw they were talking about Paola Cortellesi's last movie (with domestic abuse). Three old guys in a far-right channel in Spain, saying that cinematographically it's okay, but "the tone is too much, too aggressive" and they "couldn't empathize". 🙃
@felisroboticus

I've wondered many times if this is part of the reason we tend to have a strong sense of justice, because we manage to see so many double standards since so early. In any case, it's really triggering, apart from frustrating.
@aerielist
I've been trying to read survivors testimonials, but nothing. And if they found proofs of assaults, then they have the proofs and could and should present them? They keep saying "why you don't believe women" but women aren't allowed to speak!

Is anyone keeping track of "absenteeism" from teachers? Isn't it disruptive for education to have teachers constantly missing for days/weeks?
What would it take to start cleaning the air in schools as it's done in modern corporate buildings? All too absurd and unnecessary.

And it's not "a natural thing" in other parts of the world where science/academia are not so historically related to power and prestige, and essentially banned for women. This is one of the things they always forget to mention when talking about "natural" preferences or skills.

It's depressing. The terminology in the UK has been deliberately negative towards interventions. It'd be more accurate to call them protection measures, not restrictions. Good masks and ventilation are effective ones and don't reduce freedom, they give it. Hubris kills.

Another one with surprises: adjusted for trade to consider which countries offshore their emissions more.
Not very fair to blame China for producing goods consumed by wealthy people, is it.
"The study participants found that once they knew they were autistic they found it easier to support their own health and wellbeing. Until that time, they hadn’t understood their needs in an autistic context."
"In 2019 I carried out a study to explore how late-diagnosed autistic women (like me) managed their health and wellbeing. This is the first of four blog posts describing the themes I identified when analysing the interviews."
A friend was told by a psychologist that her autistic son "was not able to feel love" for her or anyone.
This is so heartbreaking, and the result of SBC's toxic and flat wrong narrative being the only one studied in colleges for decades. This must stop.
#BoycottSpectrum10K
The fact that Simon Baron-Cohen is one of the leading individuals in forming this subculture, with their own social constructs, etc, is *dangerous*, given his toxicity, his sexism, and his demonstrable desire to "cure" autism, selective of intelligence.

Hi. How this advert would do that, really. It's just saying "they just die", instead of they are human beings who fully deserve being treated with dignity, respect and love every day of their lives no matter who they are. I'm sure you see the problem.

That would imply an unexpected call and a change of plans. 😬
Really, in unis and companies they have workshops telling us about how much Swedish culture avoids conflict and changes, which obviously leads to a lot of issues, ie when you have to act fast in a war or a pandemic.

Not welcomed for being asked why the non-autistic group is called healthy? Who can think there's no duty to see and respect the people they are studying? Or can trivialise it as "saying the wrong word is the end of the world"? Who are really the ones not welcomed and dismissed?

Ah bc when you're not a white guy no one, including your equals, will presume competence, so you need to prove constantly that you deserve to be where you are. It's a nice trick "good" storytellers have instilled for centuries and apparently changing this is doing it "wrong".

I guess we should appreciate the warnings right at the job ads about the profiles they want to make "feel at home".

When everyone around seems to just get basic life things right and you don't, yes, you think it has to be you. Then you get some answers, but since the discrimination continues it's not easy to stop feeling a failure. This is why we need not only support, but society to change.
@anaruize
@drchrisjbailey
I'm reading the mind of the authors and guessing that most of that book is about making assumptions very confidently and, most of the times, wrong. Because that's just what non-autistic people do all the time seeing no problem at all with it.

My ex-employer in Sweden gave all that to everyone. Like if some people in some places know that employees having good things that make their lives easier are happier and work better.
@NCSAutismOrg
The push mentioned is actually to be more accurate. All this is an antagonistic disinformation campaign by a group of people that won't listen.
'Profound'/'not profund' is as accurate to represent anyone's reality as 'orange' or 'squared' autism.
@elmundoes
Libertad, no? 🙃
@laurenancona
We really need to be aware of all the biases in society towards everyone to reduce the diagnosis gaps. Masking or not, women are much less believed by doctors of any gender. Even less if we're not white and cis.
As children we're not assessed, and as adults we're dismissed.
@shoshanahjacobs
I've been wondering all this time if this kind of astonishing risk assessment (good masks protect lives but what about our freedom/intelligibility/smiles) are mostly done by those who have been privileged for most of their lives and haven't seen that sh*t happens, often big time.
@Spectrum
All those cherry-picked comments in otherwise respectful threads about research that could and should be better.
But nothing about the tons of studies celebrated by the community, many done by brilliant non-autistic people who care and somehow are able to respect everyone?

This is maybe quite an appropriate moment to remind that if her husband hadn't threatened with not accepting the prize if she was not included in it, they wouldn't have given Marie Curie her first prize.
I really hope that guy know this.

Omg who dares to say autistic people lack resilience. I do not accept any of that any more after seeing millions not caring about anyone else and refusing putting a piece of cloth on their face or living for a while without going to restaurants or clubbing bc it's stressful.
🔊The survey for my next study is ready!
We want to know more about sound perception and impact of acoustic environments in people who consider themselves sensitive to noise/sound.
For people anywhere, although the survey is in English and Spanish.

Yes, although these others can be at home too. It's not rare that parents try to 'prepare us for the real world' from early age, so we're not 'too sensitive', 'too know-it-all', 'too happy', 'too serious', etc.
The lesson basically is 'don't be you when you are with others'. 😞
"I feel like the deaf community taught me the meaning of the word communication. I feel like the deaf community taught me what listening really is. Listening isn't something you just do with your ears. It's something you do by holding space for someone else with your attention."

Yes, and research on noise annoyance has often dismissed this sensitivity as 'histrionic' and not relevant. :(
There's also tinnitus and aural hallucinations, which are more common than we think bc brains tricks us all the time (like hearing your phone ring/notification).

@FranSevillaRne

This is the data from Haaretz. And btw, there is also confirmation that Israel army killed many hundreds of those destroying and burning the houses. This must be denounced too. They were civilians in a conflict but they don't care about any on any side.
@ItsEmilyKaty
Researchers don't talk much to any members of a group they're "studying" primarily bc the methods for that aren't considered scientific enough in academia and don't get the same recognition. They've been designed by imperial white men to obtain status, and we're still there. :/

A note about this index tho: many of those pink areas feed the rest of Europe and have big protected natural parks in them.

I've been tagged here a lot. Basically: ORF6 is one of the proteins that the COVID virus makes, it plays a role in blocking our cellular response to recognize and fight the virus by effing with our interferons and other things we use to fight. I'll explain the broader concept:

The Israeli government doesn't authorize Brazilians or Irish citizens to leave Gaza because their governments ask for a ceasefire.
It's a government with the morals of a spoilt and violent teenager.
So bc Brazil first proposed a ceasefire— the most subdued declaration to prevent loss of human life— Israel responds by holding 34+ Brazilian families hostage in Gaza, the place they’re currently bombing relentlessly. Yet we are supposed to believe HAMAS is the terrorist org..?

This story represents really well how autistic men feel more entitled and are allowed by social expectations and gender roles to just spend time in special interests without being disturbed, as someone highlighted in a talk. And the different in treatment starts in childhood.

Sometimes they add more sugar for conservation so just careful with that. :)
I eat so much more fruit when I can do a shake, especially with some yogurt, and the plus is that you can add a bit of cocoa or carob flour with the banana and pear and it's 👌 or smooth oats too.

But does autism really mean any of those other things? Why not working on being scientifically specific so everyone, espec more vulnerable, gets research and support needed instead of ideating qualifying adjectives for autism itself that can end in broad, stigmatising hierarchy?

A leaked video from 2001 shows Israeli PM Netanyahu talking about how Israel intentionally strikes Palestinians “painfully”, how he deceived the US to break the Oslo Accords, and how Americans will always support Israel if it faces backlash
