My best advice for the braves wanna-become-a-PI out there?
After science, learn how to write. Or you’ll remain a great scientist, who is the only one aware of the beauty of your own science.
So, read & write.
Read & write.
And then, read & write again.
News from the lab, and more:
A molecule from our lab… designed on a computer, will now enter into the clinic… super proud! this is exciting and promising, hoping one day to help patients and their families.
Congrats to the team !!!

@marco_borgogno
@AnnalisaSavardi
I am truly fond of computer-aided drug design! It is the most effective way to design drugs!
But, just do not forget that compounds need to be synthesized and tested to become drugs.
Comp & AI impact drug discovery only if integrated with experiments.
#drugdiscovery
Research institutes should be open 24/7.
There should always be the opportunity to go to the lab/office and do what we care about in that given moment, which is also accidentally called work, at times.
Ideas, creativity and perseverance should not be limited or restrained.
COMPUTATIONAL POSTDOCS IN MY LAB at IIT
@IITalk
- 2 OPENINGS.
MD simulations, nucleic acids, drug design, ML - in collab with experimentalists.
Please reach out for more info.
DM to me, or send me an email with CV and a cover letter! - thanks !!!
Links available soon.
To young researchers: just ignore invitations to act (for free) as a guest editor for special issues in questionable journals. It won’t help in your cv, at all, while it will cost you time and energy. Stay focused on your work, which will take you to respected journals.
👍
As a senior postdoc, you should be able to pick and run a project, and write a paper in final form, ready for submission - if your dream is to fly solo as a (successful) PI.
FYI, self-evaluate your status.
Cruel but true.
No pressure, enjoy your Sunday 😉
I often read claims like “revolutionize drug discovery”.
To revolutionize drug discovery, one needs to - at least - discover a drug.
FYI. Just saying. 😉

Enzymes just amaze me - I can read of everything, but when I read a good paper on enzymes, every time I am totally fasceinated by these wonderfully engineered and evolved little perfect machines...
#Enzymes
rock.
Papers based on virtual screening presenting compounds that are not experimentally tested, have no place in serious scientific journals. Period.
Avoid those journals.
My humble and firm opinion.
Honored proud & happy to have been elected Vice President (President, 2026) of the International Society of Quantum Biology and Pharmacology (ISQBP). I’ll do my best to honor a vivid community of computational scientists at the interface of comp and pharma!

2 POSTDOC POSITIONS IN MED CHEM in my group
@IITalk

READ MORE AND APPLY, HERE:
Deadline: January 15.
Please RT.
To young researchers:
With papers, I often start from writing a draft of the abstract. It will change many times, later on - but initially it helps me define the logic flow, keywords, & the overall take home message of the story.
Capture the relevance of your work!
My tip 😊
Going through proposals, I noticed that several PIs publish in MDPI journals, as some offer a (somehow…) decent IF.
Just please go to more serious and respected journals; MDPI won’t do any good to your reputation, nor to your CV.
My two cents …
To me, Twitter is of major help in spotting new scientific findings.
But, Twitter is us!
Colleagues posting new papers is great! And, reactions help measure the expected impact!
Way more efficient than digging into ‘alerts’ from journals.
Let’s keep posting great
#science
!
Comp chem is great.
Med Chem is great.
But big advantages in making drugs come from their true, effective combination!
Rational, physics-based drug design - when comp&med chem work together. 💪
That’s how things should be done.
(.. and this is what we do, in the lab 😉)
Honored, happy and grateful to have received the ESMEC award, 20 years after I attended to this wonderful prestigious school as a student. 🥂
Many young students here - hope to have motivated further their will to impact on the future of our field !
Drug discovery rocks. 💪☺️
Each new paper is not about having one more paper published in a good journal, for our CV.
Each new paper is education of young researchers, is Discovery, & ultimately is impact on Science & Society. Or what is it, otherwise?
That’s what each new paper means, hopefully.
😉🫣

When you write a paper or draft a figure, you have to aim at perfection.
Symmetry. Proportions. Consistency.
Clarity mixed with logic and beauty.
Nothing less than perfection.
Perfection.
Aim at PERFECTION.
Lately, most students prefer ‘secure’ jobs in biotech, rather than academia.
Initially, I was somehow sorry for it.
But, I rarely see successful PIs with a decent life balance…men&women.
So, who knows what’s the right path after all. 🤔
Just go with the flow & gut feelings!
When you are postdoc often you have no idea of what the future will bring professionally, while feeling anxious about it. Will I be okay?
Looking back, I see how things have evolved on their own. Just work hard and accept events with a bit of fatalism & optimism. You’ll be okay!

Most (all) drugs engage multiple targets. Multiple pockets.
Just accept it.
Then, we hope there is a primary target, the most responsible one of its action. Or maybe it’s coincidental.

Design, synthesize, test and finally bring your lead compound into a (pre)clinical study.
Then, sell me your revolutionary new method, please.
Scientific collaborations can only be rewarding and truly successful if based on mutual esteem and respect (as any relationship in life).
True collab share pain & gain, i.e. mostly pain.
Our time&energy is limited.
Chose with care your collaborators.
