@realEstateTrent There were lots of paper records and consequently lots of literal paperwork. They did the same jobs but with lots more paper and slower communication. An email would be a letter. A PDF would be a printed document. A database would be a filing cabinet.

#monero is hard forking tomorrow, and it includes a PoW change meant to invalidate ASICs which may or may not exist. It'll also invalidate botnets that cannot update infected machines. Difficulty will readjust within 24h. Results will be very interesting.

ICOs actually have a very important function that will one day be indispensable. They allow for democratic fundraising without VCs getting a large cut. Also programmability of tokens and probably other stuff. But today they're the tools of scammers and abused heavily. :/

Psychology is a field at risk of dying imo. Neuroscience, psychiatry, and behavioral genetics have a real shot at explaining the things psychology was supposed to in the next 20 yrs. If that happens then psychology may go the way of alchemy (replaced by chemistry).

It's difficult to see the #ethereum block reward reduction of 33% as something other than stakeholders trying to push up the price. It's also hard to see how a group of about a dozen people ppl voting on the change itself as binding is not a central bank.

In #Monero the original founders (then #Bytecoin ) were anonymous, and after forking, the majority of the Monero core devs have been anonymous. Their value proposition is privacy, and it is mandatory. That's pretty much as cypherpunk as you can get.

Base layer *must* remain immutable. If this does not happen, it opens up security holes for the courts and legal system to creep through. It starts with "lost" coins. Then includes "stolen" coins. The devs are now performing the function of lawyers.

#Bitcoin isn't just mathematically secure, it's thermodynamically secure. Bitcoin's cryptography is based off of computational hardness assumptions and the complexity of brute force attacks. We can compute the minimum energy / time needed to attack Bitcoin. 1/

The worst kinds of personalities in crypto imo are the guys who bought in super early in something like ETH or BTC, made a ton of money, and for that one reason think they are some crypto savant. They start hedge funds touting their wisdom. Many are complete idiots, to be frank.

#Ethereum is an incredible case study in product market fit. The protocol is 3 yrs old, more than $13B has been spent and they still can't find the problem to their solution. Much easier to start with a problem than to end with one.

I used to think it was really strange that mainstream economists were so dismissive of #Bitcoin . Over time I've slowly realized the major employers of economists (finance and govt) benefit greatly from central banking and want to keep things that way.

In software engineering, there's a concept called technical debt. Over time the code base becomes unreadable, unmanageable, with undocumented behavior. Pretty sure this is going to happen to most crypto projects in 5 yrs.
