How many animals have died at the Miami Seaquarium? If you were to Google that question, it would tell you that more than 120 whales and dolphins have perished at the park, but that barely even scratches the surface.

Fun Fact! The rediscovery of this species was done on iNaturalist, by a user who has no profile photo, no description, and has made less than 50 observations. Their first two observations ever were two of these guys, and in an entirely new locality for the species to boot. Crazy.

Today's Critically Endangered Species of the Day is the Cofre de Perote Salamander (Isthmura naucampatepetl) Native to the Sierra Madre Oriental in Mexico, they were rediscovered in 2015, 34 years after the last sighting. Their major threats are habitat loss and Chytrid Fungus.

@vinn_ayy What a disrespect to our ancestors to suggest they only cared for something if they could get worth from it, as if caring for those who couldn't care for themselves isn't something older than society itself. Compassion is quite literally Human Nature.

@YNPierce Reminder that although we couldn't hear it, the cops could. These babies were screaming so loud it could be heard outside. The cops (all 100+ of them) sat and they listened. For how long they sat, and how close they were, they probably got headaches from how loud it was.

A humpback whale had been found dead on a beach in East Victoria, Australia. Interestingly - and somewhat concerningly - it does appear to be a white whale. With very little decomposition, it wouldn't of become bleached yet. Meaning it was almost certainly white while alive.

North Atlantic Right Whales are Critically Endangered, with only 70 or so breeding females. One of those precious 70, #1950 , was mother to 6 calves, including her youngest, born just two months ago. She was hit by a boat so hard it nearly split her spinal vertebrae in two.

Strand hunting is incredibly tricky, and very, very dangerous. The whales need to practice or they'll starve. For decades now many of the whales from this population have been observed returning the sea lions they grabbed back to the beach, unharmed, because they weren't hungry.

@DeVoutNumelran @Paleo_AntYT @AlecTheAllo Jesus Christ Dude. That kid is way too big to be seen as food by the snake, it's not just gonna "decide the kid is something it wants." The snake could accidentally coil too tight or be startled and strike, but it's not going to intentionally hurt the kid.

Friendly Reminder that the Miami SeaQuarium has only ever released FIVE cetaceans in their almost 70 years of operation, and that two of those five were returned to the sea by being pushed out of a helicopter.

@HonkIfUrHoary Let's not forget the zoo itself, an AZA accredited facility that decided they were fine letting a captive-born, invasive, apex predator roam free in simultaneously one of the most dangerous environments for a bird and a stronghold for native species. They are not free of blame.

@BirdCentralPark @MarsinCharge Anyway here's the USDA's definition of Invasive Species :) Invasive species don't need to breed to be invasive. That has never been a prerequisite. And, EVEN IF THEY DID, breeding is still very much possible here via hybridization with native owls.

Yes I KNOW it's an Adam Sandler movie. I did not go in expecting hyper-accurate reptile biology. But this is the first time I've seen a Tuatara portrayed in anything outside of documentaries, and it's just an Iguana clone. It's such a wasted opportunity.

This thing (which has a chameleon tongue, a regenerating tail, the ability to climb walls, is repeatedly referred to as a lizard and can be found wild in the Florida Everglades) is supposed to be a fucking Tuatara.

Since I'm talking about it, feel free to submit any and all animated ceta you know of, regardless of how obscure the media is, what species it is, or how accurate it is, if it's an animated cetacean, I want to see it!

I've been compiling every cetacean I can think of from animated media and the Wild Kratts Boto has gotta be my favourite so far. Their animal designs in general are pretty good (though there's a few ceta flops in there) but this is next level. I love him so much.

2 year old T109A3A, who recently lost their mother, T109A3 Spong after she stranded and subsequently drowned, has been given a name. kสทiisaแธฅiส”is, pronounced kwee-sa-hay-iss, means 'a talented and brave little hunter' in the local ส”iiแธฅatisส”atแธฅ (Ehattesaht) dialect.

The Serene Sea Center has observed a Common Dolphin 'calf-napping' an infant Harbor Porpoise from its mother for over an hour. The Common Dolphin was highly aggressive with the calf until it began echelon swimming with them, but attacked again when they tried to flee.

HUGE NEWS FROM PUNTE NORTE!! PTN-012, Antu is ALIVE! This girl was last seen in 2018 - 4 years ago - and was presumed deceased. With an estimated birth year around 1940-1950, it was thought her age simply caught up to her. But here she is!! Welcome Back Old Girl!

So, y'know. He supports some great people too!
