We’re in the throes of a pandemic - life and death stuff - why are people banging on about children catching up. Teachers should do what all good teachers do when schools resume - teach children from where they are at that time - without panic and pressure.

@JacquiDeevoy1 Not even a polite and compassionate reply. How many people have lost their humanity- or perhaps never had any in the first place? I really question the ‘humanity’ of the human species. Along with rational thinking, courage & integrity, it’s not inevitable in the human condition.

@MaryJoBeth54 @JaneCaro Utter nonsense. The one sure way to put children off reading is when they cannot lift all the words off the page readily. If you faced anyone - young or old - with books in a script they do not know in its entirety, they could neither read it nor enjoy it.

Phonics benefits all children when content-rich and pitched appropriately. Why wouldn't teachers teach systematically the most complex alphabetic code in the world, the skills of decoding and encoding - and building up knowledge of spelling word banks?
@natwexler

Yes, but: as @ehanford discovered, what works for most kids diagnosed as dyslexic--systematic phonics--would also prevent reading problems for most "garden variety" poor readers. We shouldn't reserve phonics for kids labeled dyslexic. It benefits most kids & doesn't hurt any.

I notice that tweets featuring reading instruction invariably reference academic literature and models but more rarely (barely at all) feature practicalities of lesson content and details of delivery. It’s the practical stuff that teaches the children though.

@AbbyJohnson @coccaloca I began to write that ‘women should abandon the olympics’ but actually everyone should - men and women standing together in protest to this mockery of women.

The Phonics International programme is DfE validated and is now entirely 'free'. If nothing else, consider investing some time to take a look at what is provided and reflect on why the 'core' resources and practices raise the likelihood of success:

Many people refer to the teaching of phonics as 'time limited' and this has largely led to the idea that phonics is 'baby stuff' - a perception by adults and children alike. I disagree. Phonics is a lifelong application of alphabetic code knowledge and 'adult stuff'.

To this day, two particular 10 yr old children haunt me that were in my care when I was a new teacher. Because they couldn't read, I thought it was because they could not be taught to read. I now know very differently. I know I could have taught them to read.

“In the case of reading instruction, if I am going to ask my fellow teachers to bravely (and critically) look at their own instructional practices and make necessary shifts, I need to name my own mistakes and misunderstandings in this area .” This. Is. A. Must. Read.

Watch what happens to honest people doing their jobs responsibly. Multiply this experience by how many I wonder. We may never know the full truth, but we certainly have a clear indication of immorality and corruption. And thankfully indications of some people with integrity.

I've packed a HUGE amount of phonics training into this free webinar with full course notes - I think it might break all records of rich content!

@beverleyturner But isn't it already happening here - being scaled up? When I first put my head above the parapet it was when discussion about vaccinating children began. I was shot down in flames and told that this would not happen in the UK. I noted the censorship -peers denied it. Now look.

@TonyHinton2016 And potential damage (adverse effects) from experimental medication for children compared to natural immunity?
