With The Zone of Interest Jonathan Glazer makes a film as completely disturbing and conceptually brilliant as Salo. I’m shaking. Banjaxed. Walked out of the screening in a state of catatonia. Major and then some. #Cannes2023

Please take a moment to read this review. At this outlet we encourage writers to cultivate a personal voice, to not muffle emotion, to try and identify how and why movies can converge with Actual Real Life, and try to write as if you're talking rather than telling. Thanks X

Phantom Thread is such an incredible movie, and for me it all comes together in its final scene. I realise that's quite a banal thing to say, but I wish more films did that. Not shock rug-pulling twists, more a grace note that enriches everything that has come before it.

If you want to emulate the Cannes experience right now: - put on a lanyard - wait in the street for 2.5 hrs - run inside and sit down - look around the room and wave for 20 mins - switch off lights - play Saint-Saëns’ Le Carnaval des Animaux - watch 3* film - drink carafe of rosé

Saw The Mule yesterday and shared a row with an elderly couple. They commented on the film very loudly throughout, mainly explaining plot points to one another. At one point, the woman says to the man, “Did you hear that Ron? He hates the internet too.”

There are an ungodly amount of great movies - new and old, from countries across the globe - playing in cinemas every week. While the studios fiddle with their big releases, take a chance on something that may not have the marketing budget to all-but-railroad you into your seat.

It's conspiracy-level strange how reliably BAFTA snub the actual best British filmmakers (Davies, Hogg, Leigh, et al) whose work is going to be celebrated in years to come. Realise those filmmakers likely don't care, but as a celebration of the Brit film industry, it's maddening.

We must try, in 2024, to elevate this film to the masterpiece status it deserves. Kondō was a genius the equal of Miyazaki and Takahata, and there just aren't that many films which meld gooey teen soap opera with full-bore existential shutdown in such a coherent and profound way.

Scénarios is proof that Jean-Luc Godard was innovating, challenging, fusing, truth-telling and mining the archives of his soul until almost the point of his final breath. Culminates in a shot – beautiful but haunting – of him writing the voiceover the day before his death.

Hosting an on-stage Q&A is really difficult btw. You need to prep. You need to have questions in the chamber. You need to be ready for "wild" audience Qs that need to be translated/paraphrased. You need to be ready if the person you're interviewing is not in a good mood.
