A note to our passionate TCM viewers: It’s been a tough week to say the least and I’m beyond heartbroken that we are losing so many brilliant colleagues who are also dear friends. I’ve seen all of your support online and it means so much to all of us. 1/2
I’ve saved this issue for decades because spending the day with Treat Williams in Vermont for Country Home magazine in 2003 was such an unforgettable experience for me. He and his wife Pam could not have been more friendly and welcoming. I’m shocked and saddened that he is gone.
My goal (and I know the other hosts agree) is to try to be a stabilizing and familiar presence in the months ahead. There will be some bumps, but we will all be on the road together. 2/2
Eagle-eyed TCM viewers will notice tomorrow that I don’t appear after the films I introduce. Same with
@BenMank77
tomorrow night and Alicia on Sunday. But fret not: This change has already been reversed and our “outros” will return in September for Ben, October for me and Alicia.
At the end of this week where we’ve mourned the passing of Betty White, Peter Bogdanovich, Sidney Poitier, and Marilyn Bergman, I’m more grateful than ever that
@TCM
exists to keep these artists’ memories alive and even give them opportunities to tell their stories later in life.
Had the chance to see
#AStarIsBorn
& it’s as excellent as the trailer. Pays tribute to the previous versions while remaining fresh & surprising. Best Picture & Best Song nominations on the way along with acting recognition for Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga & (finally!) Sam Elliott.
My very first
@TCM
hosting assignment was our Star of the Month tribute to Olivia de Havilland for her 100th birthday in 2016. The Snake Pit. The Heiress. To Each His Own. In This Our Life. I was then and will forever be mesmerized by her beautifully expressive face.
I met these two sweet
@TCM
viewers at the premiere of Bob Mackie’s new documentary Naked Illusion last night. Thanks for being so kind,
@imcarolburnett
and
@cher
!
To call Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter One “sprawling” doesn’t even begin to describe it. Kevin Costner introduces a head-spinning number of characters and interests us in them all. This first chapter is beautiful and ambitious; you’ll hear more about it on
@TCM
next month.
Just out of Oppenheimer and it’s as impressive and powerful as expected. I can easily see double-digit nominations: picture, director, screenplay, actor, supporting (RDJ), score, cinematography, editing, production design, and sound.
Never mind that the film is based on two real gay men. Or that the screenwriter said he wrote the characters as lovers. What’s implied here—that simply discussing the “homisexual” subtext of Rope turns a “good movie” into something else—is exactly why we have Pride night on TCM.
Why does
@tcm
@davekarger
have to turn a good movie like Rope into a homisexual innuendo laden production in the name of
#pridemonth
. Why is it so hard to let a movie be a movie? Why?🤷♀️🤦♀️
It’s a special one tonight on
@TCM
as I’m joined by Jennifer Grant—daughter of Cary Grant & Dyan Cannon—for a triple feature of her dad’s holiday-themed movies and discussion about the new
@BritBox_US
series Archie, which she and her mom exec-produced. See you tonight at 8ET/5PT.
Sitting for an hour with Piper Laurie at last year’s TCM Classic Film Festival is a memory I will forever cherish. Her Oscar-nominated performance in Children of a Lesser God always moves me. I’m so sad to hear she passed but am grateful that her beautiful work will live on.
I’m often asked to recommend the perfect introductory classic film. My answer is always Laura, a fascinating mystery and romance that runs under 90 minutes and features the gorgeous Gene Tierney. I’ve got it tonight on
@TCM
at 8ET/5PT for the final night of
#31DaysOfOscar
.
Exciting day for me on
@TCM
as I’ll now be delivering my intros from Ben Mankiewicz’s gorgeous set. (You’ll also see Alicia Malone there starting tomorrow.) Thanks to
@BenMank77
for letting us move in!
The first copy of my book, 50 Oscar Nights, just arrived! I’m officially an author and it feels so cool and surreal. Preorder yours here:
@TCM
@Running_Press
It’s Doris Day month on
@TCM
! Every Monday evening in March I’ll have a full lineup of her movies, and what better way to kick it off than with her spectacular film debut in 1948’s Romance on the High Seas. Join me tonight at 8ET/5PT and see why she became an instant megastar.
If you’re watching
#Hollywood
on Netflix and are curious about
#AnnaMayWong
, I’ve got two of her excellent films (Piccadilly & Daughter of Shanghai) tonight on
@TCM
as we kick off our series on Asian Americans in Hollywood. My special guest is the legendary actress Nancy Kwan!
On the eve of the new
@HBO
documentary on
#NatalieWood
and the release of her daughter Natasha Gregson-Wagner’s memoir, join me tonight on
@TCM
for an entire evening of her iconic films: Splendor in the Grass, The Searchers, Gypsy, and Rebel Without A Cause. She is dearly missed.
1917 is a masterful study of suspense, artistry, and timing. I’m in awe of how Sam Mendes and Roger Deakins pulled it off. Definite nominations for picture, director, cinematography, and design. Possibly score and sound editing too. A major wow.
Can you believe “Tiny Dancer” only reached No. 41 on the Billboard chart when it was released in 1972? Elton John told me that
#AlmostFamous
gave the song “a huge boost.” He rarely played it in concert before the film and now he almost never does a show without it.
#31DaysofOscar
I’m not an objective viewer but I really enjoyed
#Rocketman
. It’s a lovely tribute to Elton’s partnership with Bernie & the fantastical tone suits his life perfectly. Oscar chances hinge on reviews & biz, but as a true musical it’s a great bet for picture & actor at the Globes.
In honor of tonight’s
@TCM
lineup of films about brothers, here’s a shot of me with my big brother Mike. Anyone see the slight resemblance? See you in a few minutes for Rain Man, East of Eden, and The Brothers Karamazov!
It’s a fun one tonight on
@TCM
: I’m kicking off our weeklong tribute to Debbie Reynolds with her lovable granddaughter, actress Billie Lourd. Join us at 8ET/5PT as we introduce Singin’ in the Rain. You know you want to see it again!
@praisethelourd
Just out of the Telluride premiere of Andrew Haigh’s
#AllOfUsStrangers
, a sexy, supernatural, and ultimately shocking drama anchored by a vulnerable, pitch-perfect performance from Andrew Scott. Paul Mescal, Claire Foy & Jamie Bell are all also excellent. Fab ‘80s music to boot.
Big news: I’ve written a book! 50 OSCAR NIGHTS, from
@tcm
and
@running_press
, features my new interviews with 50 winners (like Nicole, Elton, Meryl, Whoopi, Marty, Julia, Clint & Halle) all about their big day. Coming Jan. ‘24 but you can preorder it now!
Some full-circle professional news: I’ve joined my friends at
@EW
(where I started my career a few centuries ago) as their awards correspondent for the this Oscar season. I’m kicking off the new gig with video interviews here in Toronto. And you’ll still be seeing me on TCM too.
In honor of
@TCM
’s birthday & Clifton Webb night tonight (and also because what else am I going to do these days), I decided to learn how to play David Raksin’s beautiful score from Laura. Join me &
@aliciamalone
at 8ET/5PT for Laura & three other terrific Clifton Webb films!
For years I’ve wanted to get my brilliant friend
@louisvirtel
on
@tcm
and it’s finally happening tonight. Join us for our Pride night at 8ET/5PT with the crucial documentary The Celluloid Closet followed by Rope & The Children’s Hour. I promise you will laugh and you will learn.
I’m excited and honored to be hosting the first-ever Oscar viewing party at the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. You’ll even see me pop up once or twice to talk about the event on the ABC red carpet show. Happy Oscars Day!
@academymuseum
#oscarsnightatthemuseum
I too am sad that our
@TCM
Star of the Month tribute to Doris Day is ending tonight. But at least we’ll get to see her with Cary Grant, James Garner, AND Paul Lynde before it’s all over. See you at 8ET/5PT as we kick off the final evening with That Touch of Mink.
Kicking off the
@TCM
Classic Film Festival with my friend (and true icon of my teenage years)
@ericstoltz
who just so happens to be a big TCM fan. So many reasons to love him!
Just watched The Color Purple and there’s so much to admire from the costumes to the choreography to the fantastic cast but for me it is all about this phenomenal performance. Bravo, Danielle Brooks.
Thinking about these two handsome gents (photo is from last March) and looking forward to the day we all can hang out together again. In the meantime at least I get to see them on TV.
@BenMank77
@EddieMuller
@TCM
It’s been a month since the lovely Jane Powell passed away. Join me all afternoon tomorrow on
@TCM
as we pay tribute with four of her best films: Luxury Liner, Small Town Girl, Royal Wedding, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. She was always one of our most loyal supporters.
Feels great to be back in a proper TV studio for the first time in over six months. Taking all the important and necessary precautions while shooting Star of the Month programming for
@TCM
. See you soon!
I love it when I get to feature a classic star who’s still with us on
@TCM
, and tonight we’ve got one of the best: the 97-year-old national treasure that is Dick Van Dyke. Join me at 8ET/5PT for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Bye Bye Birdie, and his lesser-known comedy The Art of Love.
Big night for me on
@TCM
tonight as my dear friend Alicia Malone interviews me about three of the films (and actresses) featured in my new book 50 OSCAR NIGHTS: Children of a Lesser God (Marlee Matlin), Bonnie and Clyde (Estelle Parsons) & Shampoo (Lee Grant). Join us at 8ET/5PT!
.
@CameronCrowe
has co-written a stage musical based on
#almostfamous
which ran at San Diego’s Old Globe Theater in the fall of 2019. They’re hoping for a Broadway debut in 2022. Now that’s something to look forward to!
#31DaysOfOscar
#TCMParty
And so it begins! Signing early copies of my new book 50 OSCAR NIGHTS for some of the fantastic Academy Award winners featured in its pages. It comes out on January 23 but you can preorder it here!
Just out of
#EmiliaP
érez and I have never in my life seen a performance like the one Karla Sofía Gascón delivers. Funny, emotional, astonishing, multilayered, and beyond deserving of a history-making Oscar nomination.
I’m hosting a super fun
@TCM
Spotlight starting tonight called Met On Set. Each Thursday in December I’ll tell the stories of how the most iconic Hollywood couples first got together. We kick it off at 8ET/5PT with the biggies: Gable & Lombard, Hepburn & Tracy, and these two ⬇️.
Oh, how The Poseidon Adventure scared the crap out of me when I saw it as a little kid. I’m introducing it tonight at 8ET/5PT on
@TCM
as the kickoff to a monthlong spotlight on movies about life at sea...can’t wait to see if it freaks me out almost 40 years later.
Next month, join us and your favorite voices in film, pop culture and politics as we look at the most significant political films of all time.
Our new, limited series Making Change begins Sept. 6.
I was a charter subscriber to Entertainment Weekly in 1990, started there as an intern in 1994, and feel so grateful to have worked there for 17 years in its heyday. I’ll never forget the thrill of holding my first cover story. It’s a sad day but I’ll always root for the brand.
Oscar trivia time:
#VirginiaWoolf
was the first movie whose entire credited cast was nominated for Academy Awards. Talk about a Fab Four!
#TCMFF
#TCMParty
She told us to make sure to stay til the end so we knew she had something epic up her sleeve. So cool to see
@carrieunderwood
duet with her own idol Axl Rose at
#Stagecoach
last night. 👏🎸🤠
The lovely Mariette Hartley and I want to let you know that I’m presenting her excellent western Ride the High Country today on
@TCM
at 2pm eastern, 11am pacific. Also features the final film performance of the guy who gets my vote for all-time best-looking star: Randolph Scott.
Could there be any better way to spend a Friday night than with a triple feature from the late great Madeline Kahn? Beats me. Hope to see you on
@TCM
starting at 8ET/5PT for Young Frankenstein, Simon, and What’s Up, Doc?
This brilliant performer, wonderful human being, force of nature, and provider of one of the true highlights of my life is celebrating a birthday today. So I’m celebrating her. Lots of love and best wishes to
@IAmCicelyTyson
!
Lana Turner day on
@TCM
calls for a brand new suit! Thanks to our stylist
@glamourpussLLC
for always making us look presentable. I’ll see you tonight at 8ET/5PT for The Bad and the Beautiful.
This is what it looks like when you interview the entire cast of
#NightmareAlley
in New York and Cate Blanchett has to do it from home in London at 4am. A total pleasure to spend a little time with this phenomenal group.
It’s Meryl Streep night tonight on
@TCM
! I’ve got three of her 17 Oscar-nominated performances for Best Actress (A Cry in the Dark, The French Lieutenant’s Woman, and Postcards from the Edge) starting at 8ET/5PT. Join me and we’ll sob, swoon, and laugh together.
Marilyn Monroe may never have earned an Academy Award nomination, but she proved herself as much more than just a pin-up in the two films I’ve got back-to-back tonight on
@TCM
: Bus Stop (opposite nominee Don Murray) and Some Like It Hot. Join me at 8ET/5PT for
#31DaysOfOscar
.
Robert Downey Jr. is finally an Oscar winner 31 years after his first nomination. But Henry Fonda had to wait even longer between his first nomination and eventual win…41 years!
This is Crowe’s fave
#AlmostFamous
scene: “It’s a metaphor for the movie. Feeling the reverberation of something special but gone except for the treasured memory. She’s dancing among the trash, feeling the magic that was within those walls earlier in the evening.”
#31DaysOfOscar
Glenn Ford and Rita Hayworth made for such a sizzling on-screen pairing that they acted opposite each other in five films over the course of 25 years. I’ve got four of them tonight on
@TCM
starting at 8ET/5PT...including, of course, their steamiest: 1946’s GILDA.
The last surviving
#VirginiaWoolf
cast member, George Segal, passed away 6 weeks ago at age 87. Along with his Oscar nomination, he received five Golden Globe nods, winning two: for Most Promising Newcomer in 1965 & for Best Actor in a Comedy for 1973’s A Touch of Class.
