Design tools and resources Iβm using in 2024 π
Tools

Today I'm officially starting my
@webflow
journey!
I'm gonna be honest.
I've been writing front-end for a long time.
So, I've always been skeptical about no-code tools.
Today that changes.
I'm gonna be open minded, revisit my portfolio, and
#buildinpublic
.
Let's go!
π£ To all designers who've NOT been impacted by layoffs.
You are not only very fortunate but in an extremely important position.
Our profession is relying on you to demonstrate the impact design can make in no uncertain terms. Do your best work in 2024!

I can't believe the response I've gotten from the
@webflow
community!
Wow! How encouraging!
Looking forward to sharing my journey and connecting with all of you! π
It's been great start to February!
Goals for next week:
β Share some new design work
β Post a few threads on design systems
β Start rebuilding my portfolio in
@webflow
#buildinpublic
If anyone has thought about learning Webflow but hasn't started yet, join me! (DM)
Here's what I've learned so far:
β Video tutorials are as good as it gets and super fun!
βThey make confusing concepts easy to understand!
β You're really learning how to code (but with a UI)
What's up, Designers!
Here's my Day 3 shot for

Been thinking a lot about this recently when I see βDesign Roastsβ.
Take a weak design and outshine it to build credibility.
Are we potentially celebrating outshining students and less experienced designers?
Offer feedback instead.
Thatβs a win, win.
I just started my journey on X two weeks ago.
At the moment, I only have a few followers. That's okay!
People don't know me yet.
I have lots to share though, including 15+ years of experience in design, code, and leadership. I also specialize in enterprise design systems.
We need to stop art directing and micromanaging the browser.
When possible:
β Stop using breakpoints
β Start using implicit grids
β Start using fluid type and space
β Start making axiomatic design decisions
Learn from one of the best π
I've been SO busy lately I've gotta reach into my archive.
Here's a few little doodles when I was helping define the spot illustration styles for Liberty Mutual. Nothing spectacular but a little something to share while I work on some of the more flashy stuff. π

Very cool!
We use Dovetail (
@hidovetail

Will definitely checking this out for other use cases.
Thanks for sharing! π
If I could go back in time, here's the advice I would give myself:
β First and foremost, you are good enough!
β Focus on the things you can control.
β Take good care of your physical and mental health.
β Take this time to learn as much as you can.
@disco_lu
Iβm in favor of prioritizing discoverability over variant construction.
Cramming all options under one variant group forces users to explore all props to figure out what the options are.
Putting component βtypesβ in separate variants shows users at a glance the major options
Introducing Harmony β a new kind of color picker.
Make anything beautiful with color harmonies at your fingertips.
An in-depth article on this will drop this weekend over at . Make sure to subscribe.
@disco_lu
Prototypes are for testing ideas at different stages of design. As confidence in a solution grows, fidelity increases through iterative testing. Tooling may vary depending on the fidelity needed for a test, but Figma is always a great place to start.
@joeyabanks
I couldnβt have been more wrong about mobile back in the day and couldnβt believe how quickly masks were adopted during the pandemic so based on both of those you might be right.
Late last year I broke my ankle running.
I was just a few miles away from a new personal best. Wanted to quit for good.
Yesterday, early into a run I wanted to quit but managed to push thru it.
It reminded me that overcoming your own mind is one of the best reasons to run.
Design Tip:
Great musicians and artists study and learn from the best.
They recreate masterpieces and play cover songs.
They learn and hone their skills.
If you want to become a better designer, go copy one of your favorite designs.
I guarantee you'll learn something.
π£ Calling all Designers, No-code enthusiasts, and Front-end devs who have worked on building a following on X over the past year...
What's something important you do every day, that you wish you had started sooner?
@NateBaldwinArt
Iβll take that a step further.
Tokens IRL are hard. Theyβre great for design systems teams and core components.
But Iβve yet to come across users that are psyched to learn a bunch of abstractions to extend the system.
They just wanna move fast and do their job.
Can't wait for Day 2 of

IMO - Design tools are for designing, prototyping, and testing ideas.
The working software however is whatβs providing both user and business value.
While most design decisions are made in design tools, theyβre only mockups until theyβre in the working software.
For that
@disco_lu
You cannot drop something like this on a Friday when Iβm busy! Not cool!
My knee jerk reaction is the upside to semantic tokens is if youβre distributing them to product teams to build product specific components, they ship with implicit guidance.
βUse this token for this
@disco_lu
Really enjoyed your presentation Luis!
I should mention that our team had a long and spirited debate about whether or not to include a component layer.
After weighing tradeoffs, we ended up on your side!
We have a robust set of component specific tokens. π
@kyleanthony
Are you saying this was caused by branding and perception change alone?
Meaning being perceived as an agency rather than an independent freelancer?
Trying to figure out if this is causation or correlation?
This isn't some kind of cheap engagement trick like I've seen on this app.
These are heartfelt words.
Please help RT and spread this message.
I'd appreciate it and I think your followers might too. β€οΈ
Because of this, I spent hours every day applying for jobs and looking at other designers portfolios, trying to figure out why I wasn't able to land a job.
I couldn't figure it out. It was an extremely difficult time for me that I'll never forget.
Figma Tip π β¨
Put nested components on their own page.
πͺΊ Nested Components / [ Component Name ]
β¦ This will keep your library DRY
β¦ Users will only see the main component in Assets
β¦ It will clean up your metrics.
As it turned out, I was being impacted by macroeconomic conditions that were completely outside of my control.
If I could go back and tell myself that, I'm not sure I would.
The belief that I wasn't good enough put a fire inside of me to learn that has never fizzled out. π₯
@makermattevans
Agreed!
I'd add one caveat about usability though. The more we require users to memorize abstractions, the more friction and frustration there will be using variables/tokens.
User: Why do I need to remember "space-10" really means 4rem?
Figma has done a great job showing the

Been experimenting with Leonardo color tools, and they're a game changer for supporting modes.
It takes some getting used to, but nothing compared to creating accessible, uniform color systems by eye. I can't even imagine what went into building this.

IMO the source of truth is what users experience in working software.
Our Figma components, patterns, and prototypes are where solutions originate but if they donβt make it into production, theyβre just ideas no matter how great
@omlet_dev

πΆοΈ Hot Take:
The source of truth is what users experience. Everything else is the work that leads to that experience.
Components, patterns, and recipes may originate in design tools but the value is realized in working software.
We may have beautiful work and prototypes but if

Agree that great design is messy! But design systems at their best are curations of great design.
If your project is blue sky, go wild! But if youβre working within brand constraints which most are then using established components is a massive efficiency gain across design and

Great way to kick off my journey on this app.
99% of the time you don't need:
β More design inspiration
β To use the latest new tools
β Or to have the biggest budget
You need to accept the constraints, free yourself from distraction, and focus on doing your best work.

I built my standing desk myself for half the cost and twice the quality. Not sure about the treadmill but happy to share how I made the desk. It was actually a fun project.
@bakharew
Really like this. I also like the premise of giving little moments like this more attention. If you pick your spots like you did here, this can add a lot of personality to the experience. Nice work. Creative. π
To all designers who have been affected by layoffs, I know how difficult this is. I was laid off during the 2008 recession. It took me a long time to find a new job. I sincerely thought I wasn't good enough. π
@EmyLascan
Why not both? If you do go with that dark version, youβll want to watch out for accessibility. Right navbar button and link wonβt be accessible on dark.
