Anxieties about immigration have been a persistent feature of British politics in the context of imperial decline. But these anxieties were also first produced by imperial adventures. Long before Windrush, the West Indies haunted the English imagination.

With a week to go, the syllabus for the Stuart Hall ( @StuartHallFdn ) class is finally locked. I toyed with the idea of moving Hall's writing on race and diaspora earlier, but I think it's easier to use Cultural Studies to lay out his theoretical commitments. Excited for this one!

Some of our colleagues might resent the fact that UChicago economists are released from obligations to teach in the Social Sciences Core. But in this case, at least, it serves to protect our students from exposure to this kind of willful stupidity. Try reading a book.

There are plenty of reasonable critiques of Jim Scott’s work. But I am disturbed by the idea that we should condemn him for the errors and—for him, lamentable—things he may have done in his 20s. This is a pretty reactionary, life-without-parole approach to thinking human beings.

@caoilfhionnanna So sorry to hear that you have to deal with this outrageous harassment Caoilfhionn, but also so grateful to have someone of your integrity, forcefulness, and courage fighting the good fight. We are all in your debt.

If people want to debate “authenticity” in Irish cinema, I will defend to the last the fact that the upstairs carpet in @ColmBairead ’s An Cailín Ciúin ( @quietgirlfilm ) is the most accurate cinematic representation of 1980s rural Ireland, followed (closely) by the milking parlour.

Watching all these assholes who are shocked—*shocked* I say—that violence has touched politics, who daily defend a genocide against Palestinian men, women, and children, is so fucking grotesque.

Remember, when billionaire donors say they want to support universities, what they really mean is that they want to control them. This is @Harvard as Herbalife, and it is the job of the Harvard Corporation to see this challenge off if it is to maintain its academic independence.

Although one of the first texts in the Cambridge School of intellectual history ( @cambridge_cpt ) dealt with the political thought of common lawyers—Pocock’s “Ancient Constitution”—this tradition has largely stood apart from the work of English legal historians at Cambridge. 1/n

Stuart Hall would have been 90 today. Seems like a fitting occasion to put the finishing touches on the syllabus for next year’s new class.

This is odd. Israel does seem to have a plan for postwar Gaza—namely: no Gaza, or Gaza-as-parking-lot. This is what the U.S. government endorsed when it gave Netanyahu carte blanche. How did they not realize this, these best and brightest few?

For all the holier than thou Harvard alums celebrating today, I hope an enterprising @thecrimson reporter is hunting after your undergrad thesis in the Library to run it through the latest plagiarism software. How confident are you in your note-taking thirty years ago?

The ever-impressive Caoilfhionn Gallagher KC ( @caoilfhionnanna ) offers a characteristically succinct account the treatment of Jimmy Lai, the global threat to press freedom, and the acute risks posed by the National Security Law for Hong Kong.

The cruelty of these @UKLabour folks who have spent 4 years undermining Corbyn is staggering. Sure, you don’t like him & are excited to see him go. Fine. But think about the people who just went door-to-door for a better future. They are your future. They will remember your glee!

Almost exactly 19 years ago, I had my first ever meal in Chicago at Salonica in Hyde Park, where I picked up this trusty keychain. It would be a shame were the keychain to outlast this neighborhood staple. So, get your breakfast orders in, and get this place back on its feet!

@daraghjgrant I’ve noticed the maitre d has been serving and handling everything else he usually does as well. Regular waitresses and bus boy all gone. And now they’re closing at 3. I asked the MD about it, and he said things are not good. Seems like they’re trying to stay afloat.

Ridiculous and unnecessary escalation on the part of UChicago, and an undue burden to place on students and faculty. I disagree with the use of disciplinary procedures in this (or any similar) instance, but to add criminal charges to internal disciplinary processes is outrageous.

Our students & faculty should be resting. Instead we’re in court today, because UChicago—the supposed champion of free speech—decided to criminally charge 26 students and 2 faculty for attending a peaceful sit in.

I’m excessive in the degree to which I cite and footnote—a point of some amusement among my friends. Whatever, these are foibles born of an academy with little to say. It was surely better when people like CLR James could write this way without worrying about giving Marx his due.
