A key indicator of the United States’ second-tier status as a soccer nation is that instead of sitting down to watch the World Cup final right now, I’m heading out the door to coach a scheduled youth game.

My advice for most college ⚽️ recruits. Go where you can play right away. Unless you have pro prospects, why act like you're building to a next step? Don't waste 1-2 of your last four years sitting on a bench. Drop a level and play as a freshman. It's way more fun. #collegesoccer

A lesson for young coaches I was just retaught: The character of parents in a youth team is vital to the success of your team culture. NEVER bring a poor character parent into your team, no matter the talent of their player. It is never worth it in the long run. #youthsoccer

I've heard parents complain recently about the level of D1 colleges recruiting their kids. These are girls with colleges interested who will 100% play D1 soccer if they want. In the spirit of perspective, I wanted to share some bad, back-of-the-envelope recruiting math...

I fail to understand the criticism Lindsey Horan gets from some quarters of the USWNT fan base. Uber-technical player with a really nuanced tactical vision that’s rare in the player pool and maybe even the coaching staff. What’s not to love about her? I don’t get it. #uswnt

One thing I believe wholeheartedly is in the US we try to ID and select “elite” players at far too young an age. This is true at club level and even more true of the YNT set-up. The pools are far too small far too early. #youthsoccer #usynt #talentid

Celebrate any opportunity your kid has to play in college. Don't dismiss the accomplishment. If a college is interested, your kid has beaten seriously long odds. Get them a cake, blow up the balloons, and throw a party. . ***odds for boys are much worse

College soccer would be better with no re-entry and limited sub rules. Flow of play would be improved, control and change of tempo would become important, and coaches would have to improve in so many ways without the ability to intervene constantly running subs. #collegesoccer

PSA for youth players… It’s a really bad look when you start flaking on your club team during senior year after you’ve committed. Your future college coach will notice. It’s not 100% defining, but it is a telling indicator of your character. #youthsoccer #collegesoccer

I’m in the minority, but I don’t find value in recruits whose primary attribute is speed. If a wonderful player is also fast… fantastic. But a really fast kid without technique/tactics/IQ is not interesting to me. It’s too limiting on how you can play. #collegesoccer #recruiting

I'm different than most. I'd prefer an incoming freshman over an incoming transfer. I like to teach, grow players in the program, in the system. The longer you're here, the better you get in this team. Given similar options, I'll take the player who has four years. #collegesoccer

Tagging coaches in social media posts and commenting with a cool graphic of your schedule is all great. Definitely keep doing that. But the single best route to getting your game on a recruiting schedule for a coach is still to email it and express your interest in the school.

Can we scrap the “iron sharpens iron” saying in youth soccer? It’s a lazy metaphor and encourages parents to force their kids into the hardest environments 100% of the time. Young players need hard days. But they also need wide variety to grow their passion and skill long term.

Be careful of coaches who tout their resume a lot. “I have an A license.” “I trained (some pro).” “I played on the national team.” Not always a red flag, but usually. Reminds me of my favorite boss ever who says, “If you have to tell someone you’re good, you’re not very good.”

Had a blah session yesterday with a team. Nothing dramatic, just low energy. Reflecting on it, it was my fault. My energy wasn’t right. I was flat. Players matched me. We got stuck in a malaise. Friendly reminder: every day isn’t perfect and it’s not always the players’ fault.

A harsh truth of sport is that you can work hard, sacrifice, dedicate yourself, and still fail. You aren’t guaranteed a college scholarship, a starting spot, an all-conference selection. Hard work is the baseline for entry, not a guarantee of success.

Soccer parents remember few kids play in college and almost no one goes pro. Relax, let them play, let them quit, let them specialize, let them dabble, let them make teams and get cut. Let kids guide their childhoods. It’s more fun for everyone. Your angst is wasted on sport.

Fast players are the most underserved by ⚽️ coaches. They’re not taught to the same level because speed allows them to get away with mistakes. Outcome-oriented youth, HS, and college coaches let it slide because it worked. Results in players who never max out their potential

I don’t know how I feel about posting scores for spring games. Isn’t the point of these games to get all the players some time and see what they can do? Posting scores for exhibitions doesn’t feel kosher to me. #collegesoccer #springseason

A long way to say that if your kid isn't very clearly (and I mean VERY clearly) one of the best players in every game at these "elite" levels, they are unlikely to land at the top 100 programs. Extend things a bit if they play in a top team in their league, but the point holds.

On college levels: William Carey is one of a small group of programs that are clearly the class of NAIA women's soccer. Comparing them to my in-state D1s: If William Carey played all the D1 schools in Georgia, the only one I would pick to beat them is UGA. #collegesoccer

A lot of players would immediately be in a better training environment if their coach threw out the session plan, set up some 4v4 fields, and walked away. #freeplayisimportant #youthsoccer #collegesoccer

There are a lot of people who watch more of the level than I do so I don’t pretend to be authoritative, but for my money Jordynn Dudley is the best forward playing college soccer right now #collegesoccer #myhermanntrophywinner

I love unselfish players. Here, Sarah Woodall and Abigail Batts from my 07 girls skip half-chances, play all the extra passes and set up an Alexa DeJoseph finish. I missed the game due to a college conflict. They said I would post one of their goals. They were right. #youthsoccer

My U17 girls fall season ends at ECNL FL in January. I give you a goal from them daily until then. This one a passage of play I love, a just missed and characteristically brazen lay-off attempt in front of goal, then Lydia Robertson tearing the cover off the ball. #youthsoccer

This is the last youth team I coached. These kids mean the world to me and all but the three ‘25 grads start their freshmen college seasons this week. If you got one of them in your college program, congratulations. They’re special people. Good luck girls!! #collegesoccer
