Botany and Mycology twitter: your ID help please. We found three if these today. They LOOK fungal, hemispherical with load of jelly like spheres inside. Not host specific and not directly on the leaf in all cases

Not gonna lie, i've been waiting a year for this day: new Leica dissecting microscope, LED ring light and camera attachment so we can image specimens in the fungarium. It's proper fucking beautiful to be in the 21st century.
I know that the clickbait headlines attract the simplest of responses, but this stuff is important. It isnt erasing history, its expanding it, enhaning it, and adding far greater depth to a very 1-sided version of events
We found 8 frames of mushroom stamps in a side room! they are now up on the wall in the fungarium. Turns out that a former Head of Mycology, David Pegler, used to consult stamp companies so that the fungi were correct for the coutries they were being issued in

So, whilst I was in work yesterday, it had been decided to go around the labs gathering every spare box of nitrile gloves, mask, pair of goggles they can find to take along to the local hospital. So very proud of my colleagues

but make it mushroomy If there isanything in the world that is Queer as fuck, its fungi: totally screwing with your binaries, your ciseries and notions of biological sex-eries. Brace yourself from some Fungal Queerness on the tweetiverse this month.
Anybody in the cicada tsumai areas where Brood X is emerging: if you come across many with Massospora infection and need to send them to a nice fungal repository institution - please let me know :) We would❤️some here for research like the Fungal Tree of Life

I dont know if I bragged about this yet, but we wrote a book! It's bloody brilliant and really beautiful. Until summer it's only available at Kew and , after that global domination! (buy it)

In 2018, new species on fungi found on an oil painting, a childs backpack and under a person's fingernail. Millions to still discover, including your fridge probably :)
Exciting time in fungarium land at the moment. All down to a chance discovery in our "Wall Of Shame", this is the part of the fungairum where unidentified fungi sit awaiting some love. Currently we have a few hundred boxes of fungi from all over the world wanting that love. 1/6
Ladies, gents and those who have transcended such boring norms... this is Cordyceps caloceroides K-M 1434437; an entomopathogen that parsitises bird eating tarantulas. The tarantula here is about 3 inches long. the fungus, about 9 inches.
So, "trained people": they cant be trusted. Its definitely going to be a dropdown. The moral of the story is if you give people freedon of judgement to use in databases, they'll be fucking dumb. The End.

Getting "an abdominal pudding so horrific and bizarre that it eventually eats their genitalia and makes their butts fall off" tattooed on me somewhere
🐜 Do fungus-infected insects feel pain?
🩺 Can we harness the medicinal power of fungi?

Finally got around to making the fungal dyes look prettier; gone is the crappy old selloptape and a piece of cardboard, in is a nice closable box and plastozote base.
Just had a loan returned - about 12 specimens - that were borrowed for morph. analysis and DNA sequencing. All have nice little slips enclosed with them with ALL the info we want on them, even the ones that didnt work. Lots of brownie points!!

As of tomorrow I am furloughed. I am going to need to structure in my life for the next 2 months. Weekly fungi videos on Fridays for starters. Lots of books, learn to do the embroidery that's been sat there for 9 months, lots of DIY jobs about the boat.
See you on the flipside

Big Week; it's been 12 years since I started here at Kew, and it my last week as Fungarium Curator. It has been a blast but it's time to move on, by the end of the month I start a new job.. 1/2
Here it comes! the colossal fungarium seqeuncing project. if you know any upcoming grads who fancy stint of work, we have 16 posts to go berserk in the fungarium and Sample. The. Shit. out of the collection.
We had the Kent University Ethnobotany students in yesterday for a tour (obviously we did the orgasm fungus, hallucinogens and zombies) and I discovered that caliornia is the only US state with an official state lichen..and it's a beauty; Ramalina menziessii

In early to do an online talk for med students, they asked for Cordyceps and Psilicybe stuff...so time to break into the class A drug cupboard! All the fav fungi today
24 hours on planes: 18 hrs on one, a diversion and a missed connection, smooth customs and security all round. Home from Madagascar and we are all shattered
Brightening my day, a present from one of the Hort staff; Corn Smut (Ustilago maydis) on maize grown in

Bad for the maize but the infected kernals are a central and south American delicacy. On its way into the

Im a total fucking sucker. Bought this glorious beast, in large part because it has a cluster of mushrooms. Minor regret, but we just got a payrise after 3 years of Tories blocking them..so fuck the Tories, and Hail Lego fungi!
