OK, I need to share this with you because if it makes my brain feel scratchy it's only fair it does the same to yours! This is courtesy of Sam Cappleman-Lynes on our Discord server:

Oh it looks SO wrong.... 😆😆😆
One year ago today, I solved a puzzle we called The Miracle Sudoku. It's a 25-min journey that starts with deep scepticism and ends in astonishment. Nearly 3million people have watched due to Twitter sharing (YouTube never pushed it). Thank you all.
Very sad day: Maki Kaji, the "godfather of sudoku", has died in Japan. At Cracking The Cryptic we owe him a great debt - he not only popularised the puzzle we love but he insisted that his company Nikoli's sudokus should be handmade. He's a legend.

If you've forgotten to buy your loved one a Valentine's Day card and they like sudoku then they'll surely be grateful to receive this...

Yes we saw your tweet
@jamescharles
and we're so delighted you're enjoying our videos - it made our day!
Thank you for helping to spread the word that puzzles are awesome (and a good way to destress in these weird times) :)
update omg he saw my tweet! 🥺❤️ I’ve been binge watching his channel for the past few days, the videos are SO interesting but also help me relax! if you like puzzles, I would 100% recommend checking simon’s channel out 😊
Sometimes we receive humbling feedback on how sudoku of all things has helped our community. Today we received this email from Beate, which I reproduce with her permission. Please do RT - there might be others who could benefit from some sudoku therapy!

Our apologies, this evening's video will be slightly late. Simon had (far) too much wine at lunchtime and then embarked on a puzzle that proved quite tricky.
Whether the trickiness was related to the vino consumption we will let you judge!!

A really nice clue from today's Times crossword:

Should we do more of these? If so, do let us know if you see (or write!) a particularly good clue.

Our most popular video is called A Sudoku With Only 4 Given Digits. One of our viewers, Jaime Stearns, decided to make the puzzle featured in that video and its solution (SPOILER ALERT) out of... cookies!!
Never has a magic square looked so tasty :)
I said I'd take a picture of my graph paper from last night's stream of The Witness...
Thanks so much to everyone who joined - it was a blast... (but if I ever hear those birds again 🤣)...
We're not sure we should publicise this too much but today is our anniversary! On 26 August 2017 we solved our first sudoku on the channel...
Things have come a long way. Especially for Simon's hair...

Hello. We are 'Cracking The Cryptic' and have 400k subs on YouTube. We solve very hard sudoku puzzles :) Let us know if you'd like us to help.
Ryan just texted me he spent over an hour watching someone on YouTube solve a Sudoku puzzle and was so excited about the ending he asked if I wanted to watch it.... with him... so he could watch it again.
Welcome to this glimpse into my marriage.
Overheard in the back seat:
10yo: how did u solve that
12yo: I tried 2 paths and only one worked
10yo: so u bifurcated?
12yo: um I guess so
10yo: [shaking head] that's horrible
I'm 💀. You've ruined us
@crypticcracking
Sometimes our viewers astonish us.
@Wecoc1
has created this CtC-themed pinball machine. It's got our voices, a 3 in the corner and a chocolate teapot. It's magical.
It's launched! Our Kickstarter campaign to create the best sudoku book ever is now live - so exciting 😍
Please do check it out and anyone who RTs will make two sudoku geeks very happy!
Wow. This is just so surreal. Thank you to everyone for all the positive comments about our video. Imagine if I'd just turned the webcam off the moment I opened the puzzle....
Can't think of a better way to spend some time on my birthday than with CtC viewers so would anyone be interested in a YouTube premiere this evening - say 6.45pm...?
Ok... about tonight's video... you may not need your Netflix subscription to get through your evening.
Can anyone guess the name of the evil constructor behind today's puzzle?

What happens when "Normal sudoku rules CANNOT apply."?
This puzzle is completely bonkers but also barbarically brilliant. Prepare to unlearn everything you thought you knew about solving sudoku :)
Oh my... what is this?! Seems like a real book.... with the greatest sudoku puzzles one could possibly dream of....
It's almost ready!!!!
You can still pre-order it here!
I spend the beginning of most days failing to get my head round a cryptic crossword. Brain's not set up right, see. My old friend

, on the other hand, sets them. Here's somebody cracking his excellent puzzle yesterday. If you've ever wondered how they work, start here.
What did you do on New Years Eve?
We surprised one viewer in Germany who had worked out a telephone number by solving a series of puzzles. He called the number and we were able to wish him a happy birthday :)
Brilliant idea from Hartmut and we love Thomas's reaction!
American
@GymnastSteve
is a legend. In this video, he talks about finding Cracking The Cryptic, solving Gliperal's Balance Loop sudoku & speed-running the Rubik's Cube. He'll go on to win an Olympic medal on the pommel horse.
@USAGym
This made us laugh... it turns out that (with HUGE amounts of editing) I can be made to sound quite mad... luckily you all know I'm sane as sane can be... Nori nori. :)
We absolutely loved

Hi
@crypticcracking
I've been drawing some of the streamers and youtubers that have helped me through the pandemic as a little thank you. I love your videos and find them strangley relaxing. I hope you like these little drawings and have a wonderful day :-)

Very sad to hear the death of the wonderful Stephen Sondheim - a man much revered in the crossword world. He introduced themed cryptics to America and we were big fans of his puzzles... as you can see in this video where Mark solves one.

With apologies, this evening's 8.30pm video clocks in at 2hrs 10mins long. It features one of the most brilliant (and challenging) sudokus we've ever seen. And a ruleset of just three short sentences.
Any guesses or hopes for its title/constructor?!

Here's today's clue - this time from The Independent crossword by the brilliant
@DaveGorman
, who also happens to be quite a funny bloke :)

- The Phistomefel Ring, explained in 59 seconds....
Yes I know I normally take about 10 minutes to explain it and use scrabble tiles...
Here's the CtC garden this morning... beautiful but bitter :)
And a heads-up that you'll need an extra large bucket of popcorn tonight...
Simon does battle with a 100% rated, 5* puzzle :)
We've included all this week's clues and their answers in the thread below! Please do Like/RT if you're enjoying these so we know whether to continue doing them.
Apologies we had to take down tonight's 8.30pm video as it features 2 mins of "empty chair" as Simon got called away. Given we're meant to edit out breaths from videos now apparently, this 2 mins seemed an excessive ask!
It'll be up again asap. Sorry!
Set Equivalence Theory (SET) is probably the most powerful sudoku technique there is. Lots of people want to understand it better and this puzzle by Aad van de Wetering basically teaches you how it works... Enjoy.
If anyone is interested in a watching a grown man cry then consider tuning in to tomorrow's livestream 9pm UK time... Simon will have a go at the new Phistomefel puzzle.
You can find the puzzle here:
9pm UK time Sunday....
A couple of years ago, we solved a puzzle called The Miracle Sudoku by Mitchell Lee. It had 2 given digits.
Now Emre Kolotoglu has made this puzzle... zero given digits and just some question marks outside the grid... surely The Ultimate Miracle!?
Two non-sudoku things for your delectation!
1. Here's a cryptic crossword video we made today:
2. And at dinner last night, my friend Shane presented us with this fascinating chess problem...
Is this position possible after black's 9th move?
Here's a cryptic clue to the title of the puzzle in tonight's premiere:
Unreasonable desire to destroy an absent soldier
And for those worried I might not be getting cake...
Three things:
1. Tonight's puzzle is popcorn-worthy and by a brand new setter. One of the MOST amazing (almost) killer sudokus I've ever solved.
2. Tomorrow 10am: we'll release Phistomefel's April Fool video as a bonus :)
3. Tomorrow 4pm: Qinlux' Sudoku Hunt goes live.
