I somehow talked my 6 year old onto a 9U baseball team and made sure the coach knew I understand he's not gonna get in much, but just coach his ass during practice and I'm good with it. They got their first W today and he didn't see the field at all in 2 games. He comes out of
Had to cut ties with 2 of our football players today. Countless chances to fix their behavior and buy into being better people. Reached a point where they have declared they aren't even trying to do right things. Our program will not be one where active disobedience is allowed.
Breaks my heart I coach in a community where my football players have to work full time jobs at 16 to put food on the table for their families. Hard to build a program this way but these kids are having to make a choice between their dreams and their family starving... sad
"They say team A won". Asked him what the front of his jersey said, "team A" he answered... see, you won!
He got a big smile on his face. Too many kids quit sports because of their parents concern over playing time, or position, or other stupid reasons that are the parent
Dear Internet,
I would like for my son to be coached and taught by people who demand more than the minimum and being "good enough" is not allowed or even allowed to be asked. My kids are too young for them to play for Izzo at MSU but I hope to raise kids who want to be coached.
They FINALLY changed the holding rule for HS football!!! No more 1st and 27 because your RT held on a pass play 7 yards deep. It will just go to 1st and 20 like it should be.
allows kids to learn all the things that we need to fix this shit-show our country is in... all the fear, all the hate, all the BS. Only thing that matters is the color of your jersey, not your skin, bank account, religion, or any of the other stupid things that divide us.
Just doing my NFHS courses that are required to coach... 28 players died from heat in football the last 10 years... over 800 died riding bicycles in 2018
But football is killing our kids
ruining the sport for their kid. Guess who always gets the blame? "the coach is an idiot" or "the coach _____" fill in the blank.
Also asked my son, "are you as good a hitter as the 9 guys in the lineup who scored the 14 runs?"
"No" he said.
"Then you need to work harder at
practice and if the coach thinks you are the best option to help the TEAM win, then you take advantage of the opportunity when it comes.
Learning the non-on-field things sports have to offer is far more important than any of the on-field stuff. There are a lot of people asking
the dugout with his head down and we just gave him a high-five, told him "you won! That's awesome!" and had to explain to him that THE TEAM WON... SO YOU WON! Asked him if they say, "team A won, except Creighton because he didn't get in" or if they just say "team A won". He said
why sports are returning... too many times they aren't gonna learn this stuff at home either due to selfish parenting or even just because parents are split, too busy, or not in the kids' life. If all you look at is the on-field stuff... clearly it is "just a game", but that GAME
Dear parents... my job isn't to give your child an A... my job isn't to go so slow your child can be lazy and get a good grade... my job is to push them harder than they ever have been and give them the tools needed to navigate the material. 62% of students in my class have
I'll say it again... if you dont want your kid to play football, then dont let him play football. Why are you trying to remove my child's opportunity to learn it?
Am I really in the VAST majority that thinks sports shouldn't be a year-round thing for ANYONE... ESPECIALLY kids? Lifting, speed, agility development all 12 months, but can't kids be kids and not have to commit to a life-sentence just to be on a jr. High team?
For the love of God, if you don't want your kid to play football... don't. LET MY KID EXPERIENCE EVERYTHING POSITIVE THE GAME PROVIDES AND KEEP OUT OF MY BUSINESS.
Lost 3 2-way starters to other schools already... it's getting out of control. If coaches are as good as they are convincing parents they are, why do you need all the best players from other areas?
We live in a world where we expect a full-grown man to apologize for hitting a ball over the fence against another full-grown man. If you wonder why we have so many issues, just let that one sink in. My kid is 7 and if he gives up 4 on a 3-0 count I'm telling him to pitch better!
A lot of guys out there taking shots at coaches for ideology or exactly how they handle things... I took some shots earlier in the week, but this is what I'm about as a coach. Kid who played for me 7 years ago in a bind... trying to live his dream. Gonna help out. Easy decision.
It is official... I am no longer the HC at Cottonwood. Hope all the kids got something they can use to be more successful the rest of their lives. Not sure what's next, but we'll see where it takes me
Damn... people be going crazy these days. Here are some thoughts 1) "forgiving" student debt is a slap in the face for those of us who sacrificed TONS to pay it back. Am I gonna get a 10k check to pay me back for all the stuff I didn't do with my family so I could get out of it?
First "practice" with a new team last night... taught how to huddle, taught how to behave in a huddle, how to call plays in the huddle, how to break the huddle and get to the LOS, our base formation rt/lt, and the basic snap count. Amazing how 90% of that is foreign to kids now.
Sitting at symposium with a lot of speakers... EVERY SINGLE COLLEGE COACH HAS SAID THAT THE
#1
REASON KIDS GET PASSED ON IS THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA.
They vet every kid & find everything. 75% of the kids they don't recruit because of what either they or parents do on social media!
I'm sitting at a playoff game of 2 teams I have no affiliation with at all. The stupidity that gets yelled by the average person in the stands is baffling. Yelling "that's not your fault, it's the coaches fault" after your qb clearly made a bad read just shows how stupid you are
Down 0-21 at half... 29-21 comeback victory!!! Proud of our kids for not giving up and coming back when historically we would have folded and lost by 50. Hope it starts something awesome moving forward
Lost another former player today... all the Xs and Os and football specific stuff really doesn't matter... kid helped us take an 0-10 team to a title game in 4 years. Losing too many young people. Im supposed to go b4 my guys. RIP my man.
Twitter Coaches... we are at a critical point in our program and I'm working on a vision/mission for our program to try and lean on as we try to move forward. What are the +/- of:
C - haracter
O - rganized
M - eticulous
P - assionate
E - fficient
T - enacious
E - verything
Any bball coaches looking for head job? Ours is open... really need a guy who is willing to share athletes and tell his kids lifting helps bball players.
Letting the other team score on purpose to let them go up by 1 with less than 2 min on the clock isn't as fun to call as the HC as when you watch on TV... but we went down and punched it in with 5 sec left to win. 1st time with 3 wins for this program in almost 10 years.
Anyone in SLC area with dress shirts and ties that they can part with, we are in need for my football players. Handed out 20 shirts/ties today to kids who don't own one so they can wear it on gamedays to school. Having extras will help so they don't wear same one every time.
Love my kids in this program... they frustrate me at times, make tons of mistakes, and right now are not playing good football, but they are looking in the mirror and learning how to be accountable for their actions. We are not there yet, but it is slowly registering with them.
My favorite are the teams that use wristbands and yell "110" and kids check their armbands, then run OZ... 2 plays later "110" and it's OZ again. Next time I hear "110" I'm yelling, "oz" and sending 4 off the edge.
Throw me in football jail I guess
Our 5 seniors have battled an tried to help change the culture at our school this year. Season hasn't gone our way at all, but I gave them all a big hug and thanked them for all they have given us.
Season officially over. Had opportunities to win and we didn't get it done. If things are gonna change with the program it starts TODAY. Can't lose kids to grades, can't have 1/2 attend offseason weights, if we want to say we are a good program, we need to start acting like one.
Final practice is today at 3:30 PM... somehow we made it. It has been a lot of work to space out, and try to minimize the risk, giving our seniors an opportunity to play all 10 games their Sr year. If we win Wed, it will be the 1st time with 4 since 2014. Proud they stuck it out!
@CoachMillerOL
I ran out of gas at 4 years. Not worth the stress on my marriage to spend as many hours as I do trying to help other people's kids, then have my wife roll into games and hear how much the parents don't appreciate/respect the time/effort. Avg tenure around here is under 3 years
maybe... just maybe, someone who majored in chemistry, has taught it for almost 2 decades, and is working with your child for hours each day to teach it to them might know better than you how good your kid is at chemistry. Teachers shouldn't have to put up with 90% of what we do
I've had some people asking, so here it is... I'll be returning to my Alma Mater to be the DC at Cyprus. Gonna reunite with my former coach
@rtgarcia56
and try to help the young men in the community I grew up in. Go Pirates!
We have quite a few kids who do not have access to a shirt and tie to wear to school on game days. If anyone has a few shirts and ties they could part with, please let me know and I'll try to find a way to get them to our school so I can teach some of our kids how to tie a tie
@gbattorney
@Coach_MOrales
They are 1-3... message doesn't change. Self-awareness that you probably aren't the best player going in and not focusing on anything other than getting better and supporting the team win or lose is what matters. Winning is fun, losing isn't, but COMPETING is what it is all about
People are willing to use football as a way to a $500,000 scholarship are the ones complaining about the long term effects. If you want your kid to work at McDonalds for 50,000 hours instead, that's fine. But leave football for those who know it is the last team sport left
Looking for coaches in the Salt Lake City area who want to try and help turnaround a program that has been down for a while... gonna be a lot of work but we're gonna get it flipped eventually.
Starting to get some interest in our program from people trying to get into coaching and even coaches looking for a spot to land if they move to UT. Our place has been a "NO WAY I want to start there" for a long time. We could be at the door of getting it to the other side
Lost another former player today... another great young man lost too soon. Getting tired of outliving kids rather than the other way around. One of the smartest and funniest kids ever! Wanted to be and would have been a great coach too. RIP Hath
Lost tonight but our kids played well and we had a chance. Turned it over 3 times in 3rd qtr. Can't win with that. Got some things to fix, but we'll be back at it
Would anyone else besides me have PAID to not have to go to their own high school graduation? I tried to get out of mine but couldn't... I really don't understand people losing their damn minds over it. Your kid graduated high school... everyone does nowadays... here's your paper
@AldoPinon
There are several people probably dealing with similar decision who may see me going thru it and give them the courage to do what they think is best. Also have a lot of coaches all over the place who keep tabs on my program. Everything I know as a coach I learned from another
received an A or B the entire year. That is actually to high to be statistically valid, but me having to explain to my administration why I shouldn't be fired because your child didn't read the book, do the homework, study, or come get help and wasn't told they are the greatest
2am... leaving school finally. Good win tonight for the kids. Came back down 21-0 at half and won 29-21. Got a chance to win 5th game next week which would give these seniors the best record in over a decade
Worst 24 hours of being the clinic director... the 24 just before it starts. What did I forget? Did I make sure everything is setup and going to run smoothly? Any final landmines to navigate? By 4pm tomorrow it will be the fun part. Should be the best one we've done yet!
Chemist of all time is why so many teachers are quitting the profession. I work my ass off 12+ hours a day trying to get your kid to expand their world view and be more intelligent and knowledgeable than when I got them... 90% of you don't actually care if your kid learns
@ChadKelley50
And learning things that MATTER. The thread was way more trying to get a message to all the parents who think playing time, which position their kid plays, or the "look at my kid" status is what sports are about. He is 6... Team over self is never too young to be learned
@SkrambleWrestle
@gagemcd73
He is having fun... cheering for his team, warming up the outfielders between innings, high fiving his teammates, all the stuff that sports are supposed to be about. Someone has to sit... if it's him, oh well. He should be a little disappointed he didn't play, so keep trying
Caught up with a former player that used football to get himself out of a pretty bad situation in his personal life. He's still in school at Utah Tech and figuring things out for himself. Says he misses the "intense structure we had at football". I'll always root for this kid!
Daughter just hit her first over the fence HR to leadoff the game this morning. Had an inside the park grand slam yesterday, but got her first one over today.
@CoachQ33
@chrisvIQtory
Here is a pic of our presnap shift system... depends on what you are trying to do. If you really want to go from one specific formation to another, build it into the gameplan or you have to give a formation, then say the "shift to" and then the final formation. It's wordy.
When will high school's figure out what "superman" by soulja boy is about and not let all the 14 to 18 year old girls who "love this song" get excited about something as degrading as it is? Every time I have to chaperone a dance I hope my daughter isn't as dumb when she hits HS
run off many of the adults in your child's life actually trying to teach them that an A- or B+ is very good, but there is still some room for improvement to be REALLY good at something. I am not the best teacher in the world, but I know that and am always trying to get better.
anything, you just want them to be given an A without having demonstrated that they are actually mastering anything. The amount of mental stress the kids have because of their parents brainwashing them that not hitting a 4.0 means you are not good enough is staggering. Then you
@CoachFore
That dude is absolutely crazy... i got kids who don't eat without us... dont go to school without us... don't get good grades without us... you know how much more fun I'd have with my wife without football... LOTS. It ain't about us as coaches. Kids need grown ups in their lives
News report in my state... 1 in 17 kids in the state attempted suicide last year. It isn't CTE or football... it is our society. If life gets hard, we give up and blame it on things we can't control.
I'll be at work today... I'll be at work tomorrow. Fear won't dictate my life. I wont let my children see fear dictate my life. Doing the same for every kid who sees me show to work and be what appears to be one of the few who think the apocalypse isn't here yet.
Amazed I still run into HS kids and parents who think lifting won't help, when my daughter's pitching coach has her lifting basic weights at age 12 saying they better love lifting as much as playing if they want to be good.
If you live within a state from UT, consider coming to the 2024
@UtahFBCA
Annual Clinic March 8th-9th. Gonna have coaches from HS and College all the way from FL to CA talking just about everything football related over a day and a half. Looks like it will be a another good one!
Watching a state semifinal game and there can't be more than 2000 people here... couldn't these games be held at a smaller venue for far cheaper? If I was a player I'd rather play at a packed HS stadium than a 95% empty college stadium.
Coaching situation in UT is less sustainable than the NIL and Portal for college. Wild out here. 30% of all jobs open including 2 that filled and then opened again less than a week later...
Good luck to all my college coaching buddies with their jobs on the line based on the decisions of 17-18 yo kids.
Also good luck to the kids, choosing the school that is the best fit for them and they go to a program where they can use football as a tool to get an education.
Shared story of my former player who got addicted to pain meds and eventually died of an OD after years of struggling with it. Gave 2 of our players a pair of socks that are custom made by my former players father as a reward for their play in our scrimmage. Barely made it thru
Super-Excited about all the positivity in our program right now. Kids starting to actually believe that they can compete. Still a long way to go, but we are making progress. Another chance to compete tomorrow.
Sorry, if you look for a definition of a hold, the jersey stretching on a double-move is gonna be the textbook clip. Sucks, but the guy having the ball thrown to him gets grabbed... easy call. Good game, and little things matter
Just dropped
@CoachHuey
off at the airport after a 2 day clinic. It was great meeting him and being able to talk ball with the current TX state champion OC from Rockdale, TX. Coaches if you aren't on his site you are missing Out!
The man that gave me an opportunity to move a thousand miles from home and get the chance to play college football just won his 300th game as a HC. Amazing accomplishment and he deserves it. Spent his entire life helping a community and building a program from the ground-up
All the 9th/10th graders in the Salt Lake Valley who were just cut from their team... come to Cottonwood and you can play sophomore football this year, varsity next year. We have spots for you to PLAY immediately.
All the "why we bringing sports back" people need to understand that it's not the sport itself, but it allows for relationships between kids and men who can look out for them... just got done taking 2 kids home and I "had to run in and get a few things" with them...
Coaches in UT... I just sent an email about a job opening to all HCs with their info on our coached association list. Please distribute to assistants or others who may be interested. Keep me updated with changes and jobs and I'll keep getting info out to everyone.
#UFCA
Any coaches out there have videos of their kids getting after it in the weightroom? Our kids don't seem to understand the intensity in which the weightroom should have... usually I'd take them to go watch a GREAT team workout, but can't with covid
Clinic Lineup is almost complete for the
#2019cwoodclinic
. Some guys are still coaching games the next 2 weeks, but we are almost finalized. Please spread the word to any coaches in the UT, NV, ID, CO area. Have another great lineup coming to SLC!!!
My 9yo in the car... "you need to do lots of squats if you want to be a good basketball player. It makes your legs way stronger so you can jump higher, shoot from farther out, rebound, and play defense"
Somehow he understands, but so many bball teams/coaches/players don't do it
Since it's out now... I'll put my $.02 in, then we will start moving forward.
Be careful what you ask for... When you are a program with 97 years of history with a winning percentage at 40% and only one team in those 97 years winning 10 in a season, you are NOT a destination for
the love, not the fact that you didn't go to a fancy place. Stop with the "what can I get ME" and start with the "what can I DO for OTHERS"
Can't do anything for others if you have to have a bunch of fancy things yourself. Self-sacrifice has always been the key... always will
