Mostly beating my head against terraform and wondering at the many ways cloud tools can be misused. Knowing how to cloud properly is indeed a crazy valuable skill.

20 years ago a colleague, after hearing suggestion that we get slower computers to encourage more efficient code, opined that we’d probably write more efficient code if we also put sharp pins on all of the keys on our keyboards.

The fun parts were always like this for me. The necessary parts were often towards "nurturing in to being." But hunting? Wat.
Some of the best software people I know are lit majors, film majors, dropouts, etc., and that very much includes incredibly talented machine learning folk. Ability to learn and think creatively is far more important than academic pedigree.

Kickoff is a far far better thing than the superbowl, the Kentucky Derby, and the lower Oakland roller derby finals all rolled into one.

Today's the day!
Sometimes I try to do things
And it just doesn't work out the way I want it to
And I get real frustrated, and like I try hard to do it
And I take my time, but it just doesn't work out the way I want it to
(an ode to Confluent's python kafka library.)
We decamped to the in-laws' place today to escape Monrovia's 350 AQI. Thinking about all of my norcal, Oregon and Washington people today. Stay safe out there.
I literally cannot wait to get vax carded in LA. More importantly, I cannot wait for the level of comfort I will feel in an indoor place after watching someone get turned away for not having one.
First annual SoCal coaches league: roaring success. What a fun day hanging out with folks who also plan on spending the next eight months teaching kids about engineering. Next year's game: Ring-It-Up! again.
Came home to find the boy lounging in the living room reading Randall Munroe's new book, drinking tea and listening to a Coltrane LP. Is it OK to be proud of your child for their ability to Saturday quite so well?
I strongly encourage all game developers to take steps to archive their development environment so you are confident you can rebuild things years in the future, which does not automatically happen!
Upgraded to U20.04. Wifi worked perfectly. nVidia drivers, with new hardware, work perfectly. No audio, whether it's line out or bluetooth. Linux, never change.
Holy crap, they made it again! Send the Suit Bots to Spokane so they can find another Washington state pool hall to call home for a weekend. (While they're not competing, obvs.)
Fletcher made the turkey this year. I don't think my turkeys were slouchy, but man oh man was his great. Smoked, as the great magnet intended, and with a really great rub of his own devising. Happy Thanksgiving, folks.
In some circles, FTC kickoff is a far greater thing than the Kentucky Derby, the Super Bowl and the Lower Oakland Roller Derby Final all rolled in to one. Get psyched for tomorrow morning, folks.

Sometimes just hearing "that seems difficult, you should look for a more simple solution" is the most helpful thing, even when deep down you already knew it.
I got 10 teenagers through estimation -- size *and* importance -- of 15 stories in 90 minutes this afternoon. There were many good points made and much learning occurred. Totally hiring these kids when they're done with school.
I used to wonder why there weren't more middle aged programmers weighing in on heated topics.
I used to take it as lack of passion.
Now I get it.
The energy you waste on that crap is gone forever. You'll never get it back.
