I wrote a short article about Francesco Fantin, Italian migrant anarchism & antifascism in Australia. Fantin worked in textile factories in Italy & Geelong + cut sugarcane in North Queensland. He was murdered in an Australian internment camp during WWII.

When Malatesta returned to Italy during the Biennio Rosso, he was greeted at the docks by massive crowds with red flags. The radical press heralded him the "Lenin of Italy." By the time Lenin died, Malatesta wrote in Umanità Nova: “Lenin is dead, long live Liberty!”

Three years ago there was barely an organised anarchist presence to speak of in Australia and now there's a network across most east coast cities + presence in many movements & unions, & international orgs are referencing Oz theory.

Very much enjoying the Paul Mattick biography I am reading at the moment. This anecdote reminds me of when Italian anarchists sparked armed occupations of the ports in the lead up to the Biennio Rosso, refusing to load arms being sent to fight the Bolsheviks.
