Ages ago I was putting together a list of recommended films for my TY class. I never got around to typing the list up so I'm putting it together on a thread. All fiction, no documentaries (I haven't seen enough of them). And I'm aware of the lack of diversity. I'm working on that

Leaving Cert students are doing their orals today and tomorrow. At the weekend. On a Saturday. On a Sunday. They're doing a Leaving Cert exam on a Sunday. I don't care how this came about but, to me, this is just mean. An awful way to treat students.

Every teacher I have spoken is happy to go back in July. Every single one. Remember this when (as is already happening) talk show hosts try to suggest otherwise. I'm not naive enough to think all teachers agree, just none I've spoken to, and we all knew this might happen.

One of the nicest things the students do is say 'thank you' at the end of class. They do this even if they haven't said a word in class, some, that have broken/no mic, put it into chats. Simple but means a lot.

Some simple truths: Teachers can be tired. That doesn't mean that other professionals can't be tired. It's not a competition. You are allowed to highlight problems in schools. That doesn't mean that you want schools to close, it just means you want things to be transparent.

Teachers looked for plans B+C in Sep, guidelines on how to work online/blend/live stream classes etc. We could have had training. On Jan 11th we could have been in able to welcome some students and work with others online. We were told told to stop whingeing and get back to work.

If schools open with a blended learning approach we need: 1. Broadband in all homes. Free. 2. Laptops for all students (individual students, not families). 3. Social workers to visit homes of vulnerable students. And keep visiting those homes.

Teachers' salaries are all over the radio today. To be clear: Almost no teacher gets full hours, most will be lucky to get half hours. This will last for at least the first five years of their career. @NormaFoleyTD1 gave the figure of €40,000 on @cooper_m Half that number.

As it's in the news: 2nd level teachers are often offered less than half hours. This means they have to find other work to pay for the privilege of being a teacher. You have to reinterview after your 1st year teaching for the same job you just did. 1/2

Attention second level students!! If this pandemic has taught us anything it's that you should give your teachers gifts BEFORE you get to 6th year. Butter them up NOW, that way you can't be accused of bribery!

If schools had closed after Christmas they only would have been closed for a week or two. All students would then have been taught online. Although this wouldn't have been perfect it would have meant that less students would have missed out.

The racism on show here isn't subtle, it isn't hiding behind "concern" for those seeking refuge. This is pure undiluted racism. That councillor, and those white men behind him, bring nothing but shame on our country.

A thread on teaching. The classroom and the virtual room are two completely different places. It's very difficult to teach the nuances of your subject, the specific needs of every single student in your class, the patient teasing out of the topic, reading the room to pause.

4. Spaces where students can work in peace at home. 5. Good tech for teachers (camera, mic, editing software). 6. Chocolate and coffee delivered to teachers on the hour, every hour, until 6 o'clock in the evening.

Also, we just came out of covid, the students had numerous lockdowns. Answer on three poems? This is a dirty, dirty, trick to play on 15 year olds.

I've been teaching English for over 20 years and two things continue to bug me: 1. Film is seen as entertainment, a 'break' from real study, and not as an art form. 2. Books are 'good for you' (like broccoli) and not seen as being good entertainment.

Had a "significant" birthday this week and the whole school knew about it. Cake and chocolate with a couple of classes, constant happy birthday from students, a little party with a few colleagues at break time. And then a past pupil brings me a "thank you" gift. Great week!

Very pleased to get my blog from a couple of weeks ago published in today's @IrishTimes thanks to @carlobrien We need to nurture student voice, not stifle it. Moving Paper One is a retrograde step.

I rewrote one of your paragraphs for you: 'The DES and the HSE reviewed the data and concluded that, as those involved were teachers, Education's special immunity from Covid came into play and everyone could continue working.'

The Department of Education says this evening that a full public health risk assessment carried out at the school concluded that the teachers in question were not close contacts, despite what the COVID tracker app has told them initially.

Just want to reiterate that, despite what most of twitter is saying, it's ok to do "well" in your Leaving Cert.
