Shohei Ohtani is a generational, once in a lifetime talent. Instead of celebrating and appreciating what his abilities can bring to the sport, the industry chooses to criticize The same day he tossed 7 innings with an RBI double, an MLB Central host is saying he shouldn’t pitch

My thoughts: -the production and value he brings to a team doing both is too great to limit him -the game is evolving; he’s not going to be the last 2-way star -there are technologies in place (Pulse/Whoop/Oura) that can accurately track and monitor workload/stress

“Spin rate is about potential”-Charlie Morton Spin rate gives you the potential for spin-induced movement. The more spin you can impart on the baseball, the higher ceiling for movement. Reaching that ceiling requires high spin efficiency and true spin (esp for FBs)

Looking the part matters. For pitchers making their MLB debuts in the last five years, they averaged 213lbs and 70% of them were > 200lbs. If you’re weighing in at 170 and struggling to throw up big numbers on the gun, this is likely a good place to start.

Number of player averaging 95mph (or harder) per team since 2008 On a league wide scale there are obviously more 95mph pitchers today than over a decade ago. Almost every team increased, but most weren’t a linear increase. Some of the team trends were pretty interesting⬇️

Visual learners: if you’re having trouble conceptualizing spin axis and spin direction, try implementing them on some old baseballs. It helps by being able to actually visualize back/top/side/gyroscopic spin and how they are directly altered with different releases and grips.

Curveball Grips: Traditional vs. Spiked Adding a spike has completely changed the profile of my CB. It has allowed me to naturally predispose my fingers/wrist at release to getting a more efficient (-gyro) / more true spin pitch, which increases break. Here’s summer ‘19 vs ‘20.
