I promise you, most of the sacrifices we make as coaches are unseen. I have coach friends who haven’t seen their immediate family members since Jul/Aug. We miss precious moments like fishing! Spend more time w/our team than our actual family. It’s a gift and a curse.

Last year, instead of canceling our program due to a last minute coaching change, I became interim, stuck it through w/7 players (1 soccer player & 2 softball players) & we focused on building the foundation & culture. This year, we have a full staff & about 12 players.

I truly believe that Confidence can elevate a player’s game in more ways than any physical skills training ever would... we preach that the game is 80% mental but don’t train mentally... #MentalSkillsTraining is key! Positive self talk is also key! Develop confident players!

We’re playing with 7 players, we were down 20 and cut it down to 3 with 2 min to go! We ended up losing but I’m so proud and everyone in that gym gave us our flowers for not giving up. Celebrating the small victories.

You know what’s crazy to me… when I was LOOKING for a coaching job (assistant or head coach) I applied to 82 openings and the job I ended up getting, I didn’t even apply for at first… I was recommended.

I remember my coaching friends being lifesavers & allowing me to crash in their school sponsored hotel rooms that had an extra bed b/c my school wouldn’t pay anything. I personally know coaches that have to pay out of pocket for expenses to attend the 2023 @WBCA1981 Conference.

Over the years, I’ve learned that job security is more important than a job title. I busted my butt to have a Head Coach title by the age of 30… I accomplished it but at the expense of so much. Don’t be so caught up in titles… aim for purpose & keep family first. Always.

I truly believe that, in regards to JuCo, players don’t think the JuCo route is a worthwhile or dignified choice. It’s stigmatized as the β€œLast Chance U.” When really, under the right coach, it’s an opportunity to develop & get 4yr college offers you hadn’t gotten in HS.

Biggest lesson I learned as a head coach: You don’t have to like someone to respect them. Often times your players won’t like you but they should respect you... and respect is earned, not given.

I truly believe that certain coaches bring out the best out of certain players. Recruits, do your homework, watch coaches during a game.. it’s important to ask coaching philosophy questions during recruiting trips. You’re recruiting them as much as they are you!
