Just got home from a hoop game and said, “Hi, Lincoln.” He replied from under a blanket on the couch, “Hi, Dadda.” He’ll be 7 years old in two weeks and that’s the first time he’s ever done that. He won’t give up. He works at it every day. He’s as tough as they come.

My guy Lincoln starts first grade today. It’s been exactly six months since he’s been in school, and he simply won’t wear a mask, so I’m nervous. But, time and again, the compassion society has shown him has given him a chance to fit in. Fingers crossed he has a great first day.

Unprovoked, Lincoln looked out the window today and said “snow.” A good friend who was consoling me shortly after Lincoln’s diagnosis in 2017 said “you’ll celebrate things the rest of us take for granted.” He’s right. Today I smiled about “snow”...even as I shoveled it.

I feel for all HS football coaches, but particularly Hath and Soehren (and maybe others?), who have sons who would have been seniors this year. My senior year with my dad on the sideline is a top three athletic season for me. And we went 3-5. Can’t replace those Friday nights.

My father in law passed away last week. As I was standing with my brother in law at the wake tonight, his high school football coach came walking in. He played for him 23 years ago. Pretty moving to witness and a great reminder: coaches matter.

Today is Autism Awareness Day. Lincoln was diagnosed with autism in January of 2017, just before his 3rd birthday. He is a tough, smart, gritty little boy who happens to like to sing a little Frozen at his grandparents house. People accept him and love him everywhere he goes.

A year and a half ago, he had zero interactions with his brother. I had two sons that lived like they were an only child. Now, Lincoln will grab Case and wrestle with him. It’s a beautiful thing.

For the first time in his 6.5 years, Lincoln asked for something without prompting. We’ve been going on rides every day during quarantine just to break up the day. Yesterday at 11AM he came up to me unannounced and said, “Go for ride?” Greatest 3 word phrase I’ve ever heard.

The world lost one of its’ brightest lights when my sister passed away Sunday in Los Angeles. She went to bed and never woke up. She was 44. We are devastated beyond words and can’t make sense of this tragedy. She was brilliant, hilarious and loved everyone she met. XOXO, Lissa

Cool moment at the Lobster Bowl: ran into Brett Colburn, a player for the West while we were bowling. He played at Leavitt & came to camp for 4 years. First thing out of his mouth was, “Hey Coach Lip…how’s your son doing?” He knows Lincoln’s story and genuinely cared to know.

Crazy atmosphere at the ACC tonight. I saw players from dozens of schools, some from as far away as Oxford Hills and Bangor. The Cooper Flagg Effect in full force. Basketball was back tonight and it was awesome. Cony played their asses off, as they always do. Just too much #32 .

7 on 7 is a summer activity. We like it in July. We like it because it means real football is on the horizon. We like it because it allows us to see some skill kids who have put in work over the offseason. We don’t like it as a replacement for tackle football.
