Deontay Wilder has gone from the most feared puncher on the planet to a useless, never fought anyone, overhyped boxer on here after just one defeat to an elite opponent. No wonder fighters want to protect their 0s and take easy pay days. Oh, Twitter.
Amir Khan may have his critics but yet again last night he fronted up at the press conference when many others would have understandably slipped out the side door. Same for every one of his defeats. Always there happy to speak to the media. A legend of British boxing
Rocky Fielding lost to Callum Smith in devastating fashion. Few days later his mum told him she had cancer. For his comeback fight he juggled taking her to hospital with training sessions. She fought back and now he has done that in the ring. Brilliant.
Vasyl Lomachenko is in a different sport to all. Leagues above. Every second you get to watch him you're seeing an all-time great in action. People talk about football fans lucky to be living in the Messi and Ronaldo era. Boxing fans now should be grateful Lomachenko is here now.
Usyk. Four world titles at cruiser. Won in Poland, Germany, Latvia and Russia. Wins three world heavyweight titles in England. All against hometown opposition. Wins a rematch while his country is at war. Agrees to 30 per cent of a pot when he deserves more for undisputed. Respect
Before we get silly tonight...
World amateur silver
Olympic gold
World heavyweight champion twice
Stadiums sold out
Anthony Joshua can still hold his head high
The arbitrator in the Fury and Wilder case has ruled for a third fight between the pair. Meaning the Joshua fight is in serious doubt for this summer. Unsure if there is a further resolution to this as legal teams still in discussions.
Katie Taylor is everything Jake Paul is not. Quiet, humble and, most importantly in a boxing context, talented. She is the reason women's boxing is headlining Madison Square Garden so it has been crass to see a YouTuber latch on and act like he's doing it a favour. Column:
The boxing started earlier last night and the fight delivered. The result? More eyeballs on it, more chat today and more mainstream coverage. It is almost like not starting a main event at nearly midnight is a good idea.
Derek Chisora can decide his own future. It is his decision what he does next. But stakeholders in boxing have a responsibility to look after fighters and touting him to face Deontay Wilder at 38 is wrong. Especially after his last performance.
Chris Eubank Jr has played the panto villain so well over the years but tonight giving out free merchandise to fans for hours at a boxing club showed his class
So now Fury v Usyk for the undisputed title has a massive roadblock because the IBF have ordered a fight nobody wants to see. Cue weeks of step aside offers, purse bids and general shithousery now. A sport that brings this nonsense on itself.
Not really great to hear Johnny Nelson saying Kell Brook should just come in overweight if he's struggling to make 149lb. It's an agreed, contracted weight and irresponsible if a fighter deliberately misses it.
Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr targeting October 8 date at the O2 in London. Parties closing in on deal. Would be just a day shy of 29 years since their fathers fought if it all gets signed off
Dillian Whyte has been made the mandatory challenger for Tyson Fury's WBC heavyweight title. They now must begin negotiations for the fight. Understand some discussions already and looking at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff or Manchester Arena early next year.
Yes it's a civil case, it's hardly going to be a criminal case over a contract for a boxing match. It still means Wilder situation has to be resolved so either a third fight or a substantial pay off. Simples.
Liam Smith heads out to Las Vegas this weekend for clash with Jaime Munguia. Will be first Scouser to ever headline in Vegas as he bids to become two-time world champion.
Imagine thinking David Haye against the fella he was on holiday with in Mykonos a few weeks ago is anything other than just a stupid cash grab to take money from idiots
James DeGale also got a lot of love from Irish boxing fans when he revealed before the Andre Dirrell fight why he wore 'DS' on his shorts. He wanted the late Darren Sutherland - who he beat in 2008 Olympics - with him on his journey to a world title. It was a brilliant tribute.
Still get the feeling those outside of boxing circles are sleeping on Joshua v Usyk and feel because "it's not Fury" that this is some stop gap opponent. This is such a big fight. Joshua could win with an explosive stoppage but if he does it will be seriously impressive...
George Groves has retired from boxing. Top amateur. World champion in pros. Huge fights with DeGale, Froch and Eubank Jnr. Adds a prayer in his retirement statement for Eduard Gutknecht which tells you all you need to know about the man.
Canelo Alvarez solved the issue of dealing with rubbish mandatories. Fight more often. It's quite simple. 70 days after beating Callum Smith, he gets WBC mando Yildirim out of the way, keeps belt and still has big May fight. Should be the norm.
Column:
It's a bit mad but I've just agreed with Conor McGregor on something. Boxing main events start way too late. All week we get told what an inspiration Taylor is to young people - which she is - then the main event starts at 10.30pm. Get it on earlier. Every week it is same.
It doesn't look like a big shot, but boy it looks like it feels like one. Deontay Wilder is electric. Him v any of the top heavyweights is huge. I'd watch Fury v Wilder 4.
Dillian Whyte will get his world title chance if be beats Otto Wallin. The WBC will give the winner of this weekend's fight 30 days to negotiate the undisputed fight but Usyk is contracted to a Joshua rematch. The WBC will then order the winner to face the interim champion.
Wonder what it would take for Robert McCracken to win coach of the year at the usual end of the year awards? Will be all Gareth Southgate but he has led a team to six Olympic medals and if Anthony Joshua beats Oleksandr Usyk then that is an incredible year
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and if you don't want to watch boxing because it is too dangerous or violent then fair enough. I've said before I don't think the sport will exist in its current form in around 50-100 years which will be a shame...
I hope Rendall Munroe is sat somewhere telling people 'See that Kiko Martinez who just became a world champion again, I was the first man to ever beat him. And I did it twice'.
Hearing Callum Smith could make first defence of WBA super-middleweight title on Anthony Joshua v Jarrell Miller undercard in New York on June 1. Would make sense to help make his name grow in US and also help the UK pay-per-view. Decision in next 48 hours or so.
A red card in a pre-season friendly and deservedly so. Joris Gnagnon kicks Yasser Larouci for a bad tackle in any game never mind a pre-season friendly. Liverpool players and bench fuming. Larouci still down and needs a stretcher to take him off. Looks bad.
Oh sorry. The Olympic bronze medallist who reigned as WBC champion for five years fought nobody, can't box and should now be cast as a bum cherry picker and never allowed another shot. Thanks, Twitter.
Just watched Joshua v Usyk back. A lot of talk about what Joshua did wrong but it was more about how brilliant Usyk was. That seventh round was huge from him as killed any momentum Joshua was building. Scored it 117-111.
Conor Benn v Chris Eubank Jr set for October 8 at the O2 in London. The final details are being sorted and announcement expected soon after Eubank signed contract. Will happen a day shy of the 29th anniversary of fathers' rematch. Story from last month
Dillian Whyte couldn't stand up, he fell forwards when asked to walk. It doesn't matter if there was one second or two minutes to go in the round, it would have been wrong to even consider letting him go on. A fighter will always want to fight on. Up to others to protect them.
WBA are a disgrace but we already knew that. Jarrell Miller fails three different tests for EPO, Endurobol and human growth hormone and gets a pathetic six month ban. Six years would have been lenient
Interview with Lucas Digne on Roberto Carlos setting the template for modern day full-backs, training with Lionel Messi and advice from Leighton Baines.
That's what happens when you put an elite fighter in with a total novice. No need to see these bouts. Never was, should not see them again. Joshua did what Fury should have done. Ngannou can box if he wants but start at the bottom and learn.
Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia close to a deal for April 20 clash after negotiations restarted late last month. Could be announced in next week if final details sorted.
Sad news but Ryan Burnett has had to announce his retirement from boxing early because of injuries. He walks away a former IBF and WBA bantamweight champion with a 20-1 record at 27. A fine servant to Irish boxing.
Ron Lewis was a great mate, a fantastic travel companion on many boxing trips and an absolute gentleman. Loved all sports but few knew boxing better than him. He loved his family more than anything. I'll miss him.
Tyson Fury has no mandatories due with the WBC so they plan to give him time to consider future. They will contact him in the coming weeks to discuss if he plans to continue fighting or relinquish the title.
How many away fighters could beat all the best British heavyweights and still come out to a stadium in London and get cheered. Some reception for Oleksandr Usyk
Mark Lyson has been appointed referee for Tyson Fury v Dillian Whyte on April 23. No UK judges as requested. Guido Cavalleri (Italy), Robert Tapper (Canada) and Juan Carlos Pelayo (Mexico).
So as we are still going on about the size of a ring, there seems to be people out there thinking that a 20ft ring is tiny. So here's Wilder v Fury - in their first fight - in a 20ft ring.
Dan Azeez. Southern Area, English, British, Commonwealth and now European champion. Stick your intercontinentals and internationals in the bin. Doing it the proper way. Tough division at the top. Good luck to him.
Anthony Joshua fight week so your usual reminder for people who say 'what has he achieved?'
World amateur silver
Olympic gold
WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight champion x 2
Best of this era? Probably not. A huge success? Without a doubt.
Fury v Usyk is set to be broadcast on three channels in the UK. Understand Sky Sports, TNT Sports and DAZN close to agreeing a deal. Will be PPV on all platforms.
Ben Whittaker set to sign pro deal with Boxxer and Sky Sports. Seven-figure deal. Big signing of one of the most sought-after stars from Tokyo 2020. He's managed by Anthony Joshua's 258 group.
Dillian Whyte signed his contract to face Tyson Fury late last night and contracts were lodged right before the deadline but understand there is still a signficant issue to overcome which the WBC needs to sort out. It is not over the line yet.
Board statement:
"On the evening of 4th October 2022, the Board of the British Boxing Board of
Control Limited resolved that the contest between Chris Eubank Jnr. and Conor
Benn scheduled to take place on 8th October 2022 is prohibited as it is not in the
interests of Boxing."
Got well beaten this day but could have been a lot worse if I didn't make 33kg and had to go in the weight above. Wonder what happened to those two lads...
Dillian Whyte has until Monday to sign for the Tyson Fury fight. Not an extension, just some confusion I think. As of last night, there was still no signature but communication still open.
One thing that needs to be pointed out... Dillian Whyte is not the WBC mandatory challenger. He is the interim champion. No mandatory has been called yet. The WBC will call for the interim champion to face the full champion but they haven't yet.
Bubble life update. Came out of my room and was met by Dmitry Bivol shadow boxing in the hall. Now having dinner while Derek Chisora wanders around the restaurant in a bathrobe.
Liverpool are still top of the league and the title race is still in their hands. Chelsea are 11th and have lost more games than they've won after 23 games. Bizarre statement.
Darwin Nunez is a doubt for Liverpool against Arsenal. Has a swollen foot from a challenge against Chelsea. Scan clear for any break but still seriously swollen and can’t currently get it in a boot.
