Whenever I hear about a pedestrian that got killed in Austin, I open a map and look at the intersection. Almost without fail, there is a pedestrian crossing through a slip lane. We should not be encouraging drivers to make these turns at high speeds. It kills people.

I had one interaction with UVA police. One. We found a friend unresponsive after drinking too much alcohol and called 911 to get him to the hospital. We were scared, wondering if he'd even be okay. A cop came and tried to arrest him while he was in urgent need of medical care.

The intersection of Powell and I-35 - like most intersections with I-35 - has a large curb radius (red). This has two effects: 1. It allows cars to turn without slowing. 2. It forces pedestrian crossing to be longer - in this case, 75% longer. Both are very dangerous for 🚶.
