I live without a car and it is amazing. No car payment. No gas. No car insurance. No surprise mechanic bills. I only have 3 real expenses: rent, groceries, and health insurance.

@PeligrosoFitz @QAGreenways Unfortunately a lot of people don't even realize there's an alternative. And there are so few places in the U.S. that you can reasonably - and safely - live without a car. Those that exist are generally in cities with housing crises that price out many people.

The average cost of owning a car is $806 per month. When we build our cities for cars, we impose this cost on everyone living there.

The average new car payment for Americans is now higher than ever before, rising to a whopping $717 a monthβ€”over 50% of the median U.S. rent. This comes as U.S. automakers report $32 billion in profits through the 3rd quarter of 2022, their highest profit level since 2016.

@actoker @QAGreenways The inner city of Austin is walkable and fairly bike-friendly, but it's still dominated by cars and has significant safety issues for cyclists. And with the housing affordability crisis as bad as it is, many people who most need access to that transportation are priced out of it

@dreamerintexas Exactly. The way most cities are built, you can't choose not to have a car - they're all-but-required to get around. And - by not forcing people like me to have a car - it means one less car in traffic to slow down people who *do* want to drive!

By requiring first-years to live on-grounds and failing to provide a solid amount of parking, UVA creates a social norm where you essentially have to live close to grounds. This ends up creating a low-supply, high-demand housing market that disadvantages low-income students.
