Author of Scaling People. Work
@stripe
. Board member, mom, wife and busy friend. Never enough time to read all on my list. Pretend to garden. Roughly that!
Still can't quite believe this is happening. And it's thanks to the many people I have worked with and learned from, more than any of you know. And the folks I interviewed and excerpted who generously shared wisdom. This book was not a 1 person project - thank you is not enough.
Scaling People: Tactics for Management and Company Building by
@chughesjohnson
is a practical guide to building a company’s operating systems and scaling the most important resource a company has: its people.
Available for preorder now: 📈
Excited to finally share Scaling People with all of you. This book is a distillation of 20+ years of experience at both Google and Stripe — plus collected wisdom of the folks I interviewed and excerpted and the many more who joined me in years of building:

Thanks
@tferriss
. Didn't predict this in my life path nor did I predict how much you and I would talk about literature and...John Wick 😁. Thank you for your tremendous energy, curiosity and the wide ranging *fun* of our conversation.
NEW podcast episode is up!

Please enjoy! 🙌
California has defeated me. With no irony, I started the day with a kombucha drink and apple cider vinegar pill. Just now, I went to Barry's Bootcamp and then bought some kind of wellness juice. What the hell?! At least I ate a bagel and read the NY Times. Still, unrecognizable.
Wow. Just learning this now. Thank you to everyone who has supported the book thus far and to the amazing team who helped make it happen and all the phenomenal contributors. 🤗
Big week for me. What with
@HarryStebbings
and the 20VC team making me viral on a platform I'm not even on 🙏 and then this from a platform I never thought I'd be on, thanks

The secret to success in content:
Repackaging.
This discussion with
@chughesjohnson
was recorded on Thursday.
Team 20VC got the recording, made 18 short clips in less than a day.
2 broke 300,000 views each within a day.
Repackaging content is key to success in media.
Wish there was a manual for running a company?
@chughesjohnson
(long-time COO of Stripe) just wrote one, and it's incredible.
It's called "Scaling People", and it's coming out Tuesday. You should get it.
I sat down with Claire to dig into her new book.
Here's a peek:
I once asked my grandmother, born in 1910 and alive until 2010, if she voted. She said "Oh yes, honey." I asked how she decided which candidate got her vote. She said, "I asked your grandfather."...Beat.... "And then I voted for the other candidate." I think about this a lot.
My kids are signed up for Saturday. They watched us have some side effects and I thought they'd hesitate. Nope. Both wanted the earliest appt. If you think your kids aren't feeling every step of this thing, you're wrong.
ex-Google VP = … me 🙃 — grateful to
@uhoelze
and his Personal User Manual for this management tip and to
@eladgil
for sharing "Working with Claire" with such a wide audience (catnip, indeed!). Thanks
@Oriannarosa
for capturing the spirit and the benefit of such guides.
Very excited to join
@aurora_inno
's board!
@chris_urmson
is an autonomous vehicle visionary and he's assembled an amazing team to achieve what I know will be our future reality.
She knows how to build businesses that scale and work in industries challenging the status quo. Please join us in welcoming our newest Board member, Stripe executive

My father never talked about his service. He only said he would never wait in another line for the rest of his life. And we relied on him as our human compass. And for a lot more than that.
#VeteransDay
Tfw you misread the high school application parent essay as word count and it was *character* count. Editing, editing! That said, I am relieved that no one wants to read 3000 words about my child. I mean she's great, but...
Thinking about
#TonyHsieh
constantly. When I worked on AdWords, Zappos was a top advertiser and I once met with Tony. He was kind, patient and passionate about Delivering Happiness. Even sent me the graphic novel version. Did I properly thank you, Tony? Thank you and so much more
Today, I'm thrilled to welcome Claire Hughes Johnson to our board. Claire has tremendous expertise leading high-growth organizations from her time at Stripe & Google. Welcome,
@chughesjohnson
, can't wait to continue learning from you!
Hermit crabs are the *worst* pets. First Waffles died and Hermie ate him, and now Hermie is dead. Neither did anything much except pinch people and hide in the coconut hut. My son's comment upon the death of Hermie: "To be honest, Waffles was my favorite."
I first met Diane when she was a Google board member, offering time and advice to those of us working our way up the proverbial ladder. Thrilled she is now on Stripe's board:
They're now joined by Diane Greene.
@bhorowitz
famously summed her up as a "god level CEO". As founder of VMWare, she helped usher in the cloud revolution, which she then returned to as CEO of Google Cloud.
There's not enough discussion of the milestone when your kids grow taller than you. It doesn't effect everyone (just wait until you shrink in old age!), but it happened to me >a year ago and I still think about it. Perhaps because my son often walks up and lifts me into the air.
the human has been working from home the last couple days. and every so often. they let me participate in the video calls. all the other humans cheer when they see me. i am the only thing holding their company together
18k feels like a lot to me! I will say this: I don't like watching videos of myself, but this one (despite my wrinkled blouse!) does contain a few hard fought lessons and some kernels of
@stripe
that matter. Thanks
@jaltma
for bringing those "elemental things" to the fore.
this interview
@jaltma
did with
@chughesjohnson
is so good; I don't understand how it only has 18k views. I just watched it again after originally watching it 2 years ago and it was just as compelling a second time. Highly recommend.
Quarantine happenings:
1) Husband communicates via Discord with our son who is...in the next room. And it's far more effective.
3) Husband insists it's a govt mandate that we rewatch all original Star Wars movies on "May the fourth". That 5/4 is a Monday seems trivial to him 🤔
"Just do your job" does not mean your *specific* job, but the job that helps your team win. For non-sports friends, this is the team's kicker running down a 3 time All-American, 2 time Pro Bowl star running back. Thank you
@adamvinatieri
for playing to win (esp. for the

Thank you and happy Valentine's to our People and Design teams who organized a "we give you cool stuff and you make your own Valentine" shindig today.
My daughter: "Thanks. So it's like Kindergarten for grown ups?"
Yes, yes that's exactly what we do at Stripe.
Not sure about the mentor thing but happy to share the work of many great folks who have helped me hone my (in)famous offsites...(note: these are not the 'go bowling' type of off-site). Even better, it's easy to share and super scalable with
@coda_hq
. Thanks Coda!
Family member emailed to share a new Gmail address because previous was "overly compromised". Afaik was not due to security breach but because too many people were emailing her. Honored to get the new address. Also, can I too declare my identity and email overly compromised? 🤔
Thanks
@HarryStebbings
and
@saastr
for inviting me to discuss scaling and leadership hiring (do you really need a COO?!). Protip: be ready for Harry's quickfire questions. If you listen to the end, you get 2 of the biggest lessons I've learned.
Next month is our 14th anniversary and in celebration my husband put on a headlamp and got inside the wall behind our TV to fix it. That, folks, is true love.
@tommycollison
Yes, in that moment when I selected and installed a complex closet system by myself in an apartment where I could actually afford the rent. No, in that I proceeded to make disastrous romantic choices until around age 30. Summary: I could wield tools but I still fell for tools.
Great teams are not top talent individuals optimizing for themselves in a group but rather this: unselfishness in service to winning, complementing each other. Takes a certain maturity and if there is less maturity then the manager role is more critical. Create the conditions.
I think Jrue Holiday’s unselfishness has had a real impact on an increasingly unselfish Celts team. In a contract year, his usage rate dropped from 25.0% to 16.6%. FGA went from 15.3 to 10.3. He’s overqualified to be a glue guy, he knows it, he’s fine with it. Just wants to win.
Just sang 'Sweet Caroline' with about 30k other people at the

Son: Mom, where did you watch Ted Lasso?
#TedLasso
Me: In the family room
Son: No, *where*?
Me: On the sofa?
Son: Mom! What streaming service!?
I'm dust. Just total dust.
I never answer the phone and respond quickly to texts. My husband always answers the phone and barely responds to texts. We've been together 18 years. AMA
Thanks so much to
#money2020
for inviting me to discuss the transition from an advertising-based "attention" internet economy to one about value and commerce. One where the rise of the micro-platform will bring innovation and diversity that means real economic growth.
Worth watching. Real leadership: share what you know, take ownership, and let your feelings carry the message. Strength is not lack of emotion. Strength is letting it through.
Large companies started coming to Stripe as the quickest way to adapt their business to internet-native business models (marketplaces, subscriptions, omnichannel). But increasingly they're also seeing way better performance on auth/conversion in A/B tests.
If those images are meant to me, I'm definitely signing up for this program. 😂 Thanks for doing this

is why
#scalingpeople
exists and every conversation with you is a revelation.
It's rare, but sometimes you get things right as a parent. "Don't Speak" comes on the radio while flipping through stations. Kids simultaneously say, "Stop. This is a good song."

Son: "It's actually a great moment for friends."
Friend: "It is. Like, during the Coronavirus, we're still going to a concert, even if it's in Fortnite."
Son: "I'm actually kinda crying."
Never thought I'd say this: Thank you,

1/ Winter break reflection: skiing is similar to growing a company. Lots of upfront costs and awkward logistics just to get on the mountain. Not infrequent equipment issues, some accompanied by physical pain.
A salute to
@SusanWojcicki
. Talk about company builders! Susan taught me the value of humble curiosity over and over again. Kudos and thank you, Susan! Can't wait to see where your curiosity takes you 😀
Today, after nearly 25 years at

Excited that the book I've been working on for a few years, "The Hard Sell," about a scandal at a pharmaceutical startup, will be published in January by Doubleday. Some related news:
Husband and I just realized we both attended Lollapalooza at Great Woods in 1991. Siouxsie was out due to illness, but Jane’s Addiction played “Jane Says” and the crowd exploded. First time I saw

I have come to love Dan Rather over Twitter. I'm old enough that I remember him well as a news anchor and I'll admit that I preferred Tom Brokaw but now, I'm Team Dan!
I hope we can get to a point where the gender of scientists doesn't lead the headlines. Yes, women do science. They also win Nobel Prizes!!!!!
