About to sign off a deal to produce a new series that's literally been a dream since childhood! Based on a series of books that I was a massive fan of and was a huge influence creatively, this is one of those rare moments as a producer where you pinch yourself. More details soon!
Here it is! Proud to announce that I'm producing a live-action series based on Joe Dever's LONE WOLF series of adventure gamebooks. This high-fantasy series was a staple of the 1980/90s and I'm working with Joe's son Ben, to bring them to the screen.

Nothing will derail the production value of your film more than a bad sound mix. Don’t try and do it yourself, put money aside in the budget for the best you can afford.
We really need to stop using the term "support" when referring to British films. British film shouldn't be a cause that needs supporting, it's not a charity or a form of patronage. It's a business and we need to SELL these films to audiences. This is the mindset missing.
Quite sad seeing my timeline full of filmmakers lamenting the lack of producers available to work with on shorts. I feel I've spent much of the last decade shouting about the lack of support for producers and how that will lead to industry stagnation, only to see it come true.
Once the industry is through COVID, please can we use the budgets allocated to it to reduce working hours instead. There's no reason crews can't just work an 8 hour day instead of the 12+ they're forced to now.
New year, new opportunities: I'm currently looking for well-developed feature film scripts, in the $10m-$20m budget range. Any genre considered but need to be captivating concepts/stories, nothing MOTR. Please email logline to info

I’ve developed a lot of projects over the years. Someone is going to have to explain to me how you manage to spend $30m on development, because I don’t think I could manage it, even in a Brewster’s Millions type of situation.
Netflix spent over $30 million on development costs for their ‘MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE’ movie before cancelling it.
Meanwhile, they claim they don’t have enough money to pay actors & writers fairly.

Any other indie producers interested in banding together to use the new Government Kickstarter scheme to offer 16-24yo’s a 6 month job placement? Would need enough of us to offer a minimum of 30 jobs. Government pay for 25 hrs pw. Reply to this thread and I’ll see if it’s viable.
The news about Cineworld is devastating and will likely be followed by more chains. It’s not Bond’s fault. It’s not the studios fault. It’s not the general public’s fault. This pandemic has already decimated the aviation and travel industries. It’s just another casualty.

I’ve met many filmmakers who over the years have told me “they don’t care about the money” and “you focus too much on the business side of things”. There’s a reason for that. Without a viable system of financing and revenues, you won’t get paid. You won’t do this for a living.
Producing an indie film:
Cast: Come back to us when you have financing in place;
Financiers: Come back to us when you have cast and sales in place;
Sales agents: Come back to us when you have financing in place.
Rinse, repeat.

Thinking of running a scheme for my next feature, whereby we will select an emerging/junior producer to come on board as an Associate Producer and work directly with the producer on tasks. Would be paid and credited, hope that it will give their career a boost. Good idea or not?
Controversial hot take: it’s already failed. Any industry that can’t sustain people making a living isn’t a real market.

Every producer on every production should be hiring an associate from a minority background, to shadow and learn from them. Hiring runners and assistants is great but we need more senior level POC in every part of the creative industries.
After the script, a logline is the second most important thing you’ll write. No one wants to commit the time to reading a whole script to see if it’s something they might want to produce/fund, so a great logline breaks that barrier and gets them wanting to know more.

I have a lot of thoughts about the way the streamers are shaping their strategies (which I’ll share later), but for now I’ll just say I’m very sorry for the filmmakers involved here. Hopefully you all got some decent development out of this. Still really disappointing.

If you're a producer and you're managing to get films made, I salute you. It's never been more challenging. In the face of Peak TV and a host of other leisure activities, the business of indie film is disappearing. I'm genuinely worried about where we'll be in a year from now.

This year is going to be another difficult one for indie filmmakers. At some point we're going to need to have a serious discussion about how we attract equity finance back to the sector.
Kenneth Branagh is set to play U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson in Michael Winterbottom's upcoming limited series charting the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic
Don’t get too excited about these COVID restrictions lifting if you work in film and TV. The guidelines we’re working under will almost certainly continue for a while yet. Probably into next year.
All due respect to Michael Winterbottom, but utterly disagree with this. Short films are a viable way to learn the craft. There is still a big jump to making features but this idea that you can just "go and make a film yourself" is so short-sighted.
Michael Winterbottom: "Don’t make a short film, make a long one. That’s the advice I give to young filmmakers. Go out there and shoot something yourself. Not lots of 10 minute things, but a proper one. The only way to learn is to do it."

You can't blame people for not going to cinemas. People are losing their jobs. We face massive uncertainty over our financial futures. I don't blame people for choosing a Netflix subscription over a trip to the cinema. Not everyone has the money to spend, so don't shame them.

A producer on LinkedIn just asked me to give them email contacts for all my investors and finance contacts. For free. No offer of an Exec deal or anything. Just simply give me all those hard earned contacts so I can make my movie. Stunning...
Strangely the last month or so have been perhaps my busiest in a while. From pitching to Amazon, Netflix, Sky and BBC, to signing new projects, doing in-depth development work, to filling in funding applications, it's been non-stop. Add to that trying to work out what the future
Another thing that's been pointed out recently, are the number of people who take producer credits. We all acknowledge that film is a collaborative medium, but it's only ever producers that are asked to share credits. You don't see long lists of writers, directors, editors etc.
What. The. Fuck. Just the other day I was saying how much I admired this guy for forging a way. And then to read that article. This whole fucking industry needs serious regulation. So sorry for all the victims.

A few words for new film producers. When you start out no one tells you the ridiculous amount of your own money you’ll need to invest in yourself. It’s not always immediately apparent but bit by bit, you’ll find you have to spend money just to stay in the game.

There are almost no financially viable models left for indie producers. It's become the ultimate hobby, make money from day jobs (or be independently wealthy) so you can take time off to produce. Needs a hard reset.
Why many UK independent producers are fighting for survival in the new "wild west" | Features | Screen - good article. Seems like the rich (SVODs etc) are getting richer and the poor (indie producers) are getting poorer. So hard to get indie movies made!
Don’t apologise for making approaches to people, even if you consider them to be more successful or experienced than you. There’s a difference between being humble and being self-deprecating.
I can count on one hand the number of actual racists I've met in the film industry over the past 21 years. But I could fill a book with a list of those that have enabled it or not understood how their actions perpetuate racial stereotypes. It's not an easy conversation to have.

Genuinely struggling to see how we’ll get back to production without a vaccine. Even if Bonds/Insurance ask for a COVID waiver, there’s the likliehood of an outbreak on set and the production is halted. That’s a huge risk for financiers and I can’t see many taking it.
So some thoughts on the way streaming is evolving right now, hot off the announcement that Netflix isn't going to fund any of the Breakout film projects. All my own views and musings...
Getting financeable acting talent on indie films is becoming almost impossible - they're all on long HETV schedules. Hoping that financiers move away from it as a requirement but still seems a key factor for many. It's a massive reason indie films take so long to get made.
I've been critical of
@BAFTA
in the past and only joined last year after being invited after taking part in their review process. So credit where credit is due, the steps they've taken to address historic problems is to be commended.
Event movies were the only thing keeping cinemas going and they’ve been robbed of that audience. It doesn’t help that there are cheaper and easily accessible digital platforms now able to beam films and tv directly to consumers.
That's a massive decline in indie film production. From £319m to £175m. Signals fewer films being made and likely lower budgets for the ones that are. I'd say the change in EIS rules has contributed a lot to this, meaning a critical lack of equity available outside of public fund
I was trying to come up with a list of top-level, prolific UK film producers who are either Black, Asian or from another Ethnic Minority. That is that they need to be arguably in the top 50 of producers in this country.
Another reason that directors and writers should not be producers. This industry needs regulation and some sort of licence or qualification to produce. Producing is a big job and it’s so poorly understood, even within the industry.
Just because someone passes on your project, doesn’t mean it’s not a good project. So many shows/films take a long time for someone to recognise what they could be. Keep dreaming dreamers!
‘Squid Game’ creator Hwang Dong-hyuk wrote the show in 2009 but was rejected by studios for 10 years.

I hear so many people talk about awarding things on merit. Who gets to decide what merit actually is, how do they define it? It will always be decided by those in power, so to get a broad consensus of what merit is, there needs to be diversity within that power structure.
Executives were expecting a deluge of pitches after the writers strike, but that didn’t arrive: "If come January and February, it’s still crickets, then we have a problem"
If int’l sales don’t work, how can film financiers make their money back? Without a solid projection of revenues, only a mad few (or public funders) will invest in films. This isn’t a new problem but the current situation has laid the problem bare.

One thing I know is this: stories will never go out of business. The way we tell them and consume may change but they’ll never go away. We need and crave them.
There seems to be consensus on the state of the indie film sector in the UK. It's worth reading these submissions to the DCMS Committee and there are some sound suggestions. Urgent action is needed and those in power in the industry need to do more.
The knock on effect for film production is going to be an existential one. If there are no revenues then how can distributors pay for licenses? If distributor can’t pay for licenses then how does the int’l sales model work?
I like the idea of a UK Film Czar. One of the first things they should do is sit down with DCMS and HMRC and work out a structure for film, TV and games to use SEIS/EIS for single projects again.
We should all (not just producers) be furious at how the indie UK film industry has been left to rot, whilst record sums are brought in via inward investment. Without indie producers, filmmakers have nowhere to go, except those big entities that won’t nurture them.
Loran's spot on with this. There are plenty of schemes and programmes for new and emerging types but they never get to graduate to the big leagues. Financiers and gatekeepers always find a way of being uncomfortable with people who aren't like them.
And that’s a wrap. 23 weeks but we got the ship home safe. Huge thanks to my COVID team and congrats to everyone for getting through it all. Now for a week off and an exciting new job the week after.

This. If you think your producer is an obstacle then you’ve got the wrong producer. Learn to find the right fit, not the ones with the highest profile or deepest pockets.

I’ve spoken to many film industry freelancers who are terrified of going back to that way of working. Quite a few have taken more secure jobs in other industries and although there are filming jobs on the horizon, they’re reticent to quit for a return for one insecure job.
