All this “no days off” & “no off-season” nonsense needs to stop, especially if you’re preaching recovery modalities nonstop. Hard work is essential to performance, but so is time off. Work/life balance is talked about all the time for coaches, should be for athletes as well!

When an athlete has sore abs, nobody bats an eyelash or tells them to stop doing "core" work. Yet when an athlete has a sore low back, it's the end of the world & they're no longer allowed to hinge or squat. Want to reduce the risk of a real back injury? Load it! #antifragile

Horsepower is built mostly in the sagittal plane with the main lifts, but variability is a must so build it in the warmup. Time is a commodity in season, don’t waste it with a 2nd rate warmup. @rhodymbb

We’ve chased the “injury prevention” rabbit down the hole for so long we’ve lost sight of what actually lowers the risk of injury: being robust & resilient. Qualities that are built through adaptation. Adaptation requires stress, & that stress comes from smart AND hard training!

Exploring the corners of movement prep. Warmups get boring and repetitive, especially for athletes, so I’m always searching for engaging & effective ways to prep for training. No circus tricks here, just slight additions to basic patterns to encourage adaptability.

Healthy knees are built by being exposed to appropriately administered stress, not by avoiding it. Provide structures with various patterns, loads, velocities, and ROM (i.e., good training) to give athletes the best chance at staying healthy & performing at their best.

“We’re not training Olympic lifters” is the absolute worst & laziest excuse to omit the weightlifting derivatives from an athletes’ training regime. There are a few valid reasons why you might choose to exclude those exercises from your program, but that one is pure bull s***.

Things that take effort: - being on time - getting good grades - studying film - eating well - getting enough sleep - going to treatment - consistency in the weightroom - being coachable & listening It’s easy to play the sport you love, but GREATNESS demands more than that.

We see more athletes get hurt sprinting, landing, and cutting than we ever do cleaning, squatting, lunging, and hinging. Yet, they are returned to the former long before the ladder. Maybe it’s just me, but the current trend in return to play protocols seems a little backwards 🧐

Really like the glute bridge & curl for some accessory hamstring work, but see it performed with excessive lumbar extension far too often. @NatAchon here performing our fix for that issue by using bands to force a braced & neutral trunk, w/ slight perturbations throws in for fun.

Why would we take an athlete through a standardized movement screen, when there is no such thing as a standardized human? We all accomplish movement with a variety of strategies. If those strategies are safe and effective, who’s to say they need fixed? One size does not fit all.

We must master the basics: foundational patterns, full ROMs, lift heavy & fast. But sport generally doesn’t happen in one plane at a time, & making minor tweaks to the basics can go a long way in developing a robust athlete. As @VernonGriffith4 would say, explore the corners!

A great way to perfect your craft is to perform your craft. Weightlifting, sprints, jumps, COD... whatever it is that you program for your athletes, get out on the floor and practice it. Reading about it is a great and necessary tool, but so is actually applying it.

Using the broad jump to test my own readiness during this cycle. On a good day I’m over 10’ (black cone). Not the case today, & it showed once I got to the bar. Strong correlation throughout this cycle so far. Interesting due to horiz nature of BJ compared to vert nature of WL.
