In the comments, you recognize there are other ways to have meaningful lives. Did you not think that this statement condemns a whole host of people who can’t have children (including adopt children) to second-tier lives? What’s the point of creating this (insulting) hierarchy?
Six years ago today, I submitted my
#philosophy
dissertation. It’s not the favorite thing I’ve written. Not by far. A word of advice to all the grad students tempted by perfectionism in their dissertations: just get the job done! ✅
Philosophers! I’m teaching a feminist philosophy course this fall. Instead of doing articles and book chapters as I usually do, I might do 2-3 books. Which books would you choose? 📚
Greetings from Harvard’s Philosophy Department! Had a great time talking with the current grad students about life as a faculty member and presenting my new research. And so happy to reconnect with faculty and other former grads! 😊
Gearing up for teaching my
#philosophy
course on death for the third time this fall. Will be seeking suggestions this week. First question: best texts on grief (in philosophy or literature)? 📚
Was thrilled to speak today at the Vatican alongside
@BryanVanNorden
and many other great thinkers in philosophy, psychology, the social sciences, and theology!
Last week, two doctors visited my philosophy of
#death
class. One said that the most powerful words between dying and their loved ones were:
I am grateful for…
I am sorry for…
I love you.
A reminder for all, regardless of our stage in life. ❤️
Reflecting on contemporary philosophical writing this evening and how it’s so often sanitized and lacking in voice. So…I wonder… who’s a philosopher you would want to meet based on their writing style (not the details of their life or what you’ve heard about their personality)?
The article I’m proudest of got two rejections (including a desk rejection) before getting an R&R and being published. A 3-year journey (besides 2 years of early versions in my diss). Other pieces I don’t like as much were written + published more quickly. Similar experiences?
Why or why when we get to women philosophers in my courses do students suddenly feel like they're on a first-name basis with the authors? Why does Beauvoir become Simone? And Wolf become Susan? 😠
Philosophy professor question: I always refer to authors using their surname only (e.g., Camus). But occasionally, I receive student essays that add titles (e.g., Mr. Camus). Thoughts? Any problems with this?
Was funny to be back at Harvard last week and speak in the same room where I defended my dissertation seven years ago today! Photo of younger self engaging in defense. ⚔️
Iris Marion Young double-bill today: "Five Faces of Oppression" in Phil Gender and Race and "Throwing Like a Girl" in Phenomenology. I wish I'd met Young. Love her work so much. Do others teach those texts? Which classes?
I’ve embarked on my fifth time teaching Existentialism with my new copy of Basic Writings! Thanks Twitter for inspiring Pengyuan Wang to send me a copy! ✨
Haven’t posted on a while… But wanted to share these beautiful pictures from Cornell, where I’m about to present on Beauvoir at the Phil Dept’s History Proseminar!
Wish I could tweet all of Book II of Marcus Aurelius’s Meditations. But one gem: “In man’s life his time is a mere instant…life is warfare, and a visit in a strange land…What can escort us on our way? One thing, and one thing only: philosophy.”
Teaching a six-week summer Existentialism course. Lectures are 3.5h. Even with a group activity, my voice gave out today after 3h. Medium-sized room but frigid. Anyway…tips on maintaining voice stamina?

I've taught Nancy Bauer's "Beauvoir on the Allure of Self-Objectification" in Existentialism and Phil Gender and Race, and...now I get to teach it in my very own Beauvoir course today! Excited! 💖
Happy World Book Day. 📚🎉🌍 Today, let's celebrate the joy of reading and the power of books to inspire, educate, and entertain. What book has changed your life?
#WorldBookDay2023
I'm a little late to the game. But just finished This Life by
@martinhaegglund
. Most profound work of contemporary philosophy I've read in years! Learned so much and helped me make better sense of my commitments in life.
Soaking up as much sunshine 🌞 before heading to a much cooler and probably rainier Cambridge tomorrow for the Harvard Philosophy Professionalization event!
Whenever I watch my students take an exam, I think of this passage from Lucretius: “It is pleasant, when on the vast sea the winds are stirring up the water, to look at the great struggles of another person from the land.” I was afforded this pleasure three times today!
Having done my best to disengage from the children-as-supreme-meaning-of-life debate from this afternoon, I leave you with photos of one of my great joys: viewing the sunset from my balcony in May! 🌇
A demain, people of X/Twitter!
Before committing to philosophy for good, I was an astronomy and astrophysics major. Having a blast—pardon the pun—at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville! 🚀🚀🚀
Headed to the Barnacle in Coconut Grove for Woofstock! 🐕 🌻
Last year — no joke — Carol and I competed in the dog/dog owner lookalike contest…and won! 🏆
Don’t write on Kant. But studying his works has meant a lot. My first text was his Idea for a Universal History in high school, then for my baccalaureate exam in France, I wrote on Perpetual Peace. Then I did a lot Kant at Harvard (duh). Anyway, happy bday, Immanuel! 🎉🥳🎊
Just realized that I declared a philosophy major 20 years ago this month! Can’t say I’ve never turned back. (I was briefly an astrophysics major during my junior year. I also left grad school to become a writer at one point.) Still, philosophy has inspired me the whole time! 🙏🏽
Gearing up for teaching my
#philosophy
course on death for the third time this fall. Seeking suggestions this week. Second question: I do a unit on facing one’s mortality and use The Death of Ivan Ilych and Heidegger. I love the pairing. Additions?
In action! Today my students covered Kathryn Belle’s article on Sartre and Beauvoir on the race/gender analogy and Shannon Sullivan’s “Race After Beauvoir.” Different handwriting because different people came to the board! 👩🏫📚
I’m a philosophy professor and writer. But if I had an alternate life, my fantasy job would be a massage therapist. You? What do you currently do for work? And what’s your fantasy job? ✨
Had an amazing time at Miami Beach Pride yesterday! Proud to see colleagues and students from FIU marching in the parade! (Carol didn’t get to go, but she posed with my shoes.) 🌈🌈🌈
I usually stick to philosophy here, but I did want to give a shoutout to
@belladepaulo
for her book on being
#singleatheart
! I have many happy photos of me reading the book last month! Her book made me feel seen in a way I hadn’t in a long time! 🙏🏽
I'm delighted to announce the publication of our free, open access book, "Horizons of Phenomenology", a collection of essays on the state of the field. A brief thread about the book, and the long and ultimately victorious struggle to publish it open access. 1/
Back in the classroom tomorrow for the first time after my sabbatical. Teaching a Beauvoir course 📚and Philosophy of Death! 💀 Couldn’t have a better combo! 🥳
#Philosophy
#teacherlife
#AcademicChatter
Finished teaching the death chapter of Being and Time today in Existentialism. 💀Definitely one of my favorite texts to teach, though also the hardest! Anyone else teach it as a stand-alone (i.e., not in a Heidegger course)? Your experience?
Feminist philosophy has always had top notch edited volume game—a product of being locked out by the 70s, 80s, and 90s good old boy gatekeepers of the major journals. This volume is similarly outstanding!
Work by those below, plus
@cc_leboeuf
,
@perryzurn
,
@jenmcweeny
, lots more
I do a creative project in all my philosophy classes. Most students opt for visual art or non-standard philosophical media, such as poems. The projects are the highlight of my courses. 😊
Rereading Lorde's "On the Uses of Anger." Interested in secondary sources on her sentence: "I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own." Philosophers working on

The eclipse in Miami was not really noticeable! 😩 Instead, I reminisced about the 1999 eclipse that I saw from Paris. This was our dog, Sparky, who we were trying to protect from burning his eyes with a scarf! Wasn’t he so cute? 🥰🐕
@Savannah__P
Just automate the process and hunker down. Have your materials ready and keep on submitting even when the rejections roll in and you may feel discouraged. Don’t get caught up in doubt etc. Keep calm and carry on.
