My evening
#COVID19
update. I have four points::
1. The1st
#COVID19
case in the US was diagnosed Jan 21;
2. It has since taken 53 days to do ~20,000 tests in the US;
3. That's how many South Korea does in 1 day.
4. Without testing we are losing the battle against the virus
In the last 72 hrs my phone has exploded with calls/texts/emails of people who have tested positive and are asking for advice. Thus I put together a 🧵with answers:
1. If I have symptoms and my RT is neg do I don't have COVID? Maybe or maybe not. Get a 2nd test 24 hrs later.
Omicron is everywhere! All evidence still suggests:
- Mild infections in vaccinated
- Lower risk of infection in boosted
- Prior infection not protective
- Unvaccinated will get infected
Iceland has been a vaccination success. Why is it seeing a coronavirus surge? Iceland proves vaccines work, out of the 1,300 people currently infected, just 2% are in the hospital and the country hasn’t recorded a virus death since late May.

Hospital surge capacity requires space (rooms, ICUs), stuff (ventilators, PPE, tests, Remdesivir) and staff (physicians, APPs & nurses). You can build SPACE, you can buy STUFF but STAFF (in particular nurses) is the real issue. There is simply not enough staff.

As an Inf Diseases clinician I am very worried about the current surge in COVID. The overwhelming majority of patients I am seeing are unvaccinated. If you are still waiting to be vaccinated find a vaccine today, if you don’t, Delta will find you.
Talked to a group of most unvaccinated persons today. Realized that their problem is not lack of information but actually excess of misinformation. Really hard to counter that!

A few thoughts after hearing Trump: at this point, we are past containment. Containment is basically futile. Containment efforts won’t reduce the number who get infected in the US.

For healthcare to manage a COVID surge one needs space, stuff and staff. During the first wave the issue was lack of space and stuff, during this wave the issue is lack of staff. One can build space and purchase stuff but staffing shortages are really the hardest one.

3) The goal is not to show how smart you are. It's to get people to understand what you're talking about.
