🎎DOLL DILEMMA👹
The question of what happens to unwanted dolls is a very serious one in Japan.
Household items, should they reach the age of 100, may acquire a soul or spirit, and as they are human in shape, dolls are particularly susceptible to becoming 'tsukumogami' (付喪神).
👣KYŌTO'S BLOOD CEILINGS🩸
The rear portion of the ceiling in Genkō-an's (源光庵) main hall is stained with what at first glance looks like water damage...but soon a footprint appears on the rust-coloured wood, the shape of a doll, shadowy fingertips, the fold of a kimono!

🥚GACHA ODDITIES🐣

On August 16th the spirits of the dead, having arrived in the city on the 7th for a brief holiday in our world, return to the Netherworld for another year.
Kyōto says goodbye in spectacular fashion, lighting great bonfires to guide the dead home.

Some time in February families begin to unwrap & display a set of ornamental dolls called 'Hina-ningyō' (雛人形). These dolls lie at the heart of the 'Hina Matsuri' (雛祭り) celebrations on March 3rd.
In English it is known as "Doll’s Day" or "Girls’ Day".

🍂AUTUMN EQUINOX🙏
Today is Shūbun-no-hi (秋分の日 'Autumn Equinox Day’)📿
Typically falling on September 22nd or 23rd, this time of year coincides with the Buddhist observances 'Shūki Higan-e' (秋季彼岸会 'Autumn Equinoctial Services'). It has been a national holiday since 1948.

June 16th is a day for celebrating traditional Japanese sweets...something we do a lot in the tearoom.
After a series of epidemics Emperor Ninmyō (仁明天皇) held special prayers on the 16th June 848 for the health and prosperity of the nation.
🎋BRILLIANT BAMBOO🎍
The bamboo groves of Sagano (嵯峨野竹林の道) may be world famous, but there are many -equally gorgeous- places to see bamboo forests in and around Kyōto.

🎋KYŌTO'S GREAT WALL🧱
The Odoi (御土居) was an earthen berm, erected at the very beginning of 1591 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣秀吉). Standing just short of 5m tall, the 22.5km embankment encircled the city with an outer moat (where there weren't rivers) and numerous 'gates'.
👣LOTUS LOVE😇
In Kyōto 'kanrensetsu' (観蓮節), 'lotus flower viewing', coincides with the culmination of the Gion Matsuri, when the gods of Yasaka-jinja arrive at their temporary holiday abode in the city.
Temple ponds offer a welcome distraction from the sweltering summer days.
🌳BONSAI BONANZA🤏
Kyōto hosts 2 major exhibitions of Bonsai each year at the Miyako Messe: the 'Nihon Bonsai Taikanten' (日本盆栽大観展) in Autumn, and the 'Gafūten Shōhin' (小品盆栽 雅風展) in January, which focuses on Bonsai so small they can be held in the palm of your hand.

😨KYOTO'S MOST HAUNTED SPOT😱
Capital for over 1000 years, Kyōto has had its fair share of ghosts and monsters, but one of the most celebrated is the demon-king Shuten-dōji.
His head was buried on Mt. Ōe, and it is said he haunts the forest here still.
🥁THE VALLEY OF SONG🎵
Ōhara (大原) is small village to the north east of Kyōto. It was once a prosperous enclave of the great temple of Enryaku-ji (延暦寺), further up the mountain.
In its heyday a large religious community, dedicated to Buddhist chant, flourished here.
