My last scoop. At 1 p.m. today, after beginning my career at The Edmonton Journal in 1967 I received a phone call from Toronto informing me my position had been eliminated by Post Media. Thank you all so much for reading. Hardly the way I hoped it would end. -30-
Alberta isn’t Edmonton. It isn’t Calgary. It’s every smaller centre with a curling rink and a rodeo. It’s a bread basket. It’s the oil patch. That proved itself tonight.
I think Oilers owner Daryl Katz should reduce the price of a beer from double figures to maybe five bucks so Oilers fans can numb their pain for the rest of the season.
NHL should thank Craig Button for keeping fans in Canada engaged by not only selecting the all-time teams for all seven teams but by putting himself our there to handle the abuse from fans who think the league started in about 2006.
OK, Ken Holland. Enough already. The Edmonton Oilers simply can't trust Mikko Koskinen in goal. Shoots puck over glass early. Gives up ghastly 1-0 goal yet again. Leaks three other smelly ones. He is not a starting NHL goaltender. Period. Gotta go. And gotta go NOW,
New arena deal for Calgary includes $330 million from province. I think that’s roughly $330 million more than provided by the province for Rogers Place. Do I have that right? Anybody remember exactly?
Getting SHUTOUT 27-0 in the CFL is virtually impossible. Getting SHUTOUT in this league TWICE by the B.C. Lions the same season to set the North American pro sports record with 21 consecutive home losses … Fire the GM. HC. OC. Release the QB. SOMETHING HAS TO HAPPEN.
Not enough is being made of goaltender Stu Skinner equalling Grant Fuhr’s franchise record 10th consecutive win. The Edmonton native took a lot of heat for his start to the season, but he’s been a study in steady.
There’s not a doubt in my mind that Connor McDavid and the Oilers will get back to the Stanley Cup Final and win it. No knocking them for the sensational story they wrote this year. And what a sensational scene Edmonton gave the team, the country and the entire hockey world.
Reports out of Vancouver that Canucks situation on a level beyond any team in sports so far. Protocol list now into double figures. Brazil variant reportedly involved. Forget how this might impact trade deadline. You have to wonder if they'll be able to continue their season.
Because he was a Calgary Flame, Jarome Iginla has never been properly celebrated in home town Edmonton/St. Albert. Edmonton Sports Hall of Fame? Road/arena like Mark Messier in St. Albert? Something significant is due.
Just discovered Edmonton Sports Hall of Fame just announced class of 2018. They've made me the first sportswriter in history to be enshrined. How cool is that?
How many Edmonton Oilers fans are waking up this morning hoping coach Dave Tippett goes back to Stuart Skinner in goal Saturday nights versus Chicago? I'm guessing ALL of them.
You watch the way Adam Larsson is playing and read what he says about how he's playing and think he was traded for Hart Trophy winner Taylor Hall and see the guy Jordan Eberle was effectively traded for go on the waiver wire Monday and there's no defending GM Peter Chiarelli.
OK, hockey writers association. It’s been an hour. Why is it taking so long to out the one voting member who not only prevented McDavid from being unanimous but voted him FIFTH?
I used to love social media. Now so many haters and trolls. Some of the stuff out there aimed at Canada's juniors is pretty revolting. First we put all sort of pressure on these kids and then we treat them like this. Sickening.
Anybody who suggests the Oilers should “blow it up” like the Toronto Maple Leafs is nuts. You have to knock on the door a few times before you knock it down. This is a Stanley Cup calibre team and I believe will be the team to end Canada’s Cup drought.
I think it's time for Peter Chiarelii to come out and say that no way will he be dumb enough to trade away Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. If you can't find pieces to put with McDavid, Draisaitl and Nugent-Hopkins with all their options in your top six, you can'y keep the job.
The Oilers just fired a head coach with a .643 percentage coming off a 4-1 win on the road in which Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl didn’t register a point. Not saying. Just saying.
Goals: LeonDraisaitl 32. Connor McDavid 31. And Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is five points back of his career high of 56. All three are having career years and playing their asses off.
Oh, and I stand by my prediction. The next time Edmonton wins a home game at Commonwealth Stadium will be the Oilers at the Heritage Classic against the Flames.
Rachel Homan was wonderful in handling the moment — a fourth Scotties title — yet being so classy in understanding the emotions of Jennifer Jones Scotties career concluding meant it couldn’t be her moment. That helped make it a great moment.
I believe 99% of Edmonton Oilers fans will be cheering for Jesse Puljujarvi who has joined the Pittsburgh Penguins on a free agent tryout after being cleared for full-contact training earlier this week. A failure as a first round draft choice here, he was well-liked as a person.
Oilers up 4-0 after the first period tonight in Nashville. Pretty sure the difference between tonight and the opening two losses to Vancouver is Jack Michaels.
Just filed my Joey Moss column. He'd suffered a broken hip recently and has had Alzheimers for a couple years. Joey Moss inspired thousands of Down syndrome families and was more famous and more beloved than most of the Oilers and Eskimos players. Died this afternoon.
I don't know if you've looked ahead to next weekend yet but It's Maple Leafs vs Oilers, Auston Matthews vs Connor McDavid for three consecutive games at Rogers Place including first one on Hockey Night In Canada.
Two kids from Irma, Alberta, goalie Scott Ratzlaff (Seattle WHL) and right winger Jagger Fircus (Moose Jaw WHL) have been invited to Team Canada’s World Junior camp. What are the odds on that? Irma population 521.
St. Louis broadcast crew is right behind me in the press box. "We're so far away from the ice that we might as well be doing this game from the A&W in Red Deer," the play-by-play guy tells his listeners.
What an unbelievable experience! Being Grand Marshall of a Grey Cup Parade is not something a sports columnist expects in his career. And to have fans, three, four and five deep cheering, waving, taking pictures and otherwise making me feel like I deserved the honour was a rush,
Also thank you to TSN for tribute early in fourth quarter. Things like this just don't happen to most scribes. Exceptionally touched that they'd do that for me.
Blow a 2-0 lead for a fifth straight loss at home to drop to three games over .500 and lose 5-2 to the Seattle Kraken … Time to make a move, Ken Holland.
Never been a guy to call out the refs. Over the years, I spent a lot of evenings drinking with them. But how much of this evidence do you have to see to ask what the deal is when it comes to Connor McDavid? Elbow in the chops last night in L.A, too.
The public outcry over video of McDavid being crosschecked into the boards last night is getting to the point where the league can't stick their fingers in their ears as normal.
Enough already Oilers fans. Gary Bettman isn’t anti Edmonton. The zebras aren’t anti Oilers. They’re down 2-1 in this series because they’ve taken dumb penalties at bad times. (And yes the officiating has been pretty shabby so far across the board. Not saying otherwise.)
So far, I'm impressed with the way Canada, especially Alberta and particularly Edmonton have responded to COVID-19. I've always said it. There are few places with the sense of community we have here.
There is no bronze medal in the Stanley Cup playoffs. The members of the Edmonton Oilers have to wake up in a strange space today. So close. So far away. But, damn, there should be no shame for losing to that Colorado hockey team. Avs were worthy.
Just learned that Mayor Sohi has received a letter from Premier Kenny informing that the province will join the city in support to play host to a likely five games of the FIFA 2026 Canada-USA-Mexico World Cup.
So, let us overview. Game 7 of SC final. Acquire wingers for Leon Draisaitl. Improve depth etc. McDavid and Draisaitl locks to extend. Bouchard emerged as star. Oil built to play entertaining, exciting hockey and proved they can now play defence, too. Do I have all that right?
It makes sense for Oilers to be talking trade involving Cam Talbot. Agree or disagree, they're all in with Koskinen. Talbot has value and they have goaltenders developing. But I hate it when you ship out a guy who was all-in on making Edmonton his year-round home.
Halloween as a kid involved hitting 100 houses in Lacombe. Then we headed to a costume judging event. I won it one year when my mom dressed me as a tramp. Our house was must-hit because of mom’s famed popcorn balls. She made 300 of them one year. Lost her this month. She was 97.
Can't believe Toronto Maple Leafs fired Mike Babcock. Just nuts. Oh, and tell me again Toronto scribes, how sad McDavid is in Edmonton because he's not a Leaf. He's gotta be giddy.
Both Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid deliver a statement to their teammates by showing up a practice the day after All-Star game. That's real leadership. Don't have to say a word leading into key three games Calgary, St. Louis and Calgary Wednesday, Friday, Saturday.
Nobody expected McDavid to walk into the media room for exit interviews the morning after "breaking his leg" in Calgary the night before. But there he was. Walking. Normal. If there'd have been any water around he might have been walking on it.
Thank you so much to the Edmonton Elks for the special scoreboard tribute late in the first half Saturday. It just happened to be the first game for my grandson Aiden. Going to miss going to EE games. Started writing home game stories in '71 and became home/away beat guy in '73.
Here’s a dare for EE. To get season ticket numbers back up, you get one vote if you sign up for multiple years. Vote change name back to Eskimos. Or go forward with Elks. Season ticket holders were polled before the ‘woke’ move and voted 90% to keep the name.
As good of an old-time game as Oilers 5-3 win over Tampa was tonight, the second period Jack Michaels had in the broadcast booth was better. He totally recognized the special game he was calling, shared his elation and got a chance to showcase his boxing blow by blow talent.
First decent crowd since Elks name change. Edmonton with comeback and last play field goal to win it. Twenty-two straight losses at home. Now two straight wins. Lost of stuff to debate. But for the first time in three seasons Edmonton feels like a football town again.
Crushed to learn Perry Mah, long time photographer at Sun, has died. Worked with Perry on hundreds of assignments and several book projects including Epic Legacy Eskimos book, Oilers book and Gretzky book.. Great eye. Great guy. In many ways the photographer of my career.
Another fabulous, unforgettable Stanley Cup Final elimination game win for the Edmonton Oilers. How many buildings, cars, etc. will be painted ‘We Believe!’ to greet the Oilers for Game 6 at home Friday? One thing I believe — Connor McDavid, win or lose, just won the Conn Smythe.
Greg Cote of the Miami Herald, expert hockey analysis obviously, is the name of the scribe who wrote going into the final that Connor McDavid is over-rated. Anybody read a follow-up piece?
If it wouldn’t matter to the NHL if the second leading scorer isn’t voted to playing the All-Star Game I wonder how the league would feel if the No. 1 scorer decided to stay home?
It only counts as one win. But what an unforgettable 8-1 victory in Game 4 for the Oilers to stay alive. Also score it a total triumph for Edmonton. What a scene the city gave for a return to the Stanley Cup final for the first time since ’06. Awesome.
I wonder what the NHL fine would be for a team that put together package of un-called penalties committed against one specific player so far this season and ran it on the scoreboard for 10 minutes leading to the opening faceoff of their next game?
It might turn out to be brilliant and result in a totally turned around season and the Oilers returning to Stanley Cup contender. But, man, the optics of everything right now are awful.
Decided to wait until morning to see if I felt the same way. I do. Irma’s Carson Soucy should be suspended for the rest of playoffs for post-game crosscheck to the face of Connor McDavid. Defining decision for Dept. of Player Safety involves greatest player in game.
Tell you what. If you don't like Holland for the job, take a stand and say who you'd hire. I'm tired of all the keyboard warriors who want to fire everybody and won't step up and name their choice for the Oilers job.
The CFL has to get out of this bogus "roster bonus" where they cut players with a bonus coming so they don't have to pay it. Makes the teams and the league look dishonest.
Edmonton Oilers have flown 17,579 kilometres to play three games so far. And they're home for a practice this morning before the fly off to Winnipeg to add on some more. Has anybody given any thought what a triumph it would be to return home from Winnipeg at 2-2?
Three stages to a story. 1. Here it comes. 2. Here it is. 3. There it goes. I'm now at Stage 3. Thanks to everybody who was passionate and compassionate. Time to move on and find a new chapter is now on deck.
And now the Winnipeg Jets have joined the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames and will all look after part time arena staff. Prairie fans can now all be proud of their organizations.
Tre Ford has became a certified CFL superstar. And the EE, with a 36-27 ‘W’ — a team that wasn’t worth watching during a North American pro sports record 22 consecutive home losses —has become one of the most exciting entertaining teams to watch. Remarkable.
For the record.
A) I haven’t changed my mind about the Oilers despite 2-7-1 start.
B) It would be insane to fire a young coach with a .667 winning percentage.
C) Campbell in goal was a mistake. Skinner will get it together.
D) Bouchard is going to be great.
The Edmonton Oilers players, finally eligible, had their first vaccine shots this week. Mikko Koskinen's went in high glove side. Sorry. Couldn't resist.
