Sad sad day. Uncle Percy did it all - saw Bradman in 48, got bailed out by Satha in the 70s, had his flag confiscated at Lord's in 84, got under Kapil's skin during SL's maiden Test win in 85.
He was always kind, always generous, always hilarious. And always at the cricket. 1/2
I'll miss bumping into him and hearing him say 'Hello my friend'. I'll miss watching on telly and seeing him waving his flag. His love for life, and for SL cricket, was truly inspiring. RIP Uncle.
So chuffed with the IslandsXI Asia cover - all thanks to the masterful Gunjan Ahlawat and the
@PenguinIndia
team.
On shelves 12th Dec, pre-order link in bio now!
Real pleasure - and proper privilege - to get to spend some time talking Sri Lanka with
@nassercricket
this afternoon. The first England captain I remember watching, and a champion of a man!
Still processing the most amazing fortnight in Sri Lanka.
My crap photos never come close to capturing the magic of the island - but i fall more in love every time i visit. Thanks to everyone who made it such a special trip!
Chamari for the Thunder so far: 52 (39), 80 (54), 13 (22), 32 (26), 69 (40).
A modest start that explains why she’s been overlooked by franchises for so long 😳
Thanks for the kind words Father Marc. The Royal-Thomian has a wonderful legacy, and surely stands alone as the greatest game in schools cricket. Wishing both teams nothing but the best for the 144th!
S. Thomas' College Warden Rev.
@MarcBillimoria
speaking to the two teams due to face off at the 144th Royal-Thomian encounter (March 16-18, 2023) touches on how much the annual encounter is seen as an important part of the history and heritage of cricket in Sri Lanka.
Great day of Test cricket. SL looked down and out at 6-3 and 92-6, but superb knocks from DDS and Milan Rathnayake give them a glimmer of hope. They may still look back and rue that first hour - but at lunch, would have bitten hands off for 236
Happy 60th to one of the real ones.
Here's Aravinda, on Arj's sledging:
"We do it too, but in Sinhalese and are perhaps more sardonic than aggressive in our heckling. Arjuna might say . . . 'this one's no good, he can't even hit Aravinda off the square.' 1/2
🎂Happy Birthday Arjuna Ranatunga🎂

2 weeks until An Island's Eleven paperback hits shelves - fresh new cover and all.
It's a great companion for the world cup (we all know those middle overs can get dull).
Or a thoughtful bday/halloween/xmas present for the cricket lover in your life...
DDS is set to become SL’s 18th Test captain. Here’s a kutty story. He debuted against Aussies, world’s number one team. How did he fare on his Test debut? Well, he defended the first five balls and smashed the sixth delivery for a six. Only Sri Lankan to get off the mark with a 6

Something that
@brookeswrites
pointed out to
@afidelf
yesterday was that, around the 2011 CWC, Dilshan had more ODI centuries than Sanga & Mahela combined
Well, turns out this was wrong. He had as many centuries as Sanga, Mahela & Tharanga (the next top 3) combined.

COLOMBO: Can’t wait for this one - I’ll be down at Cafe Kumbuk signing some books 3-6 tomoro. And chatting to the master
@afidelf
from about 4pm! Come down if you’re around…
Lord’s pitch - still looking a little green just under 19 hours out.
Could be another tough test for SL’s top order - and will be interesting to see how the seamers cope with the slope.
At least it’s a good deal warmer than Manchester. 🤞for another great Test
Had the most wonderful weekend at

India today. I’ve loved every second!!
When I first moved to Colombo in 2018, I watched Dhananjaya Lakshan score a really special hundred for Richmond College. Seems like yesterday. Today he’s an
@OfficialSLC
player. Buzzing.
Was this the moment a nation started to believe? Just the 4th time SL had chased down 250+…as Ravi Pushpakumara told me, ‘suddenly they looked like 14 brothers’.
A new chapter is fully warranted.
What a joy to see an SL side channeling the spirit of ‘96 - strangle by spin and bash the crap out of bowlers from ball 1.
A truly historic performance - roll on the ODIs…
Chuffed for Asitha. 5-for at Lord's is a great reward for all the hard yards he's put in over the past few years. Not sure why he didn't take the ball first thing this morning...
Floored by this one. Pradeep Mathew helped me fall in love with Sri Lanka, and Chats with the Dead/The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida is a proper masterpiece. Thanks for the kind words

🇮🇳 you beauty! Got to chat to 2 amazing writers, who were lovelier than I could have imagined. Met people I’ve worked with for years who now feel like fam. Signed more copies of AIE than I knew existed. And had a run-in with a roadside kebab that shook me to my core. What a trip!
even before today's explosion, Shanaka averages 38.77 (SR 149) in India (vs 21/121 in all T20is). Something in the water there hits him different - get the man an IPL contract!
@DinushaJGamage
Uncle P told me he was waiting for Wettimuny to get 200 to jump the barrier and run around the boundary. He was never afraid to get on the wrong side of police if it meant supporting SL - once he was locked in the back of a cop car and had to follow the game on the radio!
@DinushaJGamage
Lord's is pretty draconian. Flags are on the list of banned items - and groundstaff/police were on high alert after the pitch invasion on the first morning.
Met Jagan Vinyagam, 48, originally from Chennai but living in NJ for last 20 years. Paid $350 for a "premium" ticket, only to be randomly assigned to last row, top of the stadium, section 247. He feels like he got scammed. "there was no transparency in the ticket buying process."
LONDON: I'll be
@BurleyFisher
in Dalston next Tuesday (16th May) chatting to my pal
@MarkMachado
about cricket, Sri Lanka, short eats and anything else you wanna ask about. Would love to see you there...
Massive thanks to

@AveBenedictus
for having me down last night - was a real rush signing some books! Now just need to work on the ol signature…🙈
Today’s kutty story. This is Kugadas Mathulan from
St. John’s College, Jaffna. The 17-year-old is currently in Madras because M.S. Dhoni wanted to take a look at him. He has been currently assessed by CSK. Over the next few days, he’ll be bowling at Chepauk.
HUGE moment. Having made a mess of things in 68, would’ve been a catastrophe if the Israel boycott cost SL a place at the 79 WC. As it was, they beat India and took a giant leap towards Test status…
Am just reading
@brookeswrites
book on the history of Sri Lanka. And I have just seen something I had forgotten. Sri Lanka almost didn't make it to the 1979 World Cup, which was the tournament that changed everything for them.
Thanks for sending this through
@brookeswrites
Seems it’s as exciting as Ocean’s Eleven.
Do I have to come all the way to Chelmsford to get this signed from you?

Whole episode:

Great stuff from
@timwig
. From 7 warm ups in 84 to a single 3-day game now. SLC not blameless but the ECB needs to bring back proper tours - otherwise it’s Test cricket and the fans that suffer
Test cricket still pays most of the bills in English cricket.
Enlightened self-interest demands that England’s opponents are given more scope than West Indies and Sri Lanka this summer to show their best.
To start, more funding and better preparation
“Drinking my Lion beer in the company of the cricket-crazy waiters, I began to draw together the threads that make up 🇱🇰 cricket. Elitist amateurism, cavalier batsmanship, relaxed sociability. And hedonism.”
Fully accurate or not, a line only Mike Marqusee could have penned
What a catch. What a moment.
SL fans carried their players - and Kapil - on their shoulders back to the pavilion.
I’m sure a few glasses of arrack were raised in honour of ADM, Saliya and Rumesh 🇱🇰🇱🇰
A red letter day for SL cricket, their maiden Test win in 1985. Rumesh Ratnayake took 9 wickets while Amal Silva hit 111 and had 9 dismissals. Arjuna had Gavaskar stumped. President JRJ declared a national holiday, ‘The Big Brother had been cut to size,’ wrote Rajan Bala.
So sad to hear of Clive Inman’s passing. Wish I’d got the chance to chat to him. 8-min 50 means he’s enshrined in history forever, but his legacy is so much more than that. He showed fans in every corner of England that Sri Lankans could *play*. And play with style. RIP Clive.

Asitha was breathing 🔥 this morning. The most hostile spell I’ve seen in quite some time. What a day to be back in Galle - for once I was very happy to be watching from side-on
How well Asitha bowled today. His morning spell was a treat. A poor man’s Allan Donald. Here’s the Irish captain’s take. ‘He made it hostile. He was accurate with his bouncers. He made life tough for us and bowled an impressive spell. Then later on, he got the ball to reverse.’
As
@brookeswrites
said, Mathews bowling Sri Lanka’s first over in the WC over Thushara was a dead certainty, and it happened exactly as predicted despite defending such a low score. 😅
