SOLBERG: As Ottawa piles on the taxes, small businesses can't catch a break. Upcoming tax hikes will cut workers’ take-home income & further drive up the cost of doing business at a time when business owners can least afford it.
Today, all 13 Canadian Premiers have joined the calls from CFIB & small business owners across the country by urging the federal government to extend the deadline for the forgivable portion of the
#CEBA
loan.

update: All 13 Premiers across Canada signed a letter today to the PM calling for a year extension to the CEBA loan deadline (the forgivable deadline). Premiers, thank you for listening to CFIB's call on this critical file. I sure hope our federal leaders do the same.
So people take me seriously when I say Regina is the windiest place on earth… this trampoline blew over our fence and into our backyard last week..still unclaimed.
To help small biz' weather the storm, CFIB is urging governments at all levels to focus on policies that will address the rising cost of doing business. From reducing taxes for small biz' on things like income, fuel & property, to extending the CEBA loan repayment deadline.
CEBA loan repayment deadline puts pressure on small businesses. "CEBA is going to hurt us more than it's going to help us, I think, in the end." "The repayments and interest rate could be devastating for small entrepreneurs." - MB small business owner.
Appreciate
@AleanaYoung
& the
@Sask_NDP
echoing calls from CFIB for governments to recognize the potentially devastating impacts of the upcoming CEBA loan deadline. "There is a cost to doing nothing. The potential loss of thousands of businesses.."
Today, I wrote again to Minister
@cafreeland
and Min Harpauer about CEBA. If the Feds won’t extend the deadline, the Sask. Party needs to actually do the work. If they’re not prepared to do that,
@CarlaBeckSK
and
@NDPSask
are ready to lead.

As the CEBA deadline looms, some businesses are finding they simply don’t qualify for refinancing, and that means new interest burdens cutting sharply into their bottom lines. All of this comes at a rough time for small businesses.
The SaskEnergy rate hike is just the latest in a long list of new/increased gov't-imposed costs being piled on small biz'. SaskPower has also hiked their rates, WCB premiums are going up & as of July 1, the small biz' tax is back. Cost relief is becoming urgent for SK small biz'.
SaskEnergy’s proposed rate comes as another blow for small biz' – many of which have not yet recovered from the pandemic. 1 in 6 SK small biz' are considering closure; 80% are struggling to keep up with gov't-imposed costs. Read more:
CFIB is seeking action on carbon tax rebate program | Small businesses in MB, SK, ON and AB are owed $2.5B in federal carbon tax rebates. CFIB is calling on Ottawa to immediately disburse those promised funds to small firms.
#mbpoli
With just over 2 months left until the CEBA loan repayment deadline, a majority (87%) of small businesses that took on a CEBA loan said they need a further extension to the end of 2024.
Sask. businesses facing shutdown if they can’t get help with their CEBA loans. "If I don't pay it off now, I will be in default to the federal gov’t.” Without making a CEBA re-payment by Jan.18 “I will be looking at going under.” - Sask. business owner.
Opinion: Hiking taxes, electricity rates & payroll costs all lead to one place: increased prices. There is a limit to how much of its costs a business can pass on to customers & remain viable & that limit is already being tested coming out of the pandemic.
This time of year, I can’t help but think about all the time I’ve wasted scrolling through online recipes, past all the ads & stories about the author making it with her great aunt, only to finally reach the ingredients, realize I don’t have 1/2 of them & go back to square 1.
Restaurants & bars brace for biggest alcohol tax jump in 40 years as the federal gov’t moves forward with plans to hike alcohol excise taxes by 6.3% on April 1, despite warnings that this could force some out of business.
Appreciated the opportunity to discuss small business owners’ priorities with Mayor Sandra Masters today. Looking forward to continuing to work with
@CityofRegina
to support small businesses!
Opinion: SK small businesses owed $300M-plus in carbon tax rebates. With the carbon tax set to increase next week, small biz’ could use these rebates now more than ever.
Why is no one talking about the nationwide shortage of chili paste? I’ve resorted to ordering from overseas. I thought it was a little pricey… but turns out I ordered 3.5 litres.
Time to dust off your boots! The 2023 Canadian Western Agribition has officially kicked off in Regina! 🤠 Tonight, the world’s top freestyle bullfighting athletes go head-to-head with fierce bulls in the final event of the BFO regular season. 🐂
CFIB: Ottawa announces it will cut the carbon tax rebates paid to small businesses by $500m in 2024. This is salt is the wound as the federal government is still sitting on $2.5B already owed to small firms (including $300M in SK & $144M in MB).
This morning, CFIB was pleased to meet with MB Minister of Finance
@AdrienLouisSala
. We appreciated the opportunity to share small business owners’ priorities for the upcoming provincial budget.
To help address healthcare challenges, CFIB is urging government's to commit to measuring & reducing the red tape burden for physicians. This will allow physicians to focus their time & energy on caring for their patients, & increase the overall capacity of the healthcare system.
Great welcome reception for the Western Premiers’ Conference!
So great to see my colleagues and many stakeholders in-person.
Looking forward to productive discussions tomorrow on shared priorities and opportunities.
Sounding the alarm for small businesses – “The same loan that was once a lifeline during the (COVID-19) pandemic is now threatening to sink the small businesses that are only just getting by.”
Sask. restaurant facing possible bankruptcy as pandemic loan payments approach. "My accountant is actually asking me, 'do you want to file for bankruptcy?' It's my first business. I don't want to give up just like that."
Long-standing, Winnipeg hardware shop set to close. Unfortunately, for many small independent biz’ it seems the odds are stacked against them in favour of big-box stores. This biz owner fears that “a couple years from now we won't have any local stores."
Very sad to see yet another local business close due to the financial impacts caused by the pandemic.
While restrictions may have ended, the lingering effects (i.e., debt/stress/inflation) continue to hammer small businesses & they need support now more than ever!

Ottawa sitting on $2.5 billion in carbon tax rebates owed to small businesses in MB, SK, ON and AB, yet there is no mechanism in place to return a dime.
CFIB is pleased to see Minister Harpauer
@SKGov
join our calls for the federal government to immediately return the $300M in carbon tax rebates that are owed to Sask. small businesses (approx. $7,000 per business).
We also hope to see this money returned to ALL small businesses
Great to meet with
@CarlaBeckSK
Leader of
@Sask_NDP
along with
@WotherspoonT
and
@nicolesarauer
to discuss the state of small businesses in Saskatchewan. Appreciate you taking the time to listen to the concerns of business owners.
OPINION: The federal gov't owes MB small businesses $144M in carbon tax rebates. “All small businesses bear the costs of the federal carbon tax and, like consumers, should receive a rebate of some of the revenue.”

Almost one-third of small businesses in Sask. did not pay back their CEBA loan by the deadline. "Many business owners did not suspect that come 2023, they would be worse off than they were at the height of the (COVID-19) pandemic."
CFIB is calling on
@SKGov
to reject the Rate Review Panel’s recommendation for SaskPower to implement a 4% increase on April 1st. Higher energy costs mean small biz' have fewer resources to grow, create jobs, and contribute to the provincial economy.
WATCH: “Sorry we’re closed.” It’s a sign that more than a few local Regina businesses have been forced to hang outside the front window of their shop, as money is tight in 2024.

Return of $2.5B can’t come soon enough: CFIB. The federal government is sitting on billions of dollars in promised carbon tax rebates that should be in the hands of struggling small businesses.
Be prepared to see a dip in your take-home income starting Jan. 1 due to federal tax hikes. Both CPP & EI will see changes that will further drive up the cost of doing business for Canada’s small biz' while shrinking the paycheques of Canadian workers.
Second cuppa of the day (felt right to have one with the sunrise). This time we visited Baked Café downtown Whitehorse. 10/10 for their 10+ different types of scones.
CFIB has long been encouraging both federal & provincial governments to reduce the burden of payroll costs for small businesses. Eliminating the provincial payroll tax in Manitoba would benefit local business owners, their employees & their customers.

SOLBERG: SK businesses still facing struggle to survive. "An alarming 17% of SK biz' are at risk of closure. The resulting damage to the provincial economy underscores the need for gov'ts to address the concerns of small firms before many more are lost."
We absolutely did not catch 'em all. In fact, I think this new mosquito control program actually increased their chances of survival. The mosquitos are running this town right now.
In my latest opinion piece, I cover how the PST expansion will serve to further erode people’s bottom line & put additional strain on spending habits, which will inevitably come as yet another blow to Sask's small businesses.

Savings, fundraisers, additional loans help Sask. small businesses meet CEBA deadline. “Most businesses are in a worse time right now than when CEBA loans were issued. I feel like it was given to you without any thought or reasoning.” - SK business owner.

would contain tax breaks for small businesses. Topping the list was the small business tax rate, which will raise to 1% later this year, and return to its pre-pandemic level of 2% in July 2024.
I’m in Whitehorse for meetings this week! So excited to check out some local businesses. Grabbed a delicious coffee at The Kind Café this morning while waiting for the sun to grace us with it’s presence.
Higher electricity costs mean small biz' will have fewer resources to create jobs, invest in their biz & contribute to the growth of the local economy. CFIB has written the Sask Rate Review Panel to express concerns over the proposed SaskPower rate hikes.

The cost of doing business is at an all-time high & small businesses are finding it more & more difficult to deal with accumulating credit card fees as consumers shift away from cash payments.
Yellowknife businesses are starting to reopen after nearly a month without any revenue, and while some business owners are excited to welcome back customers, others are apprehensive about the future.
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) and the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses (CFIB) are sounding the alarm on COVID-19 loan repayments and a small business tax hike hitting Saskatchewan in the new year.

SOLBERG: Flurry of new taxes means storm brewing for MB small businesses. With 19% of MB small biz' considering closure, the potential damage to the economy underscores the need for gov'ts to address the concerns of small firms before many more are lost.
Advocates urge Ottawa to extend loan deadline. "If things had returned to ‘normal,’ this wouldn’t have been an issue. However, the lingering effects of COVID & the ongoing recession make me question the realism of the repayment timeline.” - MB biz owner.
