Simple: #upwork is trying to create a better client experience by reducing spam proposals. (I also hire on Upwork and I get a LOT of spam/copy&paste proposals) So the lesson for us freelancers is simple: want to win jobs? Stop spamming. More on what this means tomorrow..

Think of your #Upwork job search as a marketing funnel. Target a specific audience by carefully picking jobs. The first 100 characters of your proposal need to get you a click (i.e. a "view"). The rest of your proposal gets the client to reply. The interview gets the job.

My favorite #Upwork freelancer's title is something like "I speed up slow Wordpress websites". Could he ever do that an as a full-time employee? No way. But on Upwork he always had enough clients. The crazy part: you could learn the basics of speed optimization in a few hours.

Virtually all my clients are coming from @Upwork DMs nowadays, which I love. Usually these clients have already decided to hire me or, at worst, are considering between a few hand-picked freelancers. Interesting change I've noticed in clients since going from $150 to $200/hr.

6 #Upwork invites in 3 days... this is not counting the several DMs in the same time period Are all of them good? Of course not. I rejected 4 of these for various reasons. But: no connects spent on applying & no time spent looking for jobs. This is where Upwork shines.

If you use chatGPT to write your #Upwork proposals or communicate with clients, I highly suggest you then rewrite it in your own language. Even if that means some grammar/spelling mistakes. As a chatGPT user, I can smell AI-written text from a mile away.

A lot of people say not to work as a VA, but I think it's an awesome starting position on #upwork . You can start with basic computer literacy and acquire skills that you can then switch to offering, like email marketing, CRM management, etc. Or just move into project management.

Lots of DMs coming through on #Upwork , but none have converted into a client over the last couple of weeks. The one that did came (surprisingly) from simply applying to a job post. So this is once again for y'all claiming there aren't any good clients on Upwork.

If you interviewed with an #Upwork client and they went with another freelancer, ask politely what the reason was. The feedback they give you could be the reason you win the next job interview. Just don't try to convince them to hire you after they tell you.

"I have X years of experience in..." This says nothing. Did you get better in those years? Were you doing it full-time, or was it a side interest? Years of experience don't always translate to quality of work. It proves nothing and should be a last resort in proposals.

Have an Upwork interview call coming up? Some clients will insist on speaking over video. Others are the opposite. Be prepared for either one. I usually follow their lead. If their camera is off, I keep mine off. If theirs is on, I turn mine on too.

If your #Upwork client has to keep going over your work and reminding you about tasks you missed or errors you made, don't be surprised they don't give you more work and/or leave you a bad review. Your job is to save them time. The more time they have to spend managing you, the

People keep sharing these photos of pristine desks with a monitor, a wireless keyboard, a mouse, some nice headphones, and a tropical paradise in the window outside. My desk is messy beyond belief and gets cleaned maybe once a year. My 27" iMac is 6 years old with a big crack in

If you mess on an #Upwork project (and you will eventually - everyone does at some point), be an adult and don't bury your head in the sand. So many freelancers get scared and pretend it didn't happen, try to dodge responsibility, delay the inevitable discovery, etc. You know,

My #Upwork JSS never dropped below 99%. Here's how to master yours. 🧵 Your JSS is calculated based on client feedback from the past 3, 6, 12, and 24 months. The highest score from all of those is displayed. So how do you fix your JSS if it dropped?

Videos can be a huge boost for your #Upwork client communication and proposals. I use @loom a lot to explain the work done or provide instructions. Sometimes it's great simply to showcase just how complex what you did is. Impressed clients = happy clients.

When a client on #Upwork is reviewing applicants to a job post, the main question they're trying to answer is: "Which of these freelancers can get the job done the way I want it?" You need to PROVE that you're one of those freelancers. Not hint. Not suggest. PROVE. Now let's

"See my #Upwork portfolio for samples." ⚠️ NO⚠️ Clients don't have time to click your profile and look for relevant samples. Easier to skip you. Pick 1-3 samples that are closest to what the client is asking for and attach them + include direct links.

On #Upwork , 60% of success is from your soft skills. Being a pleasure to work with protects you from bad reviews when things go bad. It makes good work look impressive and turns short-term projects into long-term ones. It brings in good reviews & referrals.

Posted a job for a client. Freelancer sends this long list of samples. There are 27 applicants to this job post, I don't have time to wade through tons of samples! Pick one or two, EXPLAIN WHY THEY'RE RELEVANT, include the rest below! Help the client save time! They'll love you.

"There are no more good jobs on #Upwork !" I see this a lot on socials. Definitely not true. We're not living in the 15th century where what your grandparents did, you did, so you could just keep doing the same thing all your life and earn a living. The digital market changes

If you're on an hourly #Upwork contract, do your client a favor and be conservative with how you spend your time. I always try to make sure I'm not doing useless work when on the clock. Or doing work that could be done by a VA for a lot less. I might lose money in the short

Human brains are wired to look at faces. So your #Upwork profile photo does matter. There are two common mistakes I see freelancers make: 1/ Making the face too small. The Upwork profile photo is tiny. If your face doesn't take up most of it, it'll be impossible to see. 2/

If an #Upwork job post mentions some kind of concern - that's the golden ticket for your proposal. Addressing that concern shows you've actually read the post carefully AND that you're the candidate to address that concern. Will share an example of my own soon.

If your #Upwork clients are happy with the work you're doing at your current rate, you can safely increase it 20-30%. A lot of freelancers are afraid of doing this. Just try it. What's the worst that can happen?
