“A woman has said he raped her in high school.”
“This list of 65 women from his high school say he’s great.”
“Wait, why did you have that list?”
“No reason."
Hot take: D&D is the number one TTRPG in the world because of the Open Game License and the community of designers and players this has fostered. Not because it’s the better game, not even because it’s called D&D.
GM tip: listen to your players’ weird theories about what is going on in your game and if any of them sound better than what’s actually going on, just change it
“Critical Role is ruining it for all of us gamers who aren’t beautiful voice actors!”
Is professional basketball also ruining it for people who throw hoops in their driveway? No? Then quit it.
Game of Thrones’ GM went off to college and so Jon’s player took over; resurrected his dead PC as a GMPC, changed his backstory and then went off on some totally weird direction
All the players are now Skyping in
I hear so many stories from people who wanted to get into D&D or some other TTRPG when they were younger but couldn’t because some gatekeeping assrag said it wasn’t for girls or gays or Black folks or who knows what else. I wish it was better now, but it still needs so much work.
1/ The state of the economy right now has lead many of my friends and followers to supplement their income with sites like Patreon, OnlyFans, etc to post modeling sets, cosplay, erotic art/fiction, etc. So here’s a friendly reminder from Twitter dad.
Dungeons and Dragons, and indeed all tabletop roleplaying games, are for everyone. And I will never stop trying to make this point both in my work and in my advocacy.
I’ve been playing D&D since 1981. The “you kids and your 5e are trying to rewrite history with your revisionist nonsense, I was there” take doesn’t work on me. It doesn’t work on anyone.
My 14yo, playing Persona 5 on new game plus: “Dad,
@matthewmercer
is a really good voice actor! Must be all those years of D&D!”
Yeah kid. If only that’s all it takes. 🤣
Twitter keeps asking if I want to follow the topic of Matthew Mercer. Not the actual personal account of
@matthewmercer
but the TOPIC of him. That’s kind of meta.
What’s really funny is a superhero tabletop RPG designer saying how his game doesn’t have any “woke politics” in it, as if he has no idea what superhero comics are like
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is hands down the best of all Spidey movies. I love the recent Tom Holland movies but this animated movie is far and away the most authentic and creative.
2/ folks who sell their pictures, videos, and art are doing legitimate work. They set their own boundaries on what they produce and what content they sell and are usually very up front about it and the terms they’re offering it with.
Boba Fett isn’t white and he doesn’t act white and he’s not coded white you stupid, stupid, stupid people.
I absolutely adore what Tem brings to this character who’s always been a fanboy’s cypher in Star Wars. I love his Boba and how he plays him. Quit putting your BS onto it.
Heaven forbid any new TTRPG use similar game mechanics to an existing one. I’m sure that’s never happened in the history of TTRPG publishing and design.
*checks notes*
Oh sorry it has always happened
I’m sorry but D&D 5e is not a newbie friendly TTRPG and is kind of medium complexity honestly. I am a huge fan and I’ve played it a lot but we’re really pushing the cart before the horse by making it the default system for so many licensed games.
5/ I am sure I don’t have to remind my followers here to:
* always be respectful of the artist
* never steal, appropriate, or share this content without the artist’s consent
* never harass, badger, or abuse the artist in DMs or online or in person
* always remember this is work!
4/ as a consumer it is your choice to pay for this content and your choice whether or not to consume it. It isn’t your choice to dictate to these folks how much they show in photos, what they write about, or which property/fandoms they cosplay.
In 1985, the year that Stranger Things 3 is set, I turned 14 and was not kissing any girls or avoiding monsters, but I was definitely playing a lot of D&D and riding everywhere on my bike.
“D&D had a robust and deadly combat system in the old days because the idea was you as a player would try to avoid combat”
Ha ha ha no, everyone played D&D in the 70s and 80s with combat all the time, what weird alternate revisionist universe are you talking about
This sudden burst of creativity from folks who think *now* is the time to design a TTRPG that will replace D&D is honestly simultaneously refreshing and exhausting.
3/ even those who take commissions or requests are allowed to set these boundaries. Many offer lewds, or certain kinds of situations in fiction, or specific types of cosplay (comics, VG, anime). It’s their choice to set that limit.
Let me tell you about daily life here in New Zealand right now.
Over 90% of us are vaccinated.
We wear masks in all businesses & public places.
We scan QR codes at entrances to places we visit.
We enjoy events & movies.
Hundreds of thousands of us aren’t dying from COVID.
Hey folks I have this idea to improve TTRPGs:
• charge $30/month to play them
• keep you from making up your own stuff unless you pay more
• get rid of independently published third party content
What do you think?
I don’t know if folks remember, but back when 5th edition was coming out, a prominent D&D creator with a huge fanbase released his own major RPG as an alternative. That was Monte Cook, with Numenera, which led to the Cypher System.

Controversial Opinion: Superheroes don't level up. Yes, there's the origin story period, but despite changes in costumes, occasional power changes, and other stuff, they're not really on a power advancement track. This is something I think most supers TTRPGs get wrong.
Okay so I am just going to say this the once.
Are you waiting on a Kickstarter to fulfil for a board game?
Absolutely do not even a little bit be a colossal assrag to the company doing that because the world’s supply lines are on fire.
Thank you.
—Dad
Seriously. Go see
#TheMarvels
in theaters if you’re at all interested in fun superhero adventures with a strong cast. In the spirit of Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: Ragnarok, The Marvels builds on the MCU’s cosmic lore with humor and heart. I loved it. 🌟🌟🌟
You only hurt the TTRPG community by keeping others out of it with bigotry and exclusion and your tired, old ideas of who plays these games and who makes those decisions.
Tabletop is for everyone.
The most interesting take on the D&D movie I’ve seen is from someone who says that they loved it, but wouldn’t use D&D as the game to play out what happened in the movie, they’d use a different system.
Wild.
Dungeons & Dragons is not the easiest or simplest or most intuitive or even the best tabletop rpg to learn how to play TTRPGs but it sure is everywhere
Okay listen. I will only say this once.
You can be mad about property damage from protesting and STILL THINK PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE SHOT TO DEATH.
You can believe in freedom and the right to bear arms and STILL THINK PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE SHOT TO DEATH.
Netflix says their anti-password sharing measures were posted as an error and have removed the rule of subscribers having to verify their home devices every month from their website.
@boymonster
Idk if it's necessarily a 'hustle' because it's 100% free to download... but Combat Wheelchair v3.0.1 for 5e dnd has been out for a while and I have another version in the making in my drafts that will also be free. Planning on adding some more content ✌
“I miss the good old days of D&D, you know, where I was constantly made fun of for being a nerd and felt excluded by society. Oh and when it was okay to call a book Oriental Adventures and make female characters weaker than men because science.”
Oh and also: I am not the boss of you. But do understand that when you say “keep your politics out of my games” to people who say they want to see LGBTQIA+ or BIPOC or disability representation in art or content, they read that as “I don’t want you or your kind in my games.”
“What? They let you play female knights on Pendragon RPG now? What is this SJW woke bullshit?” — some guy on Facebook mad that Bradamante and Aethelfled and Boudicca and Scathach and Britomart and many other women in folklore and history exist
“I miss AD&D it was just so much simpler and easier to understand than this new 5e”
Nope. No it wasn’t. It wasn’t easier or simpler. You just got used to it.
Enough of this nonsense. All editions of D&D have their problems. They all require you to get used to them.
I dunno, I want to see more TTRPG books and supplements that are based on non-Western fantasy or SF to be designed and written by folks who are from those cultures. Can we do that, please? Wouldn’t that just be so much better? And give more work to marginalised creators?
My TTRPG hot take today: Dungeon Masters/Game Masters/Game Moderators/Storytellers all need to get over themselves when it comes to “authority” and being in charge of the game. You’re a player, you just have some different responsibilities. Play, and see what happens.
I love how many women and non-binary folks are playing D&D and other tabletop RPGs by the thousands and thousands because it just shows how utterly wrong and full of crap Gary Gygax was about this subject. RPGs are for everyone. Get over it and get into it.
I have had so many people message me, people I haven't spoken to in ages in some cases, saying "OMG dude did you know
@matthewmercer
liked your tweet and you're on Youtube, you're famous"
Literally, what
Did you know “alpha wolves” aren’t actually a thing? And that therefore dogs don’t need an “alpha” and people aren’t “alphas” and “betas” and if you think that they are, you’re 90% likely to be an assrag?
“But what if I don’t want politics in my games”
You will always have politics in your games. I’m sorry, but even trying to be apolitical is a political choice. So long as you understand that and can accept what that means, play games however you like.
Here is a thing I have noticed.
White Guy: those SJWs always wanting to be mad about something
POC: *explains the issues*
White Guy: well I agree that’s bad but it’s the way they’re objecting to it
POC: *explains why this happens*
White Guy: well have you tried being polite
If anyone ever tells you that online relationships aren’t real or don’t count just tell them my story and how I flew halfway around the world to propose to somebody I met on an online game and now we’ve been together for over 25 years and have two kids
Okay, Twitter Dad here. As many of you know I’ve spent a lot of time on various social media sites and following a lot of new folks, and here’s something I felt needs to be said to a lot of people:
That Instagram girl doesn’t want to date you.
1/
Hi new followers! I don’t always post “controversial” TTRPG think pieces that make some people really defensive about the hobby. But I do believe in everyone getting to play games, have a good time, and not have to deal with a lot of toxic nonsense.

Posting this for accountability.
I need to quit drinking.
Alcohol doesn’t do anything positive for me and at my age all it’s doing is wrecking my guts.
I don’t have any excuses. I can drink water or soft drinks or tea or coffee.
No shame or judgment on anyone else.
💜 Dad
GOP: *takes huge dump on country*
Democrats: *arrives*
GOP: “look at this huge pile of crap, Democrats! Disgusting! What are you going to do about it?”
If you’re shocked that somebody who becomes widely known for his work on D&D is now, with this recent WotC pre-OneD&D fracas, announcing his own alternative to D&D and talking about a new wave or a renaissance, then you haven’t been paying attention to history.
2/2
This is just such a completely self-inflicted career-ending mistake. I just can’t even understand why these guys did this other than because they were in terrible debt, broke, or otherwise in crisis.
D&D’s combat system is really, really good at authentically replicating a D&D fight but not very good at replicating any other kind of fight. I think we tend to just accept that it’s a D&D fight and play around that like it’s a given.
Hot gaming take: I don’t think any TTRPG GM is a “storyteller”. They aren’t telling a story, they’re setting one up. The story happens through play and is what you remember afterward. I don’t want the GM to tell me a story; if I wanted that I’d watch a play.
This made so many people mad. Folks, I run a weekly D&D game for newbies and we have a really great time. I don’t think the game needs you to defend it from me. 🙏🏻
Dungeons & Dragons is not the easiest or simplest or most intuitive or even the best tabletop rpg to learn how to play TTRPGs but it sure is everywhere
Hey if you’re playing The One Ring don’t forget it’s totally cool to have your elf or dwarf or hobbit not be white. Thanks Rings of Power!
And screw you, racist Tolkien “purists”. It’s a fantasy world, get over it.
HIRE AN EDITOR.
Last time I said this, somebody raked me over the Twitter coals for being classist or a tool of capitalism or ignorant of the poor indie designers but we’re talking about KICKSTARTERS who clearly should budget for editors AND proof-readers, yeah?
Did it hurt? When you assembled a list of people and companies by color according to how they treat others, and it backfired? And still nobody knows who you are?
And it’s always “I’ve been gaming for decades” Yeah, me too, buddy! Since 1981! And I personally never had any issues playing or getting into groups! Doesn’t mean it was great for everyone.
I’m weird in that solving puzzles and doing escape rooms is not my idea of a good time. If a D&D session is all about a clever rebus or a riddle or a series of sliding panels in sequences, my brain tunes the hell out. I’m like, can I just roll to see if my 18 INT solves this plz
I mean this sincerely and honestly.
TTRPG creators, writers, designers, editors and artists deserve to exist in a pay scale comparable to actors and producers of actual play streams.
And vice versa.
