Mary McLeod Bethune, born in this log cabin on July 10, 1875 in Mayesville, SC to former slaves, eventually founded Bethune-Cookman University. She was the 15th of 17 kids and the only child in her family to attend school. To get to and from school, she walked 5 miles everyday!
