I have had many papers rejected because they’re in
#Colombia
and the editors/reviewers think it’s “too local” or “not global enough”. Yet the “Global South” is where research and training is needed the most (at least in my field!)😖😣.

This shows that for women the leaky pipeline continues even after getting tenure. If the academic system does not change, I don’t know how it will be sustainable. Academic jobs seem designed for individuals with a stay at home partner, intergenerational wealth, and workaholism 😒
Women leave academia at higher rates than men at every career stage, and attrition is especially high among three groups: tenured faculty, women in non-STEM fields, and women employed at less prestigious institutions, according to a new analysis.
The housing crisis in
#SantaCruz
doesn’t only affect our personal lives, but also our professional lives. I will be left with no PhD students this coming year because they don’t want to come to
@ucsc
given the housing costs. This is not sustainable 😖😣
“Thinking time” is now a luxury, one we seldom have because we are burdened with service, unrealistic research expectations, among many other time-sinks. I do think the quality of our overall science is decreasing due to the pace at which we have to “produce” 😣
My human experience has peaked 💥 after having seen gorilas in the wild. Looking into their eyes and seeing them go about their lives from up close was life changing 🖤🦍. Also hurray for conservation 😊

Short 🧵: I haven’t let academia force me to decide between having a (functional) family and a career, but it hasn’t been easy and I wonder daily if I’ll “make it” or if my kids will resent me for my work. And I know academic mothers (and fathers) feel the same on a daily basis…

This is very important. Zero-deforestation palm oil should not expand on natural grassland ecosystems. There is enough degraded area where it could be grown. We must stop the forest bias and conserve all ecosystems 🌾 (best I could find for grassland)

I would say one of the biggest problems with trying to diversify academia is that the current majority are convinced that they are fair evaluators. I cringe when I hear them talk confidently about their lack of bias. If you don't see a problem, you won't try to fix it 😕

Just reading the acknowledgement section of an undergrad thesis for which I was the main advisor and a male colleague was the co-advisor. It says “I thank (female author name), and Professor (male author name)..”. I am also a professor. These are subtle, but sexist actions 🙁
Underrepresented minority faculty in the USA get 7% more negative votes and 44% fewer unanimous votes during tenure and promotion cases 😓. And it’s worse for URM women. But this can be mitigated by strong reference letters - let’s write strong letters 🙌🏽
