the use of colour. the similar one arm outward but she's picking up denji's peace sign instead. the city walls widen out, the frame feels less claustrophobic, the buildings are now in the distance...
she's so operating at such levels of projection its hilarious. says this & 2 seconds later she tries the cigarette (her break from character/an absorption of what aki narratively is/masculinity-her imagined csm) & then sits there coughing up Phlegm too. absolutely miserable woman

csm 140 tbh rlly does set up the structure of sexual abuse & violence perpetrated by adults onto children, encoded into institution (the church) through Marriage — process central to this exploitation, later interestingly gendered in how eyepatch talks about his wife.

1. the framing of this as comedic is also so interesting. this sense of disconnect/seperation; the prev chapter where we're witness to denji's own jarr w. how the others handle the normalcy of death/warzone. here the jarr is redirected to how we percieve denji,

1. presentation of physical intimacy
thinking about the rain as metaphorical device which triggers this aggressive perversion of asa's ideal romance (as seen in her poetry) by yoru is especially interesting in light of this chapter.
hi! here's a short chainsaw man character assignment quiz which i had a LOT of fun making; i hope you like it too!

girl makima fucking wrote the story. she sat down at a desk and pulled out a list of themes & metaphors and marked out denji's character development points in pretty red ink. it's true. idk what else to tell you.
the casual fit hits so hard... warm shapeless jacket. she killed aki. she is exactly the kind of soft denji craves. my fav genre of makima is her genuine scariness placed in terrifying proximity to the idealised everyday. this is why she's at her most horrifying in the date fit.
this is one of my favourite panels of makima.
the sun shining through the door of the warehouse forming the silhouette of a halo. she's so golden, so radiant compared to the griminess of the rest of the chapter, like a messiah rescuing denji from his circumstance.
#csm171
the location from which it emerges being the stomach is clearly referencing a kind of umbilical cord.. this when considered with the birthgiving motifs hinted at in the last chapter [qrt] goes quite hard.
#csm170
"power to erase devil names from existence itself" is something both makima & barem want to purpose: a device for editing core narrative, creating & destroying conceptual fabric, an instrument of life & death. the comparison to motherhood (giving birth) seems significant.
yay! i'm curious to see how they'll adapt some of hgsn's stylistic choices; these moments hit so hard with the panelling as it is.
it'd sure be very different translated into a new medium, i'm very excited.
"The Summer Hikaru Died" (Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu) Horror Mystery Suspense Manga by Mokumokuren will be getting an ANIME ADAPTATION, scheduled for 2025.
makima stood at the entrance to that alleyway, the frame of the door, at the end of the bomb devil arc & talked about liking the country mouse. i'm really feeling normal about this.
@FRUlTGUMMlEZ
this!! & then ofc it darkens any & all trans interpretations one may have abt csm's hybrids too. immortality -> the unchanging body is a theme even in a few oneshots. the static, unhistoried, enduring, appropriated => fjmt tells us all the way back in FP why this is horrifying.
#csm157
this panel is absurd but it's also interesting how these aren't generic funds. specific reference to education (affirmed by how denji chooses to raise nayuta) / literally burning away her own outside-war possibility with war mimicking imagery

in light of the yoshida inside cover, i've decided to write up a few thoughts i had regarding recurring themes in the chainsaw man inside covers [thread].

redoing this but omg! hit tweet. um. you should follow me i'm new to twt & think about csm/write analysis. also look at this horrid denreze roleswap fic i wrote. target audience. you want to see makima being terrible and the worst so so bad:
"i'll bear your sins with you." it is genuinely very difficult for me to discount denji's empathy when all of p1's end is based on how his love for makima, after all she did to him, manifests in understanding.
this is also why nayuta & denji's relationship makes my heart hurt.
this panel with fumiko especially hurts because this event, the chainsaw man, is a location of grief and loss for denji too. and he associates things like aki's death with his identity as the CSM but simultaneously is told that no: the family & the starter are different sides,

analysis (🧵)
the Bird metaphor's back again! alongside more callbacks.
-
very interesting that kiga's summon when asa Trips is a bird. from the very first chapter of part one, war's been regarded as a bird. asa's guilt over killing bucky (also by Tripping)
u ppl's obsession with criticising artists needs to be studied. ur reading pieces people publish for free. it isn't professional work. 1/2 the time it's by an amateur writer trying to express their love for a series. & the sentiment here is "they need to be brought down a peg"?

i'm going to be sick. hard as fuck panel and -- the horror of this, the grim absurdity of it, the way denji leans into that feeling, wants that feeling, he's grinning, don't you see, under the metal of the chainsaw:
+
this panel . . . her reiterating reze's disabling of denji, yet so much closer, tighter. smoothing away reze's disruption of her Narrative. the last version of hand holding in the bomb devil arc, the parody of the intimate hug from the movie date. she is so, so awfully gentle.
What is everyone’s favorite panels of Makima? This is mine, for both the art and story relevance, but I also love the “say you’ll make a contract” panel. I want to know because I’m going to pick a few images to put in picture frames :]
#csm158
with the chapter title referring to a "guillotine" i took the time to do a little research. observe the first image.
you know who's a Teen who is effectively an apparatus that Carries Out Executions & also Beheads Herself? thats Right. this is how REZE can still return❗️
#csm172
thinking about barem, the self proclaimed CSM fan, wanting to see fights & the gruesomeness on page. thinking about how this violence is what his provoking leads to & how denji's eating chips away at the body parts of Asa, the protagonist. diminishing her...

[short 🧵]
love how so much of this arc's been invoking the theme of the dead lover & simultaneously problematising patriarchal control. both quanxi & eyepatch [i'm sure the accessory too is a deliberate similarity] operate on this basis.
i don't think setting up expectations for a trans mc in a mainstream manga is tenable at all lmao but i find it funny how many people are resistant to this interpretation, considering how trans readings have *always* augmented the csm experience. gender is at its core!

one thing that this chapter confirms for us is that the thing held over the hybrids' heads *isn't* death/the surgery, per se. there's an implication that they still don't have autonomy: "dream of freedom" but the threat here refers to a composite of their desires.
reze csm (every character you think of is Actually reze csm) forever inscribed ft. my dubious drawing skill in the corner of my polsci notebook. this may be my most banger post yet

1. it's genuinely fascinating how these two instances mirror each other. when denji eats makima at the end of part one, it's lingered on, savoured, deliberate. the eating of sushi before nayuta appears is hurried, involuntary, painful.
reze fans please share with me your favourite reze moments!
personally i really like this scene in chapter 44. it's morbid & raw & a little sad. horrifying too. -- perhaps the first time you see her in her entirety without The facade.
whose dream is it now? whose body? not the boy's, not the woman's, not the dog's. it's made into piecemeal by the state and stripped into bits by its fans... & you understand her now, right? all that she was trying into breathe into the chainsaw? all she didnt have?
so very normal about this Specific combination of panel forever and ever and ever.... do you see it? the transplanting? the bloody dissection of pochita and denji moving into denji and makima? death and rebirth? pochita and the chainsaw man, makima and nayuta???
a good friend of mine'd mentioned how these two pages play off each other. the ideal girl during the movie date v the raw horror of the train scene... mkm Presented and Unpresented by her proximity to denji. her as the soft love interest, her performance of Woman.
the "fictional women are too badly written for me to like" arg is so funny to me because i start realising my miserable coping re: making up character for misogynistically written shounen heroines from ages 10 to 14 wasn't universal & god how blissful Not Doing that must've been.
they cancelled the reze movie because they saw me being happy about it and if there is one thing tatsuki fujimoto cannot allow me it is happiness. thus is the life of a reze coper
@Cripshaw1
tbh dissecting a teenage boy & facing down a war party made up of a few grumpy schoolkids and a married couple must be relatively pleasant when compared to monday mornings in ER
this is how part 2 starts off too; the schoolteacher being a child predator, his abuse of the prez colouring the justice devil's transformation.
& this commentary aligns itself around the contours of misogyny with how asa is treated by barem.
yay people are talking about gender re: asa & denji on the tl so uhh here's an exchange on an old post of mine that you can link to my discussion of the active/passive in my metas
[not sure if i migrated my para on tripping here? anyway] <3
it is really quite interesting to me that we see nayuta in a field, buildings in distance. a departure from the city//forest landscape laid down to us with the earlier patterns in the covers (qrt) & the inside covers (analysis 🔗 link in replies).
