My folks and I just stepped up from tenant farmers to yeoman farmers with 150 acres of beautiful Herefordshire farmland. Majestic mature trees, spring fed ponds, miles of hedge separating fields unchanged since a map from 1885. Mid tier & organic conversion begin 01/01/21

It's tough. I totally share the pain and frustration other farmers are expressing. I understand the need to "stick together" but just don't agree with many issues and solutions they are voicing. Probably tougher than when it was media vs farmers. Anyone else feeling the same?

@herefordgolf @HertsFarmer @Nigelrefowens Actually the U.K. deforested fairly early with a lot of the wood being used in ship building, house building and industry. The lowest tress cover was during the industrial revolution. Tree cover now is actually increasing and back up to a level it was at the Norman conquest.

@DaveThroup If solar panels were mandatory on every new build residential, commercial and industrial building, better grants to retrofit and all car parks covered with panels as happening in France paired with battery storage we wouldn’t need to use so much land…

@Rob_Percival_ I find it interesting that photos with the articles usually depict happily grazing livestock. Bird flu, swine flu outbreaks are likely a result of this intensive production units and dairy is fast moving in the same direction. Almost inevitable.

@PhilLatham @denny_robert @sheepfarmergirl I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Wrong job. Wrong time. Wrong place. This will make flooding worse, not better. And if you had any concept of how delicate an ecosystem the Lugg is, you’d know that it will take longer than 6 months to fix.

@BenGoldsmith @OliverDowding Oh to inherit nearly 3000 acres that could be turned into a posh safari park. Not viable for most. Grade 3 is plenty productive and many opportunities for balancing nature restoration and regenerative food production.

Not in the UK they don’t. Misleading representation of implying global stats = UK stats. UK agriculture accounts for 10% of GHG emissions. Transport 27%.

@benpattinson1 @FarmersWeekly That stretch of river hasn't seen flooding close to 2019-2020 levels because we haven't had rainfall in the catchment close to 2019-2020 levels. The site still looks fucking awful and barren too.

@denny_robert @PhilLatham @sheepfarmergirl Cover crops and grass buffer strips to prevent soil run off from fields, more upland woodland. Reinstating peatlands. Blocking hill drainage ditches. All about slowing the flow - not speeding it up.

@farmerbiff @agricontract @DefraGovUK They haven’t. If the crop needs the nutrients it you still can. It’s to stop people chucking it on as a means of disposal rather than applying it where it’s needed.
