We don’t have “Jr Church.” We don’t have VBS. We average around 100-110 people on a Sunday morning in rural/semi-rural Maine. 50+% are children. Don’t believe the lie that you need programs to get young families to come to your church.

When I came to my church in 2014, as interim, we sang (in worship) MercyMe’s hit “Shake” in my first service. Tonight, our Chief Musician laid out the reasoning/background for the hymnals we are buying containing Psalms and hymns. Revitalization is possible, brothers. Plod.

I would encourage men waiting to enter ministry to go slow. Pastoral leadership is heavy. You need thick skin/broad shoulders. While waiting, go on/to as many pastoral visits/elder meetings as allowed. Books are great, but boots on the ground ministry is where the action is.

My father-in-law is a pastor. He just walked out of our home (they live with us) to confront a sheep who gets off work late. My point is that your pastor, whoever he his, does a lot more than you’ll ever know. Late nights. Hard conversations. Pray for your God-given shepherds.

Our congregation has 68 members. From unborn to 18, there are 73 children. We joke that you have to watch your step coming to church, but there is truth in jest. We do not have Jr Church, VBS, or Awana. The point: you don't have to do all the "things" to have lots of kids.

Observation: While modern pastors are more educated (Mdiv.+), our people have become less biblically literate. Pastoral training has been removed from the local church, thus removing heavy biblical/doctrinal conversation/teaching from the church, resulting in biblical frailty.
