Just on an institutional level, having married priests in the Western church would probably be a disaster. The East has an institutionalized reverence for monasticism that the West does not have. W/o this a married Catholic clergy would just become Protestant pastors.

The ethos of Roman Catholicism is basically slacking off. As in, "What's the minimum I have to do & what can I get away with?" Low Masses or liturgy w/o music is the result of this in worship: chanting & music are hard, & we don't strictly need them, so we don't have them.

I think an unspoken assumption among some Catholics isn't that, if the Catholic Church is wrong, another church must be right. It's that, if the RCC is wrong, then Christianity itself must be wrong. Often in the game of truth, you don't win by attrition.
