Between 2018 & 2022, imports from Tanzania into Kenya have grown 200%, while exports have grown 91%. Uganda's trade deficit with Kenya has widened by over 5 times over the same period. In 2022, Kenya exported Kshs. 40bn goods to Rwanda, but imported just Kshs. 3.6bn. 1/2

Matatu PSV licenses issued peaked in 2019 at 47,183, up 5 times from 2013. Mini-bus & bus PSV licenses issued hit NEW RECORDS in 2021, with mini-bus licenses up 327% from 2,790 in 2011 to 11,919 in 2021. Going forward, there is likely to be a trend towards ELECTRIC buses.

Maize prices have DOUBLED from Kshs. 39.7 per kg in 2021 to Kshs. 76.1 in 2022. Beans up 28%, finger millet up 12%, sorghum up 31%, bananas up 31%, all at record highs. Interestingly, price of potatoes & tomatoes still lower than 2019 & cabbage actually decreased year on year.

In 2021, Kenya imported 468,525 tonnes of maize worth Kshs. 13.7 billion & exported just 5,127 tonnes worth Kshs. 642.8 million. 2017 was definitely a hefty year with maize imports hitting 1.3 million tonnes worth Kshs. 40 billion.

Central Bank Governor Dr. Njoroge had two choices: 1. Let the Shilling act as a shock absorber & slide perilously (also kill interbank trading) 2. Jack up rates & slow down the economy, taking down tax revenue The Govrnr opted for 1., & now economy is grinding to halt anyway.

Kenya's cement production has surged 106% from 4.478 million tonnes in 2011 to 9.248 million tonnes in 2021. Exports to Uganda & Tanzania have collapsed, with 2021 quantity being just 5% of 583,100 tonnes exported in 2011. Some have blamed government crackdown on "ghost exports"

Maize in Kenya (a THREAD): Total land area under maize production is estimated at around 1.5 million hectares. Annual production is around 3 million metric tons, giving a national yield of 2 metric tons per hectare. However, highland yields are often 2-4 times better.

IMF debt is just about 5% of Kenya's total external debt. However, the Fund's disbursements are highly conditional on unpopular policies. China is Kenya's 3rd largest lender, making up 19.37% of total external debt. There is significant market sensitive debt on Kenya's books.

Tea in Kenya (THREAD): The first tea seedlings in Kenya were introduced by white settlers in Limuru in 1903. Some of these tea bushes form part of Unilever’s Mabroukie Tea Estate today. Commercial cultivation of tea started in 1924 nd was exclusive to the whites until 1956.

Between 2011 & 2022, wheat production peaked in 2020 at 405k tonnes (+282% from 2011), while imports peaked at 2m tonnes in 2019 (+100% from 2011). The ratio of production to imports is improving. In 2022, production + imports fell to lowest since 2016, on drought & shortages.

Kenya's EPZ enterprises operating have grown 84% from 79 in 2011 to 145 in 2021. Over the same period, number of EPZ workers employed have grown 105% to 66,654 & export sales have surged 134% to Kshs. 91.3 bn. EPZ export sales per EPZ worker is a mind-blowing Kshs. 1.37 million

It is unwise to overburden formal workers with more taxes. Formal sector employment has risen by 45% from 2.08m in 2011 to 3.02m in 2022. The share of public sector employment in formal employment is 31%. The ratio of formal to informal employment is 0.19 (2017: 0.21).

Between 2011 & 2021, MGR freight volumes down 60% from 1.596m tonnes to 644k tonnes. MGR passenger journeys down by 25%. It is notable that combined passenger journeys in 2021 on both the MGR & SGR were similar to 2011 levels on MGR alone. SGR freight hit 5.4m tonnes in 2021.

GDP at market prices has grown from KES. 3.7 trillion in 2011 to KES. 13.4 trillion in 2022. Over the same period, the trade & current account deficit have DOUBLED. Broad money to GDP has fallen from 41% to 38%, while total domestic credit improved from 41% to 47%.

The Jubilee Regime spent about Kshs. 938 billion on roads development. This dispels a popular myth that most of the Kshs. 7 trillion+ that they borrowed went into building roads. Total expenditure on roads was just over Kshs. 200 billion in FY21/22.

Domestic aircraft take-offs hit a peak in 2018, up 33% from 86,870 in 2014 to 115,435 in 2018. Since then, they've CRASHED 29% to 82,275 in 2021. International aircraft take-offs have been WORRYINGLY FLAT between 2014 & 2019, before HALVING during Covid.

Kenya's stone, sand & gravel exports have rocketed 304% from 45,460 tonnes in 2014 to 183,779 tonnes in 2021. The value of these 183,779 tonnes exported in 2021 was just Kshs. 1.056 billion. Is is it worth the environmental impact?

It is DISSAPOINTING & WORRYING to note that Kenya's fish exports have not regained to date the 2014 quantity of 15,213 tonnes & value of Kshs. 4.3 billion. In 2021, fish exports rose 29% from 2020 to 10,875 tonnes.

Homicides in Kenya are up 24% from 2,641 in 2011 to 3,281 in 2021. Overall crimes are up by a lesser 7% over the same period. The pandemic resulted in a noticeable dip in crime. The largest share of crime is taken up by "other offences against persons" (eg. Assault) at 27.5%.

At the Devki factory launch, there was a lot of talk of protectionist policies. Protectionism can disadvantage some players in the industry, to the advantage of others. Govment needs to be careful on policies like banning coal imports just because "Kitui has more than enough".

During the 2019 census, 463,262 non-Kenyans were identified. The highest share of non-Kenyans by country were Ugandans, at 20.7%, followed by South Sudanese at 13.57%. Overall, East Africans trumped Other Africans. Asians were the largest non-African group at 9.27% (42,972).

Kenya's cement production has risen by 118% from 4.48 million tonnes in 2011 to 9.75 million tonnes in 2022. However, exports to UG nd TZ in 2022 were just 1/10th of what they were in 2011 and even 2014. On the positive side, exports to other countries hit a new high in 2022.

Kenya's cooking oil production is up 84% from 138,800 tonnes in 2011 to 254,900 in 2021 (2021 was lower than 2020 & even 2019, probably due to dollar shortage). Edible fats & margarine production has increased by just 18% from 234,600 tonnes in 2011 to 275,700 tonnes in 2021.

Kenya has now become a supplier of suppliers. In the past, we had to import billets from China & Vietnam. Now, local steel factories are buying thousands of tons of home-made billets & Kenya is gradually on the path to becoming a big exporter of billets.

Covid-19 pandemic further worsened the case backlog in Kenya Judiciary & access to justice impacted from online system due to unequal access. Pending cases up 27% from 533,350 in 2016/17 to 679,597 in 2020/21. CJ has instructed Magistrates Courts to conclude cases in 3 years.

Since 2018, growth in wages within the construction industry is lagging inflation. Most affected are skilled workers. Between 2011 and 2022, basic average wages for unskilled workers in the construction industry have more than doubled to KSh 27,585.

The government has been keen to have vehicles locally assembled by adopting suggested incentives. Vehicles assembled peaked in 2015 at 10,181 units, only recovering to near-highs in 2021 at 9,989 units. Top assemblers are Isuzu, DT Dobie, CFAO Motors & Simba Corp (BDaily).
