you might not know this about me, but despite being a white boy I’m actually Yolŋu! one of my grandfathers designed a flag during the (ultimately successful) Yolŋu struggle for Sea Rights in the 2000s. I’ve annotated it w/ additional symbolism he told me but not mentioned online.

Young brains are designed to learn language, but that changes as they grow. If you impoverish them early on with bad stimuli, gibberish remixes of Cotton Eye Joe will be their mother tongue. If you raise them on Derry Girls, they’ll pick up an Irish accent. They’re wired for it.

To be clear, I am not suggesting you should raise your children on Irish tv in order to give them an Irish accent, but it can happen. It’s somewhat common for non-American Anglophone children to pick up American accents from imported American tv and movies.

Point is that the stimulus they receive during this critical period is really important. Speak with them and read to them even if they can’t understand, in as many languages as you speak. Hell, you can play them foreign language cartoons even. They’ll be better off for it.

actually reading the Magna Carta is eye-opening if you've been raised hearing about the mythologized liberal progression of history, which begins with the Carta, then the Decl. of the Rights of Man., then the US Con. but you read it and it's just "you can't tax barons as much".

Lexicons aren’t like loadouts, if you’re exposed to the right stimulus at the right age there’s no limit to how many languages you can become fluent in. And not only does having a large or multilingual lexicon create opportunities for your child, it’s better for their brain too.
