I take A LOT of long train journeys, and I’m sick of the single-use plastic cups when I treat myself to gin or wine on the way home. So I have bought myself an Edwardian silver-plated collapsible cup with a gilt wash interior. Antiques are green, and look cooler & luxurious too!
Delighted with my 1930s Hartley Wood glass vase bought today. Not the rainbow of colours I would ideally want, but a good replacement for the ones I regret selling in the past…
My first ‘Antiques Roadtrip’ airs next week!! Join Roo Irvine and me as we tour Scotland in our 1970s Triumph Stag. Spectacular landscapes, amazing antiques and dealers, thrilling auctions, laughs, and more. Watch us from Monday 3rd to Friday 7th October 2022 on BBC1 at 3.45pm 🚙
Frilly, enamelled, striped, whatever. A weakness of mine is Victorian glass. I can’t resist, but everyone says it’s hideous and out of fashion. All that work a century or so ago, for often only a few pounds today. Curious, colourful, often complex, and sometimes camp. I love it!
I’ve never been a military type even if I appreciate what they do. I loved learning how WWII changed women’s fashions and women in work when I visited

I also got to wear a perfectly-fitted 2nd Lieutenants uniform!
It’s this week! Tune in to BBCOne at 15.45 each day to follow the gorgeous Izzie Balmer and me as we road trip in a vintage 1980s Lotus Excel from West Wales to Hertfordshire via Gloucester and Oxford!

And that’s a wrap!!
My fourth Antiques Road Trip has come to an end. And what amazing fun the delightful Margie Cooper and I had!!
Hundreds of miles travelled, 50 fascinating and fabulous things bought and sold between us, and plennnty of giggles had along the way! 🤩
Tune in
I must echo Irita. We got in a classic car together not knowing each other at all. After laughter, teasing, competitiveness, and so much fun - and good buys and bad - we got back out as dear friends. Thank you, Irita, for being you and being so fab. And for an amazing Roadtrip! X
The start a big new adventure! I’ve opened a shop at the amazing
@PantilesArcade

@KnowlesEric
and
@ScottishAntique
.
Honoured and thrilled!
Expect colour, quality, fine design, expertise - and a warm welcome.
A new year! And I’m standing at a crossroads. A late night ponder accompanied by Michael Nyman music and a cognac in a glass made c1760 made me think.
How many stories has this glass heard?
How much gossip?
How many scandals has it witnessed?
How many pledges have been made
My mother always loved fresh flowers. So I have them in our home all the time. This is £5 worth from a supermarket. My mother would have been slightly horrified by the source, but it’s £5 of joy and love. And smiles of remembrance. Also...guess the vases!! 😊
When your jacket matches your car..!
Vintage 1970s polyester, by Irvine Sellars, bought for £30 at a vintage market years ago!
Irvine Sellar was a fascinating and successful man whose eponymous and ‘Mates’ fashion stores became part of the fabric of Swinging 60s fashion.
And so my first Antiques Road Trip is over! Thank you - so much - Roo! The perfect friend and roadtrip companion! We had loads of fun!
Catch up on our Scottish Antiques Road Trip on BBC iPlayer -
Back off up to lovely Yorkshire for more filming for an all new Antiques Roadtrip! Exciting! What treasures will we find?! 🤩🎥
Lovely (nearly) empty carriage means a happy Mark!!
Forlorn, left behind and lost! This bunny stared at me from a window of an always closed antiques shop in the depths of Berlin.
The shop really is always closed, but one day the bunny just appeared, the only change in the dark shop window for years. I first spotted it in chilly

Perfect Christmas gift! My partner knows me so well.
Waiting for me under the tree yesterday was this late Victorian travelling set - perfect for all the many train and plane journeys I take each year. I can’t BEAR single use plastic cups or cutlery, which are terrible for the
I’m delighted to announce that I have joined the BBC Antiques Roadtrip team!
It’s fast, fab fun with my friend Roo Irvine (

It’s nearly over already, booo!! My Roadtrip with my dear friend, the effervescent and sparkling (and terrifyingly good) Izzie Balmer, has wended its way from Cardigan in West Wales through Gloucestershire and now into Oxfordshire. Despite my dodgy map-reading skills!
There
It was my first. And it was fast and fabulous fun! Early last year, I embarked on my first Antiques Roadtrip, and I had a ball. Top team, stunning Scottish scenery, a super Stag, profits and losses a-plenty, and even a wee kilt at the end!
And, of course,
@RooIrvine
, my
Thank you to my wonderful boyfriend for a truly amazing birthday weekend in Prague. Glass, history, cocktails, culture, great food, dear friends…. What more could a boy want?!
I'm excited to announce that I am opening a new shop next week! And it'll be packed with midcentury modern glass, ceramics, art and much much more, with prices starting at £75. I'm also giving two fun, informal lectures. Click here to find out more!
A late 18th century Georgian oak lowboy with solid brass handles. Ideal as a desk, dressing table, occasional table, whatever table. A nice small size, perfect for today’s smaller homes and apartments.
Not at all ‘fine furniture’, but utterly charming, sturdy, and very much of
A studio glass vase by either Ed Iglehart or Tom Young. Both worked in Scotland - American born Iglehart (b.1941) worked in Palnackie, and Young (1937-2023) worked for educational and medical institutions before founding his own studio in Bridge of Allan in 1979. This finely
Good things come in pairs. Eventually. Seven years ago I bought one of these complexly made Victorian cased, hot-worked, gilded and enamelled glass candlesticks for £3. Last week, a matching one popped up on eBay for a bit more. Good things also come to those who wait!
Self-gifting. Couldn’t resist this diminutive 10cm high French Art Nouveau cabinet vase. Hand-potted, form and high-fire glaze inspired by Chinese ceramics, silver electrotype overlay then hand-engraved inspired by Japanese and (mainly) French decorative arts, and over a century
I love antique teddy bears! And the more loved and time-worn, the better!!
My heart skipped a beat when I encountered this smart centenarian in a junk shop in Berlin. I had to add him to my collection of battered, balding but beautiful bears.
And, yes, he is a Steiff, and he
Who will be left grinning, and who will look horrified after the third day’s hunt and auction on my Antiques Road Trip with

The
@decorativefair
is as wonderful as ever and open all this weekend. The first of my ‘Objects of the Fair’ is this fantastic quality micro-mosaic box, the very, very best I have seen, at Lovedays Antiques. Italian, c1810, mounted in gold on a Jasper box, with a custom made
New stock about to go to
@PantilesArcade
😃 In this case some
monumental and fabulously finely blown 1980s lampworked display goblets from my private collection.
A Yorkshire Moors antique shop from before the before times. Ramshackle, friendly, every view entirely new. Shimmying past Victorian furniture, lifting, looking, lighting with my iPhone torch, a little treasure - a Loetz Art Nouveau iridescent vase. Antiquing like it used to be!
This evening, a total chance encounter with one of my heroes. Before the internet, before gay sections in bookshops, there was pretty much only Tales Of The City by
@ArmisteadMaupin
- this man’s writing helped my teenage self beyond description. And, to boot, he’s fab and lovely!
Stupefyingly, nay eye-wateringly, rare!
A 1960s Ruscha shape 816/1 vase in a great decor. Rare form by Kurt Tschörner and rare decor by Otto Gerharz. This one’s a keeper.
Just about to board this
@British_Airways
flight to fly off to the States for a meeting which, if everything works out (and there’s a long way to go), has the potential to change my life! Scary, but super exciting! You never know until you try...
P.S.; Nope, can’t say any more!
Found! While my bf did his kitchen thing on Xmas Eve, I looked up the monogram on this glass I bought on our summer hols. It’s Wilhelm I’s monogram, making it a part of the personal suite of glass used while he was still King of Prussia. I’ll be drinking port out of that baby!
I love early studio glass from the 1960s & 70s, like this Pauline Solven bowl from around 1970. One of the legendary Sam Herman’s first pupils, she preferred to work alone. I’m lucky that one day, years ago, she let me watch her working. Amazing! Under-rated and a name to watch.
Well spotted for those of you that did! The answer to yesterday’s question is this late 19thC Victorian glass vase, made in Stourbridge or Bohemia, and kinda Jack-In-The-Pulpit in form. Over a century old for £7.50!
We’re back! Antiques Roadshow returns to BBC1 at 7pm tonight. I’m first up, with an amazing find rescued from fire.
We were at Portchester Castle, and here I am with my lovely colleagues Hilary Kay & Ronnie Archer-Morgan. It was a great day - tune in to see what we found!
Browsing the amazing Wembley Antiques Market this week, I chanced upon this souvenir pin from HM The Queen’s coronation in 1953. I’d never seen this one before - and, it seems, nor has anyone else. A super lucky, super rare find in Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee year! ☺️ 👑
New to me late 1960s Sekonda 17 jewel mechanical watch, made at the Soviet Raketa Watch Factory. £5, plus quick exterior clean and a new £12 strap from Amazon. Wound it up and it keeps time perfectly!!
First dose. So grateful. The development and roll-out are both truly awesome achievements. Thank you to everyone involved. It almost bought a tear to my eye. The light at the end of the tunnel draws closer.
Today’s charity shop purchase! Hardly a hot topic and made somewhat by apps, but I couldn’t leave it behind for a fiver! Dates from 1910 or so, making it a century or so old - and it still works, judging by today in our changeable ‘Summer’ so far!!
Some things are too cheap. Like this 17thC engraving I found. Hand-printed in 1686 by Dutch engraver Michael Burghers for Robert Plot’s ‘Natural History of Staffordshire’, it shows Prestwood House, seat of the Foley family. Large, superbly detailed and 336 years old. All for £12.
Note to self. Always practise what I preach and pay attention to the size listed online. My ‘just one extra little bit as they can shove it in the same box’ purchase turned out rather larger than I thought!! It barely fits in the sink for a wash!
My find in the local antiques shop after my lecture to the very friendly folks
@TheArtsSociety_
Stirling & Forth Valley…..a lovely and very colourful piece of Ed Iglehart studio glass ☺️
The tribute to Judith Miller on tonight’s
@BBC_ARoadshow
was beautiful and moving. A dear friend of mine, she will be missed by so many. Twitter’s limitations didn’t allow me to write properly here after her passing over Easter, so I did on Instagram.
I’ve not seen a Doulton Lambeth stoneware vase quite like this before. Art Nouveau is go!!! Will look the marks up later. I also love the old note inside!!
On my government-sanctioned exercise walk to buy food this weekend, I saved these three ace brooms from the skip while a shop was being cleared out. (Yes, I did ask permission first!) Great for the sweeping the decking! Or riding around on!
Is this an example of the earliest commercial range of iridescent glass made? Probably dating from the late 1870s, it predates the iridescent work of Loetz & Tiffany by well over a decade. Read about who made it, why, and the rest of the story on my blog -
A mystery of ages possibly solved today. I bought this studio glass vase for $30 or so many, many years ago on a holiday road trip across America. I could never decipher, let alone read, the signature.
It sits at the back of a shelf and I look at it once every few years or so.
The Chalice is one of Mdina Glass’ most celebrated forms. Designed by Michael Harris and Ettore & Vicente Boffo, and made up of five individual pieces, it was introduced in 1969. The Boffo brothers were experienced Italian glassmakers who were recruited that year from
Today, we went on the train to Brighton. My first trip outside Central London in nearly four months. It was utterly wonderful and nearly felt like a normal weekend. Brighton’s vintage shops didn’t yield much, but I bought three inexpensive things! Pics later.
Makey-doey Sunday. I’m not really much good at doing such things with my hands. But I am quite proud of repurposing this 1970s Danish rosewood spoon shop display box into a box for my favourite pins and brooches! Now I can see them!!
Thank you so much
@British_Airways
for finally finding my bag. Battered, but intact, and complete with my clothes, washbag, medication - and my Mexican mahogany sculpture I found out there on holiday! Now I can do some research and restoration!
Sometimes, if it makes you smile, you just have to buy it.
I encountered this quirky Muranese lady at Premier Glass Fairs’ superb inaugural event last weekend and simply couldn’t resist.
There’s a lot of work in that, and the use of ‘alabastro’ or ‘opalino’ glass is unusual.
Feeling shady! Last filming day for my Antiques Roadtrip with
@IritaMarriott
😭 It’s been so much fun with highs, lows, gentle teasing and bickering - and laughs a go-go! Thank you so much Irita, I’m going to miss you so very much!! Xxxxx
Watch us early next year on BBC One!
New painting installed high up on the stairwell, viewable from the top landing. Dated (19)73, but no idea who painted it as I can’t read the signature (swipe to see it). It feels Italian or Southern French. I love the very unusual colours, the technique and the 👀. A real looker.
An unusual, early piece of pioneering glass artist Sam Herman’s studio glass just sold at auction for £2,020 including premium! My prediction that Sam’s star is rapidly rising is becoming true, prices at this level are not unusual. But I still think it has much further to rise...
The first bit of Fat Lava I’ve bought for myself in years. Not one I’ve seen in the wild before, I think it’s from Carstens’ Atelier range, in the ‘Berlin’ decor by Gerda Heuckeroth on a Heinz Siery 101 form, c1963. Rare thing. Woo!
Love love love my new pin from
@gillianhorsup
, whose shop
@alfiesantiques
never ceases to surprise, amaze, and delight. This Danish sterling silver treasure was made by Vigo Fammik of Copenhagen in the 1960s. Still snazzy and modern today, sixty years after it was made.
I love studio glass. I have a fair few wonderful pieces in my collection where little is known about who made them. So I’m putting my research hat on for a small series of blog posts about Lost Studio Glass Artists. Up first - William Warehall.
My final flea market find this weekend. Skilfully hand-enamelled, probably at Steinschonau or at Haida, c1920s. Love the blue cornflowers, white teardrops and black stylised acanthus leaf frames, and the overlapping huge orange chrysanthemum or daisy. And in such bright colours!
I couldn’t leave this Lifeguards bandsman’s tunic at Brackley Antiques Cellar today. I’ve always wanted one, but to find one that fits a skinny, elongated guy like me is nearly impossible. This fits a treat and, although it has a few faults, it had to be had for £55.
I’ve never been too sure about Jersey Pottery. Whilst I appreciate the craftsmanship, history, context and relevance, it just hasn’t ever done much for me visually.
Until I came across this piece last week.
Wow.
Abstract. Sgraffito. The selective application of glossy
Sometimes I just like something. Like this wonderfully angular African carved and ebonised wood giraffe.
I love the geometric lines and the contrasting, curving head. The carver was probably influenced by historic African tribal art and European modern art. He makes me happy.
Smiles all round! A break between lots being sold

Shit day. Shit few weeks. Ludicrousness. Uncertainty. Nothing much good.
The only answer is Victoria Wood. A deep dive tonight starting with Barry & Freda, to Shoe Shop, Two Soups, and more....
Hilarity and happiness!
Are they vases? Or are they art?
I reveal how two 1960s Czech glass vases by master glass designer Pavel Hlava were made.

Great day whizzing around Berlin’s flea markets, even though the cold depleted the number of vendors. My favourite find is this late 1950s Italian inlaid dining table with mechanical height adjuster and hidden, sliding extra side leaves - for €60 including delivery!!
#bargain
“Keep cool and be gay!” I couldn’t resist this cheapo 1950s folding fan found in a Berlin flea market this weekend due to the box. It’s by Unicorn Brand too!! And it’s CSD (gay pride) weekend, so it seemed especially apt. Now to learn the language of the fan...!
This weekend I popped along The Pantiles to my neighbour
@CHillsJewellery

Created over millennia, and admired and adored for centuries. The magical, mercurial mineral known as Blue John is never forgotten once seen.
I met artist Richard Haw, one of the few remaining carvers able to fully work and repair Blue John.

The heat is on! It’s down to the nail. It’s the final auction of my super fun Roadtrip with the divine Izzie Balmer.
And it’s even-stevens as we’ve both won two auctions so far this week!!

So sad to read about all these wonderful people who know so much about old stuff dying recently. Passion personified.
Tragically sad from every perspective, particularly for families and friends, but also a sad loss of knowledge and expertise that is rarely passed on, through
Fake Tiffany glass? Or real? With a base engraved L.C.T., the marks indicate that it’s right. But also consider the form, the iridescence, and a strange patch of wear on the base. Would you know? The answer and the full story at
I adore chilled white wine on a hot day. Nothing beats using a tool that opened thousands of bottles (& conversations!) across 200 years. Delighted to find a fabulously battered Henshall-type corkscrew from c1820
