Very disappointed to hear some @ Berlinale disparaging calls to boycott. A jury member writing she'd been "shocked" to hear of those Strik[ing] Germany, thereby not exercising their freedom of expression; a critic saying that with BDS we wouldn't see critical films by Israelis...

This is what happens when we brand our women filmmakers – "old" & new – & turn them into memes & t-shirts; when we stop engaging critically & praise any woman filmmaker who gets funding; when we flatten a rich history & repurpose it for our contemporary neolib feminist purposes

“BBC Culture polled 368 film experts from 84 countries” but didn’t think of asking anyone who writes for a lil feminist film journal based on their own lil island

"Jeanne, sitting in a blue and white gingham apron, on a golden velvet armchair, might evoke another woman, too. A woman from the fifties or sixties or seventies or eighties or nineties, or even a woman today." Chantal Akerman on "Jeanne Dielman", time and duration:

So in Lars Von Trier's film premiering at Cannes tomorrow the male characters have names and the women characters are LADY 1, 2, 3 and Simple. I was worried this year's festival was too feminist so I am relieved. #Cannes71 #cannes2018

Also, very convenient to privatise these conversations, both minimising their import and keeping them away from the main event (and its mediatisation). The fact the festival outsourced this is also very telling (as if to say, this is not the job of a film festival)

This is heinous; there’s no “both sides” in a genocide. Shame on the Berlinale.

The filmmakers able to answer this rallying cry for timely “messaging” are more like marketing people who have no interest in engaging in research or with history, including the rich and vast history of non-didactic but engaged feminist films

"Chanya Button has boasted that “[audiences] have said they forget it’s between two women.” I can’t think of a worse sin for a fictional gay relationship to commit than to be indistinguishable from a straight one" —Martha Perotto-Wills on 'Vita & Virginia'

We really need your support! We're unfunded and struggling due to extreme lack of £. Our editor/programmer has never been paid; AG's co-ed and writers are paid less than we'd like; we have so many Another Screen programmes and AG Editions books to fund 🧡

I thought to myself once again, cinema is dangerous. Perhaps now more than ever. In this binary world where it’s always either this or that. I’d so like it to be, this and that and that." —Chantal Akerman, writing in 2004. Here's to more of "this *and* that, *and* that".
