I’m just gonna post this photo of Tabu’s here so that I can pin it on my feed and keep revisiting it.

I tried reading Spivak's 'Can the Subaltern Speak?' back in BA but failed. I picked it up again during my masters thinking that I've acquired some ability to crack complex academic texts but in vain. Now as a PhD student, I can finally say that I still can't read Spivak & its ok.
It hit me today that I am nearly 28 and I don’t ‘earn’ yet. Sure there’s a PhD stipend but it’s not an actual earning - just something for humble sustenance. The perils of pursuing academia are clearer on some days. But mostly we’re deluded by free pizza and drinks in the uni. ☠️
What they’re doing in Shark Tank India, academicians have been doing since time immemorial. Just, our pitches are thrashed more, grants awarded are worth peanuts, and imposter syndrome holds 100% equity. 🥲
Rotting in bed procrastinating, avoiding email that seek update, and making chai 4x times to gather some will to write two sentences. Repeat. My dear friends, this is escapism. And that is my methodology for this paper. 🙏🏼
Maa sent pictures of the first batch of kair (कैर/केर) purchase, a drought- resilient berry from the dry lands of Rajasthan.
Marwari homes are gearing for kair achaar season and I can’t wait to be back SOON! ❤️
ANY tips for 'networking' at an academic conference? Asking for someone who's going to a conference for the first time and is an introvert with imposter syndrome :) Stop looking at me, it's not me. *gulps*
Nobody in my family understands what I do/research. All they do is laugh and say (in Marwari) – “She just fools around in temples and scribbles something in her diary. What kind of PhD is this?”
I think they are more articulate than my research thesis.🙏🏼

A victory for caste equity, social justice and human rights in Canada 🇨🇦
The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) has passed the motion to include caste as a protected category.
We thank

My father asked me to turn off the fan because it has been on since morning and now it must be tired. But why can’t he show the same concern for my mom who manages the home with a full-time job. Man, it’s exceedingly frustrating to see the labor of women kept invisible!
Some news: I have been selected for the AIIS Digital India Learning (DIL) Summer Fellowship to be carried out in the summer of 2024 from their beautiful Gurgaon office. AIIS did a feature on the four fellows this year, sharing it here -
We're raising voice against the removal of Mahasweta Devi, Bama, and Sukirtharani from Delhi University's syllabus:
This has been initiated by a group of Delhi University professors. Urging you to sign this and share!
Happy to report that academia indeed feels rewarding only after the storm has passed. 😅
But jokes aside, grateful for this opportunity, erudite company of my panelists, and unconditional support of my lovely supervisor. 🌻

This Kishangarh gurl will be talking about 18th century Kishangarh palace ladies!
Presenting a tiny bit of what I have been thinking for a few years now at AAS 24. Stocked to see my presentation amidst such fantastic lineup of projects. Come - it’s gonna be all abt women!
It’s truly humbling to have parents who absolutely do not understand what you do in academics or what your milestones mean 😭😂🙏🏼
(Translation: What is this? 😄)

Learning a new language teaches you a lot more than just the language. It prepares you to be curious, perseverant, patient but most importantly, it teaches you to be kind to yourself and to your slow progress.

Hello hello, I have a tiny exciting update to share.
I have been working with Prof. Heidi Pauwels on an in-person exhibition for the past couple of months and it is finally up in Allen Library, University of Washington for a month, starting today till the end of November. ✨
Wrapping my head around Kabir wasn’t easy and the journey is far from over. I still don’t have answers about who he REALLY was and I think that’s a good place to start with.

In other news: I’ll be joining AIIS Summer Language Program (Sanskrit) starting this June with a full-tuition scholarship (phew!).
In addition, I’ve also received funds from the Entwistle Endowment for South Asian Studies from my home dept. to support my stay in Pune. (phew-2!)
It was a long distance courtship. While on a video call and I saw a lizard getting into my closet. He stayed on call for three hours – strategizing and supporting me while I fought/shooed away the lizard. He did not ridicule my fear. And I knew he’s the one. Been three years. ♥️
The immediate thing I did on entering house after spending five days without a cup of adrak chai in Madison.

Absolutely thrilled to have been able to put this roundtable together with the best speakers I could’ve ever imagined of — Prof. Shailaja Paik, Prof. Ramnarayan Rawat, Anup Hiwrale &
@begumakhwrote
🍀
What an absolute pleasure to have listened to

talk about her book, ‘Coming Out As Dalit’; with important conversations weaved around personal anecdotes, radical politics, and humor. 💙

I explained my research broadly to my father and he said this isn’t a real padhai (study). 😓
So (sigh) how are your personal support systems in grad school doing?
So, millennials are born bw 1981-1996 and GenZs are born bw 1997-2012. I am 1996-born, so I figured out why millennials are not permitting me to hang out in their category. While GenZs are calling me a granny. 🥲 This is the new internet-'age' crisis!
I have spicy (desi spice level) spaghetti in lunch box. Yesterday when I ate them, my eyes were floating in my own tears. Am I ready to look the same way today in university cafeteria amongst 150 people? HELL YAAS!
Recently started listening to podcasts. Care to share your favorites? I’m interested in literature, arts, culture, language, stories, and Bollywood gossip. Thenx.
I don’t have the heart to talk about my upcoming academic presentation at ACSA because the world around has never been more twisted. Everything feels insignificant. But I came here to say that if you are in Madison this week and just wanna hang out, hit me up!
After a long day, when I accidentally close tabs that have significant chunk of my preliminary research and Chrome asks if I want to restore them – me:
There hasn’t been a single holiday since I started PhD that I have enjoyed to the fullest, without thinking about my work. And it doesn’t help either when ur home is also ur field; so the constant awareness of “oh this could potentially go into my dissertation” is exhausting.
Imagine the shame of being woken from your afternoon nap in the library (!!) by the fast and uninterrupted typing of a student sitting across from you. 🥲
People of Seattle, trying my luck here in a search.
I am looking for Kathak classes in Seattle. Not bollywood or semi-classical even. Any leads will be appreciated. If you’re from Seattle, mind retweeting? Plis.
What a show! When art gives you joy but also compels you to (re)think about self, society, and sarkar. My first time watching

live and it was worthwhile.

Definitely this one! My back and neck thanked me each time I worked from bed with this. It's called 'Pregnancy Pillow' but is definitely worth for people who're pregnant with the agony of living away from their partners.🥲
Anyone (preferably female-identifying) looking to book a room together in Madison, WI for the Annual South Asia Conference? My dates are Oct 20, 21, and 22. Please RT for reach. 🫶
I might not have a cat to pet but I do have a plant in my room that gives me new little leaves every other month and hey it gets all my pucchis and love. 🌿
Who says Libraries are just for reading books? Our library is centre of learning and growing together. An IAS aspirant after attending his online class can be seen teaching young students in this picture taken in common room of Bansa Library.

In Marwari (not depriving you of the feel of the language) – “पगलां की ज्याण घूमें मन्दिरां में अर काई ठीक कई लिखें हैं आपणी diary मां। याँ किशाण की PhD होवें हैं?”
I have this immense admiration and respect for final year PhD candidates who are humble when they talk about their research and don’t go around shoving their expertise in other grad students’ faces. You guys are gem.
The extent to which desi family members can body shame you is baffling! I somehow got my acne handled so now they’re focusing on whether I’ve put on a few kilos. Like whatttt (?!!). Bhai meri padhai kaisi chal rahi hai uske baare mei bhi pooch lo 🤢
