Flew into Delhi airport this morning (thankfully, to T3 not T1 - where the roof collapsed). I was told the roof collapsed on Uber/Ola drivers - who have no voice to protest since they do not have a union. 20 years ago, taxi unions would've ensured heads would roll.

In August 1934, Babasaheb defended Samaj Swasthya's RD Karve in the Bombay HC. Karve had been charged under obscenity laws for writing, amongst other things, on contraception. Women's right to choose, not their duty to procreate, was at the heart of Ambedkar's sexual politics.

Unpopular view: I am against livestreaming of court proceedings. We have poor mechanisms to control what is said in open court (including hate speech) or prevent its harmful consequences. The Solicitor General's comments in court today were distasteful at best, harmful at worst.

Reminder that access to, and information about, abortion in India depends mainly on ASHA workers. The same ASHA workers who get paid less than ₹ 10,000 a month (if they get paid on time at all). The fight for equal access to reproductive health in India is far from over.

Taking all directives by the Supreme Court on LGBTQ+ rights with a grain of salt. In the Section 377 verdict, a range of directives - including some of the same ones re-issued today around sensitisation - were proclaimed in open court but never followed or enforced.

Received distress calls from migrant labourers in Bhiwandi who say they are being charged Rs. 800 each to board a train to go back to Gorakhpur in UP. Those who can't afford a square meal are being charged a week's salary to go home. Talk about rubbing salt to an injury. Shame.

Lawyers are clear: unlike NALSA, the court cannot leave it to the legislature to grant marriage equality. Parliament's dilly-dallying can't be accepted when granting of fundamental rights are concerned. "Leaving LGBTQ+ rights to popular will is anathema to fundamental rights."

If the women's reservation bill is introduced, and passed, it must include provisions for horizontal reservations. Moreover, in line with numerous SC verdicts, the bill must explicitly recognise trans women as women and allow trans women to contest on seats reserved for women.
