St. Andrews PhD student-knows too much (not enough) about animal sex— looking at evolution of same-sex sexual behaviour in animals— PGR EDI rep for CBD
This is essentially my PhD topic so buckle up pals-
Book recs: Biological Exuberance by Bruce Bagemihl
Homosexual behaviour in animals: an evolutionary perspective by Volker Sommer and Paul Vasey
Gonna mute this this and cook Sunday dinner. If anyone has the patience or good will, please post articles and other info on biology here for those actually interested in learning about how natural and prevalent homosexuality is among animals—human and otherwise. Cheers.
I’ve had to interact with a lot of anti-trans “science” recently as a hazard of my PhD, so I want to just kindly place this article by
@JuliaSerano
on your timelines
Another
#TransDayOfVisibility
tweet because that’s the point of it all! One year ago today (left) my PhD application was officially accepted at St. Andrews and now, today!, I’m in the most accepting work environment I’ve ever experienced
One thing I haven’t seen mentioned about
@EMPSEB27
that deserves some praise is the inclusivity! It wasn’t perfect but far beyond any academic context I’ve spent time in since I started my undergrad- everybody was so nice as well and the energy of the group was great
Happy Pride Month everyone! This month, instead of tweeting about transphobes and giving them attention, tweet about trans people and the wonderful things they do!
Had 12 hours in the lab today and I keep thinking I see crickets on the bus. I close my eyes and I see crickets. The tag on my shirt feels suspiciously like a cricket.
One thing that I love about the
#LGBTQSTEMinar22
is the accessibility! Simple things like describing how you look/your background to include everybody a bit more and providing transcripts for talks- it’s a welcoming environment to be in
Sex but no baby?
@animalsexpert
from
@univofstandrews
gave us an interesting introduction to their work on same-sex sexual behaviour
Please contact Thomas if you have observations of SSB in the species you study!
Thank god for reference managers because Thomas from two years ago had three different papers about bonobos and decided to save them in his computer as “bonobos”, “bonobos_again”, and “bonobos_again_again”. Really helpful and insightful thank you Thomas
Happy disability pride month to everybody except my accommodation, who had an elevator and took it out and put up motivational posters on the stairs instead (did you know that climbing stairs burns twice as many calories as jogging? I am fuelled by the rage of a thousand suns)
The only reason I’m not going to
#ESEB2022
is to throw a rave in the building while literally everybody else is in Prague. Me n the three other people in the office are gonna party and nobody can stop us
The other thing that I want to add here is that animals certainly have sex, raise offspring, pair bond and more with members of the same sex, but the only animals capable of being “gay” or “queer” are humans
Once you start making plots in ggplot, it’s impossible to stop. Do I need this plot in both error bar and violin plot formats? Probably not. Will I continue to make more plots? Almost definitely
Happy
#TransDayOfVisibility
to my fellow trans scientists.
This year's
#TDOV
is more bittersweet as I have just returned from a conference where I was reminded of how uncomfortable being visibly trans can be, but I am still grateful for my friends and community and their support
Somewhere around 250 videos are done now! Some people ask me what I’ll do with the paper chain when I’m done and tbh my plans change day to day. Today my plan is to set it on fire. I hear crickets in my sleep.
Just watched
@rossb_oxford
talk about the history of queer zoology with
@LinneanSociety
and I’m speechless- such a good talk! Learned a whole lot and also got to see people talk about things I’ve been pondering for the last while
I’ve been selected to present at the
#TCDPrideInResearch
symposium! Thanks to
@PRIDEinResearch
for running such a great event! Looking forward to seeing what everybody has to say 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
Can’t wait for tomorrow’s LTBT+ coffee hour for queer and queer-friendly people from
@SchoolofBiology
! We’ll be in the Centre for Biological Diversity from 10-11 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
Okay okay look- it goes against every scientific bone in my body because the argument is stupid anyway but if anybody tells you “homosexuality is unnatural” just tell them it’s more commonly found in nature than face-to-face (missionary) sex
What's that? You want more queer content for
#PrideMonth
? 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈
@AnimalSexpert
is your friendly local animal sexpert. They have inhaled a greater than normal amount of cricket poo and will be our DM for our 2nd Pride Month show!

Looking forward to attending my first ever
#LGBTQSTEMinar22
today and tomorrow! I can’t wait to see what everybody’s up to and learn from fellow queer scientists
My fun little trans power move is refusing to remember which one is XX and which one is XY even though I am a biologist who specialises in sexual behaviour
I didn’t hear a single “this is more of a comment than a question” over the entire week! And when I wanted to join the dance floor we brought a bunch of chairs for people to sit in and dance without having to stand up
Started listening to
@JusttheZooofUs
yesterday to retain my sanity while watching videos of crickets at 1/4 speed and now my search history is “baby Canadian lynx” and “happy shoebill” so yeah, I’d say it helped
Doing my self-assessment for my 9 month report and there is an irresistible urge to answer the question about “support not currently provided” with an essay on university visa policy

i will always refuse to pay journals money to access science out of principal but i would absolutely donate money to scihub or another paper-distributer that values the free access to knowledge over taking advantage of researchers for profit
The first thing I do whenever I go to america is walk into the first Dunkin donuts I see and get an iced coffee- is it good? Never. Exactly how I remember it
The best part about studying sex is that I get to start all of my presentations with “let’s talk about sex, baby”
The worst part about studying sex is “let’s talk about sex” by salt-n-pepa is constantly stuck in my head
Broke: "I am living with an under-researched chronic illness"
Woke: "There are things occurring in my body that are beyond the current comprehension of mankind"
if you see the paper about SSB in mammals, do not worry. I have seen it. you do not need to send it to me. i promise approximately 7 other people have sent it to me. i am being buried in an avalanche of this paper.
These papers are mostly focussed on multiple species, but I have a whole spreadsheet of more specific papers if people are interested
Also if ppl don’t have access to any of the papers I linked to, I have PDFs to share
One of the best parts about the paper accumulation part of a meta-analysis is learning about all of the journals that exist
I just downloaded a paper from the journal “poultry science”
My favourite thing about telling people about
#FatBearWeek
is that, due to my general vibes and character, they never know if it’s about the animal or the subsection of gay man
Thank you to
@PRIDEinResearch
for hosting such an amazing event! I’m honoured to have presented my research
Such a well organised and carried out event- it must have been loads of hard work that’s well payed off
OKAY so when I was like 16 I visited my sister at Georgia Tech and attended a cancer bio class there with one of her friends- years later I’m at the
#LGBTQSTEMinar22
and I’m 90% sure the plenary speaker
@DrPlattLab
was the speaker in that class! Either that or my brain is rotting
Am I supposed to be packing for my trip? Yes
Am I, instead, taking a buzzfeed quiz to find out how many times I’ll get divorced based on my party planning abilities? Also yes (the answer is, apparently, five)
I’m not gonna lie and say I’m not real pissed that Dagmar decided she wanted to murder me and my new friends but I did like the part before she got there
