Yesterday I taught my first sections and today I held office hours.
My first student came in and said “I was so excited to see you, I’ve never seen a Latina TA/been taught by a Latina before so I had to come and introduce myself.”
What a heavy, yet inspiring feeling this is
in shock, but incredibly excited to announce that I’ve been selected to receive the NSF GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP!
First & foremost, gracias a la virgencita! After years of rejections, this validation feels so good, can’t wait to tell my parents in the morning 😆
@NSFGRFP
Officially defended my dissertation and graduated!
So much has gone into this and I wouldn’t be here without the support from my wonderful committee
@sabrinamkarim
,
@Gustavo_F_M
,
@brynrosenfeld
, and Ken Roberts (also a huge thank you to my external reader

officially a PhD Candidate! I’m indebted to my amazing partner, family, cohort, and committee for offering invaluable support as I wrote, rewrote, rewrote again, and rewrote once more this prospectus 😌
we [social science grad students] are constantly told to make sure we learn how to conduct data analysis but *never* in our training do we go over data collecting/coding, cleaning, and merging (at the correct unit of analysis)

Which is 90% of the work
now that it is official: I passed my comps 🎉
I failed the first time I took it during the summer, & I was crushed. Luckily, I have people like
@sabrinamkarim
,
@AliCirone
, and
@brynrosenfeld
in my corner that supported me throughout the process 🤩
submitted my first original research journal article with the wonderful
@crmailhot
a few months ago & today we received even more wonderful news: R&R 🤩😤🎉
Now that its official, I received a small research grant from the Women, Gender & Politics Research Section
@APSAtweets
to fund a survey experiment that will analyze justice preferences following gender-based violence in Mexico!
a BIG thank you to the selection committee! 😁
Tomorrow I move to Mexico to begin work for my dissertation & tomorrow my parents fly to Mexico to help me in anyway they possibly can
Mañana me voy a México a empezar trabajo para mi tesis y mañana mis padres llegan a México para ayudarme en lo que puedan 🥹

wrapping up my first ✨official✨week
@MSU_poli_sci
& I can confidently say:
1) My colleagues are so incredibly kind and supportive
2) Campus is beautiful
3) Yemeni coffee scene is insane and blows all other coffee outta the water
looking forward to the rest of the year 💚
I am very excited to receive the 2023
@EGEN_polisci
Prize to fund my research!
EGEN has been such a welcoming, supportive, and brilliant space for those of us studying gender and I am very grateful for the recognition ☺️
Congrats to the other awardees & honorable mentions 🎉
Love seeing everyone share their fellowship news! YOU did that!!!
And for those that didn’t get the best news—I got rejected 3 times from the Ford before I got an NSF. Each rejection is a step closer to your big win and I promise you will get your flowers 💐✨
PSA: all because I’m first-gen, a woman, Latinx, WHATEVER it is you wanna label me, please do not assume I am available to do service. I have said no too many times and now I just feel disrespected
everytime I get an academic-related rejection, my mom never fails to text me or check-in on me and it always feels like the warm embrace and reassurance I need ☺️
My hot take, because I know you’re all waiting for it, is that senior folks’ definitive hot takes are making grad students extremely anxious (esp. those on the market)
this is the perfect time for depts to offer their grad students guidance & support 👀
🚨publication alert🚨
excited that our paper (

we examine how UN reporting on SEA impacts TPCCs commitment to addressing SEA & deployment 🇺🇳
being first-gen/eldest child is tough *on top of the increasing demands of PhD candidates*
Anyways, if anyone is interested in knowing how to get licensed to become a roofing inspector in the state of FL, I’m your girl and yes, it is more complicated than getting a PhD
It’s Sunday morning, I haven’t even eaten breakfast, and I’ve already been told that I’m going to be a diversity hire.
Did I mention that I’m not even close to being on the job market?
🙄🙄🙄
I appreciate the overall point you’re trying to make, but why does the landscaper have to be Latino? Why is the black waitress also a single mom? It inadvertently furthers POC stereotypes. Repeating these stereotypes does more harm than good and undermines POC in academia

This thread is it!
I’m in my 4th year & I AM TIRED. We are expected to have a JMP, collect novel data, run surveys & experiments, answer ‘big’ questions, & win grants left and right all before even finishing our diss… during a pandemic.
can’t blame us for feeling burnt out 😵💫
What happened to supporting Black academics and other scholars of color last summer?
These kind of cowardly, hollow statements followed by inaction are exactly the reason why this discipline will never make progress.
As a grad student, this pushes me AWAY from academia
going to write down all & I mean ALL of my expenses as I begin “fieldwork”
It is irresponsible to expect grad students—especially FGLI grad students—assume that we* can afford to do this as easily as others
*And yes, I come from a uni with more resources but I’m still broke🤑
I’ll also add that grad students do so much advising and mentoring themselves (specifically for the cohorts after them) all year-round (on top of everything else we do)
🙄
My high school teachers laughed when I told them I wanted to apply to prestigious schools and told me to be “realistic” bc there was no way I’d get in - I’m a PhD student at Cornell University now and received four fellowships in the past year 🤷🏽♀️
Crying, screaming, throwing up because my little sister’s teacher wanted to brag about her perfect score on an exam (on the US constitution no less) and my sister picked ME to receive that call 🥹🫶🏽
Reese’s, the popular peanut butter and chocolate candy, announced Wednesday it is launching a university, which will accept 99.99 percent of applicants.
Graduate students bring in MILLIONS in funding to an institution that constantly neglects our well-being
Not to mention all the teaching + service work we do
Could Cornell function without us?
I don’t think so 🙅🏽♀️
Across Cornell, graduate workers teach, produce research, and do service work that enriches this university. Today, hundreds of graduate workers are coming together to build a better Cornell: we are officially kicking off our campaign to form a graduate employee union.

@OhioState
This is after she worked as a full time substitute teacher & Peace Corps volunteer 🤩
My first graduate seminar outside of political science was on gender, sexuality, & religion in sociology. Great course with Landon where he invited students to co-author an article together as the final assignment--a pedagogical practice I urge other scholars to follow!

My very first Cornell mentee. Watching you grow these last two years has been one of the best moments from my time at Cornell. Congrats again and I am so excited for your future 🥳
I’m thrilled to announce that I *miss* Ithaca. I want to thank the lakes, state parks, ice cream, and fun running routes. I also want to thank the cool evenings. I couldn’t have done it without first being in FL for three weeks and hating it whilst preparing to move to Ohio <3
Still busy, but this time at a conference celebrating inclusive diversity in the academy!
Honored to be inducted to the Bouchet Graduate Honor Society 🫶🏽
Disappointed with folks that talk a big game about solidarity but refuse to take any real action
Doubly disappointed that it feels like academia is not really moving in any real direction towards making minority students feel welcome
Lol a lot of these “20 somethings” also didn’t have the resources/opportunities to do these other things + not live at mom’s
I’ve also found that I’ve been MUCH MORE disrespected by grad students that are older + have experience bc I’m seen as just a little “20 something”
And the graduate students wondered why I was so stand-offish on visiting weekend!
I remember going back home and saying there was no way I was going to Cornell (100% here now bc of my amazing advisor)
I love how
@hebagowayed
frames rejections here: “Some of the acceptances I got in my life got me here, exactly where I want to be, but ALL of the rejections got me here.”
💖 there’s success in rejections too
Something missing from this rejection discourse: every closed door opens other possibilities you couldn’t have imagined. Some of the acceptances I got in my life got me here, exactly where I want to be, but ALL of the rejections got me here. What’s yours will be yours.
Breaking my knee/leg has been the worst, but today we got some trick-or-treaters for the first time in over 5 years and it was so nice—they even told me “i hope your ankle* heals”
*at least they were close 😭🥹
It is very rare when I meet genuine, kind, and compassionate academics! Thank you
@MaraRevkin
for speaking today at
@cornellgov
and for taking the time to meet with graduate students as well!
@IdeanSalehyan
A lot of first-gen, low-income students do this bc they don’t understand the academic socialization that is required of them. I know I did this bc I worked multiple jobs, commuted over 1.5 hours to campus, and just didn’t know what office hours were meant for
"I try to name the places I am going and the types of people I am interviewing, rather than using the shorthand of ‘the field’... They are, like everyone else, living at the centre of their own worlds."

📣We are pleased to announce the 2023-24 cohort of Peace Scholar Fellows!
Of 113 applicants from 66 U.S. universities, these 21 award recipients demonstrated the greatest potential to advance the peacebuilding field.

While I appreciate this data, not every individual that gets it is some privileged researcher
Sure, Cornell helped, but I worked HARD to get that award & I’m tired of ppl implying that I got it bc of Cornell or bc I’m brown
Why can’t it be bc I’m smart & my work is good?
We all know privilege plays a huge role in receiving an NSF GRF- to what extent was this true in 2021?
After awards were announced last week, I decided to do some digging.

Prioritize rest. Especially for my first-gen, historically excluded folks—you’ve been working so hard already—listen to your mind/body when it’s tired, I promise the work will be there in the morning not mad atcha for taking a break 😉 1/n

Not going to say our department is the best, but we’ve got a GREAT track record of receiving this award in the last few years 😎

Thank you for saying this! As a Mexican-American woman who studies gendered violence in Mexico and Central America, I am saddened at the lack of gendered analyses in a region where women are killed/missing every day and at the fact that fieldwork will just be undeniably difficult
Cis men studying violence in Mexico can improve their gendered analyses & their use of gender as angle of analysis. This isn't a subtweet; I'm talking to myself, bc, while I incorporate the environment & race, I need to think more about gendered violence in Mexico & my community.
Anyone considering applying, please reach out! I received NSF GRRP this cycle in the social sciences (political science) & want to make sure PoC applying got all the resources they need!
@POCalsoknow
Guille created a welcoming space for me to present and help teach his class and I can’t wait to replicate his model when I get this PhD!
So, a BIG thank YOU for letting me come in and speak to your amazing and thoughtful students! It was a joy ☺️
Today I had my students take a group quiz*
*They can all work together but they all must submit the same answer
**I made all the answers choice ‘A’ expect for one
***It was probably the most fun I’ve had in a classroom 😭😂
A competition where the oldest immigrant daughters of each family have to manage a trip to Disney World (min. of 8 in the family)

the confirmation of that white woman (refuse to say her name) is further proof that when states talk about women—they specifically mean white cis-women.
Not Black or Brown women. Not LGBTQIA women. Not trans-women. Not disabled women. Not indigenous women. Not immigrant women.
"widespread lack of informed consent... & there was considerable confusion about the purpose and structure of the experiments."
Such an important paper! It is vital for participants to understand their role in the research process & it is our duty to make sure of it 1/2
