Ahhhh! I can’t believe I’m saying this but I’ve written a book called TAKEAWAY. It’s a food memoir about growing up in a Chinese takeaway and each chapter is a family recipe with amazing illustrations by georgina leung. Out on 21st July! Pre order here:
I’m sorry but this whole americans discovering that british chinese food is gross and inauthentic on tiktok is so funny. There’s a lot of adaptability, innovation and perseverance in chinese takeaways that often don't get talked about and I wrote a whole damn book on it
Whatever your thoughts on takeaways or restaurants, they’ve been fundamental in shaping Britain's food culture. They were the grassroots of many Chinese families including my own who came to this country with nothing. I will fight anyone who thinks chicken balls are bad
Also support your local Chinese takeaway! Here’s Uncle Wrinkle in New Cross I went to last week run by the sweetest husband and wife duo and their fried game is on point
TW: For the past month, I've been working on this
@VICEUK
report about the rise of anti-Asian hate crime in the UK. This one cuts real deep and I put my heart and soul into this
ahhh this is taking off guess I should drop the 'ol soundcloud. if you wanna buy my book it's available now in hardback here and if you wanna pre-order in paperback (out 20th July) it's here
the us vs uk chinese takeaway discourse has been mental over the last few days so I wrote a few words on how they came to be, my family’s takeaway and my beloved curry and chips for
@thetimes
(and in today’s print too!)
I wrote about Chinese takeaways again for
@galdemzine
about my new insta project trying to document them, celebrate and tell the lives of the people who live above the shops
just been told that my book advance has been earned out wtaf!!! thank you thank you thank you for all the support from the bottom of my heart. I’m just really glad my editors didn’t edit out my stupid succulent chinese meal opening reference lmao
🚨some personal work news🚨 after four years freelance, as of today I'm back full time at
@TimeOutLondon
as a food and drink writer! I'm pumped to be reporting on the city's food scene, restaurants, communities, and all walks of life from within the food/drinks world
I'm tired of how slamming Anglo-Cantonese cuisine has become cool when talking about newer, trendier and undiscovered regional Chinese food. No need to compare or shit on the people who own and work in takeaways/restaurants that have made Chinese food in the UK what it is today
I am probably going to cry a hundred times today but holy moly I cannot believe it's my lil takeaway book's publication day! it is out today in the wild in all good book shops and online here!!!
So, today's my last day at
@HuffPostUK
. Solidarity to my fellow brilliant colleagues who are also leaving due to the buzzfeed cuts. It's been a wild year joining a new team during a pandemic (who most of them I haven’t met irl?!) and reporting on covid day in day out
Now that I've calmed down a bit from all the coleen and rugby drama. I wrote about my family's old Chinese takeaway, spoke to other restaurant owners and the future of takeaways in this strangely emotional piece for
@VICEUK
I presented a lil
@BBCRadioWales
programme about chinese takeaways, post takeaway life and the future of takeaways. I interview my mum, old staff and the takeaway owner where she currently works at now. It’s out tonight at 6:30pm! Listen here:
Hi! Some actual personal news that's not a pisstake for once. I've got a new regular freelance gig at
@HuffPostUK

The paperback of TAKEAWAY is out tomorrow, with a slight makeover. I never expected this book to take off the way it did, and I am still crushed by gratitude to everyone who read it, supported it and connected to it in any way! A million thank yous!
You know what fuck it. It feels oddly emotional to display my Chinese name in public. I used to hate my Chinese name because kids would make fun of me having two names
Was just asked to put the other name my parents gave me in my profile- and don't know why I didn't think to before! Feel free to join me.

I wrote about my home Hong Kong for
@VICEUK
's homecoming series. Talking about food, race, identity and what life was like living on this tiny packed island. Oh and egg waffles, lots and lots of them
been at Gordon Ramsay’s new ~Asian~ restaurant pop up for five minutes and I already want to bang my head against the wall I’ve just been served a mini wagyu beef burger with ‘asian’ spiced chilli jam wow
Don’t you just love to see it when a man sits in the empty seat next to you on the tube and immediately gets back up muttering “errr, not sitting next to coronavirus”
Ffs I just want to live my life in peace. A man was following me around in the supermarket looking at me weird and came right up to my face shouting “chinky chinky” and walked off laughing
just give
@vittleslondon
the orwell prize for exposing britain's social evils 2022 already for outing restaurants overcharging smacked cucumbers in today's worst value newsletter
Last year, the tories released a cookbook so I did what any brave/dumb food writer would do and hosted a three-course Tory dinner party cooking recipes from the cursed book for
@VICEUK
. Spoiler: I didn’t die from food poisoning and lived to tell the tale!!
Hi folks! I’ve just been made redundant mid-pandemic 🙃 please hmu for any work. I’m good at writing shit hot copy, content marketing, advertising, sosh and pissing high profile chefs off lol. See more work ‘ere:
Say whaaat! An honour to be shortlisted for not one, but for two awards when I've never been shortlisted for anything in my life before. Thank you
@UKWritingAwards
and thank you judges for this lush surprise!
I'm super proud of my
@TimeOutLondon
cover story with
@RGIZZA
. It's an ode to the city's corner shops and newsagents. Pick one up today or online here!
When he said "If you stay here much longer, you will go home with slitty eyes" to a group of British students when he was in China. Great mems. 🏴🕊🤍
I wrote about that certain chef who presented 'Asian' food as a 'dirty' monolith that needed to be refined and how it's spurred on a wonderful celebration of East and South East Asian food
One whole year of my first-born baby TAKEAWAY. No words to describe how much this book means to me and how insanely grateful I feel for every blessing it has brought into my life. Floppy version is out today!!!
@TrapezeBooks

Last night was the launch of the Taking Care of Business exhibition at
@MigrationUK

I wrote about how coronavirus is still affecting Chinatown restaurants for
@eaterlondon
. Many of them are on the verge of going under or temporarily closing
also my lil takeaway is
@BBCRadio4
's book of the week!!!! the incredible fellow welsh asian comedian
@iampriyahall
will be reading bits from the book every day from the first week of august
I'm writing a piece about the racialisation of epidemics. Have you witnessed or experienced racism in the wake of coronavirus? My DMs are open. RTs welcome!
a sad, sad day for journalism and what an immeasurable loss. gal-dem did such important work creating a vital platform for sharing marginalised voices and took chances on young writers of colour like me. I owe a lot to the editors and contributors I worked with there💔
We are incredibly sad to announce that gal-dem is closing.
Several factors that have contributed to this difficult decision, including numerous challenges with running a small, mission-driven, independent media company. We’ve shared more here
This is something I've wanted to write about for years (but couldn't because they're v anti-press), one of the last interviews I did pre-lockdown and I'm so glad I can finally share Lo's noodle factory's story for
@eaterlondon
wtf is this casually racist sweeping generalisation of Chinatown? Way to kick businesses down while the area's fighting for survival and on its arse already with high rents and business rates
Got catcalled on my way home and a group of guys started nihaoing and xiexieing me for my ass as I walked away. I’m sorry but men do you expect me to jump on your dick because you said one or two words of Chinese really badly???
My debut for
@galdemzine
about how epidemics became a breeding ground for racism. Thank you everyone that shared your stories with me – it’s crazy how many have been discriminated because of coronavirus. ty
@CharlieBCuff
@kemioliviax
for commission!
@VickyChandler
I just came back from one! We travelled for almost three hours (one way) across the country in the middle of nowhere to see a jam factory that's not open to the public (so I can't even write about it) when in fact it was just an empty room with a jam machine lol
Since last week, over 3,000(!) restaurants have pivoted to delivery and takeaway options to stay afloat during the covid-19 pandemic. I've mapped London's best restaurants that have adapted by area for
@eaterlondon
. First up the North
I’m in Brussels and they have a champagne, lasagne, steak and chips vending machine. Talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, showstopping, spectacular, never the same
