The unsealed charges against Durov are insane. If sustained, I don't see how tech founders could possibly travel to France, much less hire in France. This is economic suicide and is rapidly and permanently changing the perception of founders and investors.
12 charges against Telegram CEO Pavel Durov include "providing cryptology services aiming to ensure confidentiality without certified declaration" and six counts of "complicity" with alleged criminal activity by Telegram users

A bit of
@ProtonPrivacy
history. This was the first Proton server in 2014, a Dell R420 running CentOS which ran all of production for the first 4 months. Additional servers would not arrive until the end of the initial

crowdfunding campaign. Retired only in 2022.
Recently
@ProtonMail
won a court victory for privacy in Switzerland. This new ruling means that many Swiss companies are now exempted from handing over certain data in response to Swiss legal orders. We're fighting for you, and our work continues.
For the next 2 weeks, we are donating 10% of revenue from new

subscriptions to relief efforts in
#Ukraine
. Freedom and privacy are human rights so basic Proton services are always free, but you can subscribe to support our mission and users in Ukraine.
It also damages France's reputation for freedom. In 2011 Durov gave the middle finger to Putin (literally), but it was France that arrested him. Imagine the outrage if Zuck visited Russia and got arrested. These charges could apply to any social media company.
Hey

@MicrosoftEdge
You are currently blocking on accident the website of
@ProtonMail
, the world's largest encrypted email provider with over 70 million users. Can we get a fix for this ASAP?
The extrajudicial nature of the charges is also troubling. France is saying that a service operating on servers in a foreign jurisdiction and based overseas, can now be subject to its jurisdiction. The only FR connection is that Durov made the mistake of obtaining FR nationality.
Today, Google can preinstall apps on Android devices and set as defaults their own services, which millions of people won’t bother changing. This is wrong and anti-competitive. Users should have the choice to select their own defaults while setting up their phones.
This is far worse than the headline implies. If this behavior is allowed to stand, it means that Google essentially gets to pick the winners and losers in a market. Because of this deal, no other music app can be price competitive in the Play store. Fees must be lowered for all.
This is why Apple's anti-competitive app store policies that enforce a de-facto monopoly on app distribution is so problematic. When Apple puts business interests ahead of freedom (always), entire countries get cut off from the open internet.
We are aware of problems in
#Brazil
w/ downloading
#ProtonVPN
from the iOS App Store (also impacting other VPNs). The problem is not on our end, but is an app store issue. Could be a bug, or
#Apple
implementing a secret censorship order.
Workaround and details here:
Some thoughts on the French "climate activist" incident. It's deplorable that legal tools for serious crimes are being used in this way. But by law,
@ProtonMail
must comply with Swiss criminal investigations. This is obviously not done by default, but only if legally forced.
A lot of incorrect information out there regarding
@ProtonMail

1) ProtonMail does not give data to US authorities. That's illegal under article 271 of the Swiss Criminal Code

According to sources, this is how Uber got hacked. A lot went wrong there that should have been preventable, but ultimately, hacks are inevitable.
@ProtonMail
's security model is to simply have as little user data as possible, ensured by zero access encryption.
Updating the Proton icons was honestly harder than writing code or doing physics. So it is great to see so many positive reactions from
@ProtonMail
users around the world. I like them too, but your reaction matters more. We can also have some nostalgia for the past. (1/3)
"Apple will enable all the suspect photos to be decrypted and, if apparently illegal, passed on to the relevant authorities." --> Imagine what this could do in the hands of an authoritarian govt? Don't have to imagine too hard either given Apple's cozy relationship with China.
People have often asked me why
@ProtonPrivacy
started with email. It's because the first step towards freedom isn't just securing your communications, it's taking back your identity. Email is identity, and that's worth protecting.
Recently,

Some folks are upset about the

Protecting the privacy of all users is important to us - we're also activists at heart. To those that say we don't fight for users, it simply is not true. In 2020 alone, we fought over 700 cases.
There's currently a proposal in the EU to break end-to-end encryption and force companies to scan all content for CSAM and report users or face legal consequences. This is why such proposals must never be allowed to pass:

That being said, due to Apple and Google's abusive app store fees, prices on iOS and Android are 30% higher. This is Big Tech's tax on the internet that's contributing to increased inflation. If we crack down on Big Tech abuses, literally everybody pays lower prices.
Most people probably thought Trump would crawl away at the first sign of danger. The contrast with Biden who can hardly walk off stage when not being shot at couldn't be stronger. This could be the moment that decides the election (if Dems don't change candidates).

The biggest scam in tech is the fact that Google lets anyone bid on trademarked keywords, essentially forcing all small businesses to pay (thousands/month) bidding on their own name (which would otherwise rank first if not for ads), or suffer from unscrupulous competitors.
@ProtonMail
2) ProtonMail only complies with legally binding orders from Swiss authorities. This means that the legal standard is that Swiss law is broken (not US law or any other law)
3) In the case with Fauci, the Swiss government opted to assist US authorities in their investigation as Swiss law was also broken (sending death threats is highly illegal)

It was a pleasure to discuss last week with Vice-President

Proton continues to evolve and grow, as will our icons over time (we'll try to do the next refresh in less than 8 years). Proton's first logo will always be special because it was the first. It's gone now, but not forgotten, so maybe we'll see it again someday, somewhere. (3/3)

There's a BIG difference between willingly abusing user data to serve ads, versus obeying legally binding court orders after all appeals have been exhausted. Also, Proton actually won in court soon after this case:

The foundation is actually funded by the for-profit corporation, which is itself owned by the foundation. This is intentionally circular - the foundation protects the company, and the company's profits (from customers) ensures the foundation's independence. It's self reinforcing.

The Digital Markets Act is a bold reform that can reinvigorate the tech sector. But if it doesn't ban pre-installation of default apps, it may fail at its job: to level the field and restore healthy competition. And there may not be another chance to get it right.

The nomination of Jonathan Kanter to be the top U.S. Justice Department antitrust official shows Biden is serious about challenging Big Tech. Whether this will lead to real change however, is still to be seen.
@GalenChris
That's not how it works. Proton Pass utilizes end-to-end encryption, so not even Proton can decrypt it, and there have been hundreds of court cases that have proven that Proton's encryption cannot be bypassed by court orders.
Following the recent sale of Threema to private equity, another privacy company has been sold, this time to a government controlled company.

will not go down this path however, as staying independent is the only way to always put users first.

As a result, everybody bids on everybody, user experience suffers (as the ad of a competitor is not likely the user's search intent), and Google profits at everyone's expense.

Not an April Fools joke: Tech giants are so afraid of antitrust regulations that they are funding fake "small business" organizations to conduct astroturfing in an attempt to influence lawmakers.
@atRachelGilmore
Email is literally digital mail. If Canada Post were to a tackle this, they would start by opening and reading every letter that is sent (so what was done in East Germany). This can of course be done, but should it be done? Probably not as it would be the end of democracy.
A great victory for Epic (and hopefully smaller devs as well), and major props to
@TimSweeneyEpic
for having the guts to do it. Unfortunately, it is not quite equal justice for all if it requires a billion dollar company to fight a trillion dollar company.
This is an example of the greatness of the American justice system. A billion dollar company challenges a trillion dollar company over complex antitrust practices, and a jury of 9 citizens hears the testimony and renders a verdict. And here it is in writing!
