It certainly is interesting to see a legislative committee decide that COVID rules should stay in place at the legislature. Masks, no public entry, physical distancing all to continue. The optics of this, versus almost everywhere else (particularly schools), are pretty bad.

This just happened in the legislature during the premier's scrum with reporters. Higgs said he hadn't seen the whole sex ed presentation - just the one screenshot. Asked if he based his decision to ban HPV Action on one screenshot, Higgs responded: "Next question."

I’m at the DECH ER with a family member. Just wanted to shout out the staff - fantastic treatment. In all back-and-forth about the problems in the system, this is a really good reminder to me that the people doing the actual work are rock stars.

Yesterday, I asked the province whether the COVID subvariant XBB.1.16, nicknamed 'Arcturus,' has been detected in New Brunswick. They won't tell me, and say the information will be only be shared if they decide it's "in the public interest."

I just received the student absenteeism data for March. It's pretty bad. On a year-over-year basis, absences are up in every school district. In some cases, it's doubled. Staff absenteeism data is also trickling in from the districts. It's eye-catching too. Story to come.

Well, Public Health had an apparent change of heart. "To date, two cases of XBB.1.16 have been confirmed in New Brunswick. Public Health was notified of the first case on April 20 and the second on April 27," Department of Health spokesperson Sean Hatchard said in an email.

So it turns out the $12M that the province committed to the Sussex flood mitigation project is 100% dependent on the PCs being re-elected. It wasn't budgeted for 2024-2025. The summer tour of campaign promises disguised as government announcements is officially underway.

The more I look into it, the less convinced I am that the French immersion changes are about immersion's successes or failures. Based on government's comments, the changes seem to be more about using the immersion resources to help fix the broken English Prime stream.

Just something I found interesting yesterday. I went to pick up some rapid tests in Fredericton. You couldn't get within range of the site unless everyone in the car was masked. And even though it's basically a drive-thru, everyone inside was also masked. Quite a contrast.

It’s widely known in political circles that Conservative strategist Jenni Byrne - arguably the heaviest hitter in the country (advised Harper, is advising Poilievre) - was in N.B. earlier this week, and met with the premier. I asked for comment about her visit, but no response.
